Its a lot of work and more difficult than it looks. But with sanding and more sanding, the results are very gratifying. It was good to see that you were able to do a wall or ceiling in sections after one section dries. Large areas can be very tiring on my old shoulders.
This help me so much. I had a wall in my bedroom that was bumpy and starting to crack and with this video it help me so much and now the wall looks like there never use to be a bump and crack
I can’t wait to do this. Just bought a house and the texture is inconsistent on the walls. It kind of looks like it was put on with a sponge or roller and I’d rather have no texture than inconsistent weird texture. I’ve watched a few videos and your product list is very convenient. It’s starting to add up in my Lowes cart but I know it will be worth it!
Hi! Congratulations on your new house! I have the same exact problem with the inconsistent texture around my home. Also I suggest using 45 or 90 minute joint compound so that you have quick drying times with a the necessary amount of working time 🙏🏽👍🏽😊
Wish I saw this sooner, I watched another similar more recent video of same roller idea but they used very wide blade 16" skimming blade and just ran straight down and made it look easy. Then my wall looked horrible being new at this. Tips on feather and how to apply pressure was big help.
Excellent video! Taking the time to show and explain the technique and speaking clearly is brilliant! I'll reference this video when I do my project! But!!! What about the next steps, sanding etc...😅 😅😅
I have lead based paint, with large electrical patches in the wall. I now want to re-finsh the wall. What is the best way to skim over Concrete patch and lead based paint? Should I: Primer + Drywall mud? Or Primer + concrete skim it, then paint?
My bathroom is the same size and wasn’t plastered correctly, skimmed or primed before the brand new plaster board was painted. Tomorrow. I’m going to make a very thin batch of plaster to skim over uneven areas, then prime and repaint the walls. There are three tiny walls. I think it shouldn’t take too long. I have decorating training from my daddy who was trained by my grandaddy.
Your the first step by step I have been able to understand for this project. I have a question though, I am going to be skim coating over OSB as it is the cheapest material I can find in this expensive world. Do you have a vid or pointers for doing this exact thing over OSB to achieve the exact same look?
An old post, I know, but to others contemplating this, OSB is a type of composite plywood made from scraps of wood and adhesive pressed into a sheet, and as such, is going to be very absorbent of the moisture from a drywall compound. This will introduce additional factors into the process as a result of the moisture absorption, such as prolonged dry time. It may be helpful to use a curing form of drywall mud, that must be mixed from powder, in this situation, rather than All Purpose mud or Topping compound (premixed).
Thank you do you think this will work on Old bathroom plastic sheet tile that the previous owners put on the kitchen walls? Trying to figure out how I can cover it thought about 1/8 drywall but will leave a gap where it meets upper wall HELP PLZ
So I noticed the shiplap left a yellowish brown residue. I am working on a project and after my first skim ghost image of shiplap has come back. Should I remove the drywall and start over or will another coat fix this issue?
Plastic drop clothes are best used to protect furniture or walls, but they don’t work for floors because everything you drop on it stays wet and you eventually track the stuff all over. That’s why pro painters prefer cloth…paint quickly drys on it and they stay put without tape, plus they’re more durable. Paper is a cheaper and disposable to cloth and stays put with enough painter’s tape…hope this helps
He doesn’t know but good observation that particular compound is for just what it says for when you are doing joints I hear it’s less thick and more smoother hence why it’s called lyte, they say it sands easier than the all purpose green bucket kind personally id use the green bucket all purpose because they say it has more glue content in it
@@FixThisHouse thanks for the reply man@ like asbestic in the popcorn paint ? it was put on maybe 15 years ago. the lathe and plaster on the other hand....
Hello, I would like to do this over old slightly damaged plaster. I filled big holes and cracks, sanded and washed. Do I need to prime paint before I do the skim coat? Thank you for your video
You have no idea how to skim coat a wall. I've been doing this for 30 years with a hawk and trowel. I would have had that done in one coat in 10 minutes. You would starve to death on piece work. Complete hack 😂😂😂
Awesome job explaining this! I appreciate that you took the time to shoot close-ups when demonstrating how to apply pressure to the knife.
Thank you so much for appreciating my video ! Means a lot! 🙏🏽😊
@@FixThisHouse Can old plaster not drywall that still has a damp like smell even though it has dried be blocked by a skim of jointing ? thanks

