Hi Paul, I am enjoying watching your videos for I am a first-time DIY. I have taken the 3 layer of wallpaper and paint on top of wallpaper off and now at the stage of sanding my walls back. I was told by a paint specialist that my walls are one of the worst he's come across. However the work has to be done so watching your videos is encouraging me that it can be done. So thank you for your videos

Paul, thank you so much! I just removed 4 layers of wall paper from our hallway, below the chair rail. I'm a pretty handy lady but this would be my first time tackling a wall repair. This video really boosts my confidence. I was gonna order from HD but will be happy to support your store instead.

Hi Paul, I’m a DIYer from Puerto Rico, your video is great, thanks for this tutorial. I just removed a wallpaper with 2-3 coats of paint on it, but thankfully the wall doesn’t look as bad as the one in this vid. Tomorrow I’ll go buy Gardz since I had no idea that was the next step and that’s how I found you, after googling what should I do next. Question: how do I smooth the compund to a yogurt consistency if I bought the one that’s already mixed? I just found out our Home Depot doesn’t sell Gardz, can you suggest another equivalent product?

Thank you Paul Peck! I took out the wallpaper and several coats of paint on top of the wallpaper that had been in our guest bedroom since we moved there 25 yrs ago. By the time I got done my walls were a disaster. Since watching your video and you answering my question I was able to finish the guest bedroom and make it look fabulous. My husband was amazed! Thanks for saving me lots of money, I thought I was going to have to hire someone to fix my mess. I'm a 62 yr old female and I feel great being able to accomplish this big project! Couldn't have done it without following your video!

Hi Paul, DIYer here, remodeling my 1913 bungalow kitchen. Had a contractor raise the ceiling 2' in half of the area to match the other half, and I'm doing everything from the mudding and taping on out. I have new drywall butted against old drywall, plywood walls, and mdf - and NOTHING lines up nicely! Also, there were damaged areas where I removed tile. Gardz worked great there! About to skim coat, and your videos are giving me some much-needed encouragement!

Avid diyer here, and have always avoided major drywall repairs other than quick patches. Recently purchased a 1962 home that had multiple layers of wallpaper. After removing everything I found wall patches from previous renovations and none of the texture matched. After repairing anchor holes, screw holes and other damage, the walls looked like Swiss cheese - and I was about to call a Drywaller to skim coat the whole thing when I found your videos. I decided to try it myself - it’s not like I could make them any worse! 1 12” knife and pan and 6” taping knife, a couple of buckets all purpose joint compound and a 3/4” masonry roller (all in about $75) and a couple of afternoons of my time - my walls look absolutely gorgeous. Perfectly smooth (even with an eggshell paint!) they look better than any repair I’ve paid for in the past! Thanks for the great videos!!

I’m sure a professional would probably find mistakes but I’m proud of what I did and like I said it looks great to me.

Hey Paul, Thanks so much for these videos. I am an independent remodeling contractor and have been for about thirty years. I've done lots of full on turnkey remodeling projects and do 90% of the work myself but always avoided major drywall repair jobs and wallpaper nightmare repairs because... well I'm kind of slow and until recently not real proficient at drywall finishing. But, 4 months ago I started watching your videos and immediately began improving. I am currently on a project in which the client has requested that the popcorn ceiling be removed. Wall paper was originally put directly on the drywall with no primer. Even with my best efforts it tore the drywall paper up. I tried skimming over bare brown paper last year and it was a disaster, it does bubble like crazy. Took me 4 layers of drying and sanding over a few days to finally get it under control. Then I saw one of your earlier videos about using Gardz. anyone who says the paper won't bubble is lying.

You can use mud like this on some paper and it soaks up the moisture and pull right off when before it was impossible to pull off… or skim like this then spray knock down

Fortunately the walls are in mostly excellent shape, since they had been painted with semigloss paint prior to the wallpaper. I can't tell you how thankful I am for this video. The previous owners of this home not only did a terrible job with the addition to the house but they did a terrible job with the drywall, placing the wallpaper, removal of wallpaper, and then another bad wallpaper job on top of that. It's a nightmare. Just purchased the guardz primer, sanded down some areas, and removed excess wallpaper. I am a DIYer but know more about plumbing (daughter of a plumber) so this is all somewhat new to me. I have had enough experience to know that the job the previous owners did was a "diy don't"! LOL! Thanks to you I know how to overcome this little hiccup and I hope it works so I don't have to replace the drywall.

Great tutorials. Thank you! I’m a DIYer who recently renovated a small house from start to finish. A lot of what I had to do was new to me including plastering. Some of the locals watched the whole process from start to finish and one of them recently asked me to renovate a small room for her. I can live with a few imperfections in my own home but doing the work for someone else takes it up a notch. Your wallpaper nightmare vid was a huge help as it pretty much matched what I was dealing with. Skim coating the wall is next so I’ll be going through more of your vids. Great video. I just started a Powder Room remodel which had wallpaper installed 35 years ago. I used a steamer with good success in removing the wallpaper but I also experienced some top layer of drywall tearing. I’ve cleaned up the loose paper. Then started to fill in the divots with White Spackle and then bought Kiltz to seal the speckled areas. I’ve made good progress. But I am glad that I found your video and I will now skim coat the walls. I am sure this will give me a better end result and reduce the amount of sanding I was expecting to do. Thanks

dIYer here started flipping homes helping a friend do things I knew what to do , meanwhile contractors would come do works and I would ask if I could learn by watching most said yes and now I work for a realtor who buys and rents homes and I’m always busy , dry wall repairs was one I was always late for as I had a full time 8 hour job then so by the time I I helped do my part that was most of the time finished or they were just sanding walls down :(
So now thanks to you I know what products to use and how it’s done from start to finish.
Thank you so much for sharing this!! Wall looks like new by the way!

