  • Alberta’s government is proud to support Indigenous community-owned businesses like Akamihk Fresh with the Aboriginal Business Investment Fund. That’s why we’ve doubled this effective grant program over the past two years, from $5 million in Budget 2022 to $10 million in annual support in Budget 2024.
Akamihk Fresh received a $500,000 ABIF grant in 2021-22 and has been operating since 2022. Akamihk’s lettuce and freeze-dried herbs are sold in markets across Alberta, and it is also supplying schools in Maskwacis with nutritious food for students. The hydroponic greenhouse uses 90 per cent less water than conventional farming methods and no pesticides.
In 10 years, ABIF has supported more than 85 Indigenous businesses and helped create more than 800 jobs for Indigenous people in Alberta. It is a key part of Alberta’s commitment to economic reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
