What metals can I melt in my new furnace?

  • I know that my new furnace can melt aluminum quite fast, but what I also wanted to know is can I melt brass and copper. So I made 3 small steel crucibles and tried to melt copper brass and aluminum for comparison. From a cold start the aluminum melted in 14 minutes shortly followed by the brass. Copper melted in half an hour. The ingot mold is made from sand that’s mixed with sodium silicate and hardened with CO2 gas. The resulting ingots weighed aluminum 194g, brass 629g and copper 598g.

    Fascinating.
    So copper took longer to melt than brass.

    MP Dragon. awesome video, be careful though when casting and melting brass, the fumes are toxic and when even the smallest drop of water will hit it, you will have to deal with a hail storm of molten brass. Molten brass itself will burn you to the bone. I work at a metal casting factory/foundry and I have seen some really violent accidents. I want you to be save. Stay awesome.

      Cloudburn yes the way you put it less dense metals would be safer, but also dangerous. Aluminium can explode as well though. Just be careful with water or anything that water can condensate onto. Never do it under anything that can catch steam and drip down into your crucible or casting mold. Always make sure you have at least welding gloves, since they extend over your forearms, have eye protection, preferable goggles, a welders apron and/or jacket and some respiratory protection that way you will be as save as you possible can be in a home environment. There are plenty of good tutorials on youtube about casting, and when you cast try to use an oil based casting shape, like mp used in this video, that way you have the least chance of things exploding in your face.
      Brass has a relatively high melting point which makes it prone to react faster when it is forced to be cooled down, e.g. a drop of water or residue of water or anything colder then the temp. of itself when in a molten state. This has to do with the chemical make-up of brass, as it contains sulfur, which in turn acts like a catalyst making it explode. I mean seriously, don't be the first person to post it to youtube, because I am about a 100% serious you will not survive it or at the very least be seriously injured. Brass explodes into a hailstorm of of the smallest particles of brass, which will burn literally to the bone, I've witnessed an accident where it burned a colleague, through his thermal suit, through his under-padding, through his under garments all the way through his arm. He had an array of holes in his arm I'm telling you he was lucky. Just be save and use common sense. Be save.

      Good advice. I've only melted a handful of times but recently learned if it looks like rain, don't melt. I had no choice but to run away. Not easy for me. The rain even cooled the bricks on my temp furnace so fast most all of them broke. Aluminum blops everywhere. Sounded like silenced machine gun fire at one point. Glad I moved my truck. Never again.

      I think it has something to do with fire and the fact that a solid becomes liquid. Of course we have to be careful an not touch it just because its solid it could still be hot enough to hurt us.

    • @jagboy69
      @jagboy69 7 лет назад

      Look up the Kwiky burner. It's a simple venturi burner designed to run waste motor oil with common off the shelf plumbing parts.. A blower is a must and so is an air compressor. I've been running one for years, it has a slight learning curve, but once setup, costs literally nothing to run.

    • @mpdragon6295
      @mpdragon6295  7 лет назад

      I know that design, but I want to try an even simpler design

    • @MichaelScottPerkins
      @MichaelScottPerkins 7 лет назад

      When you say, "run waste motor oil..." it is really possible to burn old motor oil as the fuel source for a foundry furnace? And it is possible without clouds and clouds of acrid smoke?

    • @jagboy69
      @jagboy69 7 лет назад

      Absolutely! I start mine with diesel, after about 10mins, it's up to temp and I back off the diesel and switch to used motor oil. With enough forced air, it burns without any visible smoke. I use motor oil from the cars, but you could use filtered waste veggie oil too. Your place might smell like french fries too! My furnace is an old air compressor tank, lined with kaowool and then a 1inch thick layer of mizzou refractory cement. That stuff tolerates up to 3100degrees. Don't go cheap on your furnace, you want it to last. It's not rocket science thats for sure. Go visit www.alloyavenue.com and look around. Lot's of good help there from the guys. ;-) Stop in and say hi!

    you can gold gold bricks also just not easily, though you can go to dumpsters for old computers, things like phones, tablets, you would have to basically unscrew them for their motherboards and the chips, the drivers, and you'd find out just how to retrieve the gold from them, you could as well go look for video game consoles, games, and get the gold taken off those things motherboards also, just note this though: if you wanted an entire new gold brick from scraps of gold from what I listed, you'd have probably a few months of collecting this stuff from dumpsters, though you would be very amazed to know just how much money you could potentially own from an entire gold brick, I think you'd be holding in your care a few millions of dollars worth if its gold bricks.