Your tip about lighting is so true.
I am remodeling a house that had that Mediterranean texture. I had to get rid of all of that, and flatten out the walls. Then more sanding. I found that lighting the work area with a light focused on my area, worked really well. If I didn't move the light with me as I went, I would end up too far from it, and it showed later. Live and learn.
You have had 20 yrs to get your walls looking like that, and they are great. I have never done it, or corners. I learned how to make it end up looking like yours, but the effort I put in was way more than yours.
Thanks for the tips and video.

I am 100% new at this. I figured out on my own how to use my clothes steamer to remove the wallpaper from the walls of my small bathroom. I found you to show me what to do next before painting. My walls are a mess but now I know how to get them smooth. Thanks!!

Just finished removing 30+ year old Mylar faced wallpaper that was applied over raw, unprimed sheetrock. I was left with a couple walls that didn’t look much better than your homeowner’s. Never heard of Gardz and had trouble locating it but I am going to give it a try. The best part is the wall is 25’ tall. Thanks for the advice.

Thank you, your video on how to prepare drywall after wallpaper removal was great, plus using a roller to help with skim coating. I am currently remodeling a lobby for a fire district, walls were never primed before wallpapering, what a mess ahead of me, but your videos are very informative, will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for the video. I had to remove three layers of wallpaper from the kitchen and steam is your friend, but still leaves the paper in a soggy state with old glue. You are a skim coat master. Good job.

Working on a kitchen that was probably 40 years old. Must have had a couple of coats of wallpaper on it before I came. And after each coat of wallpaper there was a very good reason to wallpaper again because it was a mess each time. A very rough wall. I hope to enjoy your skim coating lessons.

Hi, here in NZ, i've used an enamel based sealer over the raggedy old paper which was sanded with 6o grit to scuff up the cardboard fibres, Then rolled with a medium to long pile roller using pigmented enamel sealer, Alkyd Flat enamel typically an enamel based ceiling sealer. Scuff with 60 grit before painting then Light sand with 100 grit to knock the tips down and any high spots, then skim same as you've done. The sealer locks the remnants of wall paper to the wall and stops it getting wet from the plaster coat and releasing if the glue gets wet, Like wet plaster can bulge off the wall creating a blister. And It also prevents the brown stains bleeding through the plaster from the brown cardboard. Stains could potentially bleed through the acrylic top coats in the near future if it isn't sealed. Your way is awesome too ! You've got that down to a fine art , Nice Job !

Thank you so much. We owned rentals for 23 years and did all our own repairs. We might flip a home if they sell it to us and their is wall paper in just about every room. I’m figuring the budget and time. My brothers are construction workers and I can summon their assistance if needed. Your video was extremely helpful.

Hey! We are DIY-ers in an old house where everything seems like it was done badly /lazily by previous owners! Pulled the wall paper off and so much plaster paper came with it. Really helpful to watch videos about fixing DIY disasters, rather than videos about how to do things when the previous step went perfectly! This video was very clear, helpful, and easy to understand. Looking forward to fixing our wall! Thank you!

DIY here. Just ripped out some 1970's vinyl wallpaper out of one of our bathrooms using a Wagner steamer. Didn't come off that pretty so like any other DIY'er I hit up RUclips. Thanks for the advice and will be hitting up the local hardware store to track down the needed supplies.

I m a DWYer, just finished removing ugly flowered wallpaper from our master bathroom. When the wallpaper was put on around 1970 the contractor didn't properly size the wall. Removing the wallpaper was a nightmare. My walls looked a lot like the walls in this video. I am getting ready to do my skim coats this weekend so this video was very helpful. Have to go to Ace Hardware to get the Gardz, as our Lowes doesn't have it. Thanks for the help.

I’m a professional wallpaper hanger. I usually scoff at a lot of these videos, but you’re spot on. Some kind of sealer to seal the damaged places in the drywall is very important. I really feel that frequently do it your selfers cause themselves much pain when they basically destroy the wall while being determined that the paper must come off. If it is smooth and tight it may be better to go over the paper rather than doing all that damage. The worse tool is the paper tiger. It really does a lot of damage. Thank you for a well informed video

DIY here. I have quite of bit of experience painting because my dad was a landlord and have several rental properties. I frequently helped clean up and paint after each lease. But new to dry wall and repair, my brother did that part and i would paint. Bought our forever home 2 years ago and it was a fixer upper. Finally getting around to remodeling a bathroom feom the 1980s with wall paper that was out directly on the dry wall. The walls are a mess but after watching your videos i think i can do a decent enough job.

    Homeowner DIY here.
I have 2 kitchen walls that the previous owner did a texture paint 1/2 way up the wall. I hid it with wall paper years ago but have decided that the time has come to get it back to all paint.
I got the wall paper off no problem and now it is time to deal with the texture. I ran a sander over it and the peaks come off the paint pretty easy but the valleys are still there. Did some research and found that there are several high build primer products on the market that I could use. I went to 3 paint supply stores, 2 box stores and a couple of small independent hardware stores. May as well have been talking to the wall. Not a one of them had a clue what I wanted. I even pulled up the product on the stores own website with a SKU number. Nope, can't get that.
So here I am. I'm not the best drywaller but I am willing to give this a try.
    Thanks for the lesson.

Mi amigo! I’m so glad I stopped removing the wallpaper in one section of the master bathroom. And decided that maybe I should look up how to repair before I continue the whole wall. No I am more confident that I can take down the old wallpaper and fix the minor imperfections that I have already made and will make when I bring the rest of the wallpaper down. 100% thank you for your tips!
