He was a lot of fun to watch. I normally hate it when umps make it about themselves, but Jerry was entertaining. He gave it as much as the managers did.
@@deanladue3151 Crawford was always an antagonistic umpire. He enjoyed his little bit of limelight. He wasn't a bad umpire actually but he got himself involved in heated arguments even with managers who weren't that confrontational. He definitely enjoyed busting balls.
Jerry Crawford was on the Close Call Sports podcast some time ago. He said that Piniella had been arguing with the umpiring crew about various things for the entire game and he felt the umpires had to show Piniella that they were in charge of the game not him. There had been a beanball war in the past between the two teams and Doug Harvey issued pregame instructions that warnings and ejections would be issued if trouble arose. Crawford apparently felt that Dennis Martinez's pitch was probably a breaking pitch that got away from him and thus gave him the benefit of the doubt that the HBP was unintentional--so no warnings were needed. Crawford said that he was later at a banquet or some sort of event with Piniella and that they showed this video. Piniella and he laughed about it but he said it was a good thing that Doug Harvey got between them.
@@kennethcurtis1856 He and Piniella were going chest to chest, just as Crawford went chest to chest with Jimy Williams in an incident in 2000. Williams said afterward that he thought Crawford was trying to bait him into bumping him. I'm surprised nobody got suspended after the Piniella incident. Crawford said Bill White, the president of the National League, chastised him after the Piniella incident. He said Doug Harvey was critical of his (Crawford's) temper.
Jerry Crawford was ranked the best National League umpire in a 1999 poll of players and managers. He had good umpiring skills but had his father Shag's and brother Joey's feistiness.
If I remember correctly, this was on a July Wednesday in 1990. I had this game on VHS for the longest time. I remember loving this announce team. Mike Lupica, along with Norm Hitzges and the play by play of Gary Thorne. And this ended up being a great game.
I got to talk to Lou for a bit before a game when he managed the D-Rays in 2004. He came over to the stands to say hi to everyone. Like most great competitors, was a monster between the stripes but the nicest guy in the world off the field.
I agree he didn't take much but he was very combative and antagonistic. He actually was a solid umpire but he did have an issue with being second guessed and didn't show much restraint. Good theater.
@@davidscanlon1244, Yes and papa was Shag Crawford. My brother was a minor league ump back in 80s. I used to visit him during spring training in FL. Got to meet many MLB umps. They were all pretty much gentlemen and class acts.
Loved Sweet Lou!!!! I remember I was at a Mariners home game in the 90’s at Safeco , when Lou was running out of the dugout to argue a call at 1st base, and tripped on the last step and just flat out face planted into the ground. What does he do? Gets right back up and runs to the umpire and bumps him, gets thrown out. Lou finally leaves 5 minutes later after he kicks his own hat around the field for a while!! Lou was one of a kind!!!
Jerry Crawford was one of the most confrontational umpires ever. There's another video showing him going at it with then Cubs manager Don Zimmer. Entertaining but unnecessary.
Lou Piniella was a freaking firey manager. He led the wire to wire. That team has no quit in them. Let's not forget that this was the same team and season when pitcher Norm Charleton ran over Dodgers catcher Mike Socia and Lou Piniella would pick up first base and throw it into right field TWICE in a game against the Dodgers.
Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Tim Raines, Randy Johnson, Larry Walker, Pedro Martinez, Vladimir Guerrero all are HOFers and all came up through the Expos system plus a slew of other great players such as Tim Wallach and Andres Galarraga and no World Series appearances and I believe only one playoff appearance.
Give 'em hell, Lou! :D I remember his fits from his days managing with us in Seattle. I think the time he threw a base the camera cut to Junior laughing his ass off at the absurdity of it all.
Piniella gave Pete some of the credit when they won the series…. I remember it quite vividly… Rose was a pretty good manager… if he woulda focused completely on that instead of the gambling thing, maybe he’d a been there in 1990….
As a teenager I thought it was possible to be so upset at a baseball call that one could/should argue in this way. Now I'm in my 50s, I consider this mental; this is just baseball. Now, red-light cameras, or traffic fines, that's different. I wish we could be allowed to argue like that in court against a policeman, pay your fine, and then leave.
Notice that Piniella didn't argue with Harvey; he just kind of pled his case. No one argued with Harvey. He was nicknamed "God" because he had earned so much respect. Crawford, however, was fair game.
@@alanhess9306 This was the second batter Martinez had hit in the game, without being ejected; there had been some history between these two teams, and both teams had been warned about beanballs before the game started. 😅😅😵💫
Does anybody else wish that Lou Pinella was micd up for the entirety of his carrer haha
I would give a week's pay to hear a recording of that conversation lol
He would educate the population to a whole new level of foul language. Probably best we never know.
If they did that, the bleep machine would probably explode!
Would have been like listening to Morse code.
Not if children were listening lol
Lou Piniella, the Bobby Knight of baseball. Great manager, even greater temper
Except Piniella is a decent human being...
Sweet Lou! That 1990 season was grand! What a team!
Jose Rijo, Tom Browning, and the NASTY BOYS!!
There really isn’t many men left like Lou. True warrior
We need Jomboy to break this down with a proper lip reading. LET'S GO!!
Omg. Was thinking the same thing.
I loved Crawford. That man never backed down. His argument with Don Zimmer when he was coach of the Cubs was epic!
I love watching Zimmer and Crawford going nose to nose
He was a lot of fun to watch. I normally hate it when umps make it about themselves, but Jerry was entertaining. He gave it as much as the managers did.
Crawford was as bad as West….all about themselves. Nobody pays to see the umpires…..
Lou Piniella: Unstoppable force
Jerry Crawford: Immovable object
Perfect analogy!
Facts
Lol yup
Lou Piniella is known for his trademark temper tantrums.
I miss these days! Lou was something else and he got the Reds. World Series.
Lou and Crawford argument is priceless. I miss these kinds of arguments. Lou was no punk. Jerry Crawford was always good for an argument. Classic!!!!
Check out the game where Crawford went at it with Don Zimmer. 👍👍

Jerry Crawford never backed away from a good fight. Gotta give him credit, Lou was an imposing guy
Yeah, just came here from the Zimmer-Crawford vid, but to be fair, Crawford blew both calls. John Cusack will play him in the movie.
Damn Jerry Crawford could give it as good as he got it lol
“I wouldn’t turn my back on Pinella”😆😆😆
Always nice to see a true master the craft at work.
The same umpire Jerry Crawford who blew a fuse against don zimmer when he managed the Cubs. Miss those ejections
Doug Harvey was one of the greatest umpires of all time and had everybody's respect.
Jerry Crawford had a vicious rhubarb with Don Zimmer in Cincinnati too
Tom Conn that argument was bad ass
@@robosdrumworld that’s a great video too, wish you could hear what both Zimmer and Lou were saying.
From what I could see of the Zimmer one the guy operating the beeper would be very busy.
Give props to the crew chief too. He knew Lou was upset so he let him have his say then calmly escorted Lou towards the dugout.
Doug Harvey great umpire.