Yes, I'm glad he showed how to do a smaller section at a time. I wondered about that myself.
This help me so much. I had a wall in my bedroom that was bumpy and starting to crack and with this video it help me so much and now the wall looks like there never use to be a bump and crack
Thank you so much for the video. You gave me assurance on my task of skim coating a wall over my bar. Your video was simple and easy to follow.
thanks for the tips , it helped me skim coat my whole house in no time
I watched so many videos and yours was the best and easiest to follow up, thank you.
Absolutely agreed.
I love this video. I can understand it. So clear explanation
Thank you so much for the feedback and support! 🙏🏽😊

Thanks for the tips. After watching, I found that I did one thing right, lol. No wonder i have been so frustrated.
Excellent explanation & demonstration!
Really great video with great detail to show how to get great results. Thank you so much.
Can you use a pre mixed joint compound to skip that step?
Great explanation. I did exactly what was demonstrated and it came out as expected. Thanks,

You can take a mill bastard file and put an edge on your putty knife and it will make taking those little lines out of the wall easier
Why taping mud and not topping mud?
Thank you for doing this! It isn’t easy but this helps a lot.
No bubbling in the mud or primer or paint?
Hi. Do i have to put PVA mix with water before use this skimm? Cheers
Thank you for this tutorial!
I’m glad I could be of help! 🙏🏽😊
Very helpful! Thank you!
Thank you David! 🙏🏽😊
I get a lot of crators. Even on the 2nd coat. What am I doing wrong?
His Frickin Skim Skimmer next vid he was driving da beamer Skim Skimmer 👍🏻
Nice! What if the wall is already painted and you want to do a skim coat?
You can, just give the wall a little sanding first and wipe it down
Skimmed my bathroom ceiling today. Huge mess. Good thing I have nothing but the sub floor down right now.
I bet that but can I just trow the mud with knife instead use the roll maybe will be faster
Thank you do you think this will work on Old bathroom plastic sheet tile that the previous owners put on the kitchen walls? Trying to figure out how I can cover it thought about 1/8 drywall but will leave a gap where it meets upper wall HELP PLZ
Thanks man,now I can scheme a wall on my own
It's too easy and too helpfull
Is it possible to only apply skim coat at lower part only cos the wall is too high to reach till top😢
I struggle with this skim-coating shit so hard. Especially up in the corners and edges where the popcorn was. Bumpy AF. :(
Stay tuned! I’ll show some tips on how to get nice crisp edges! I’m going to working on a wall soon! 🙏🏽😊
It’s might be a stupid question but why isnt more easy to just replace the drywall sheets?
That is a good question! It’s another option! Not everyone wants rip apart drywall and deal with the demo and garbage disposal.
Can you use this on paneling
Do you need to prime before skimming?
Thank you so much you are amazing 🥳🥳
Glad I could be of help! 🙏🏽😊 thank you!

Hi! The best to fix this is to apply a primer with stain blocker first then apply your desired finish paint 🙏🏽👍🏽😊
@@FixThisHouse Thank you!

Hahaha! And we were just having a conversation about how to do this…Thanks for the info!
You got this sis 👊🏽😎
How i want this camical in Bangladesh? If i buy this camical in Bangladesh do you give me by see road?
Can this be done on the ceiling as well??
Of course. Why would you think that a ceiling would be any different than a wall, aside from being oriented horizontally?
but what do we do AFTER we skim? you say sand.. what grit??
Grit 120 should do 👍🏽😊
How long do you let it dry before doing the second coat
Hi! It all depends on the joint compound you use. There are 20, 45, 90 minute joint compound 👍🏽😊
Do you need to put on skim coat ?
Do you sand over to finish with a fine grit after the mud? Or only using the scraper thing to achieve desired smoothness?
Sounds like he only sands if the knife can’t smooth it out or maybe for large areas
Depends on how good you applied the mud. Beware if you sand, be careful because it generates a very fine dust.
how do you decide between using a plastic drop cloth vs a paper one? i have no experience using a paper drop cloth.

can you skim coat a wall that has a popcorn painted texture to it?
Yes you can. If the popcorn is thick it might bring to much weight and fall off. I would also double check for asbestos 🙏🏽

It depends, you get a feel after awhile

Good afternoon bro
This video is longer than that section should take. I feel like this is a mandatory training video for a corp job
2 days to DRY???
There are different types of joint compound, theirs 20 minute , 45 and 90 I usually like using 90 for big projects for more use time 👍🏽😊
I am a 77 year old retired plasterer what a time wasting experience Would have been so much quicker to skim it
He did skim it
The taping lyte is exactly what it says it’s for for taping delete this video
These videos always confused to me. Isn’t it easier just to cut out the drywall and replace it with a new sheet
You’d still have to skim the new wall 🤷🏻♀️
I’m confused that anyone would think that replacing the drywall is remotely easier.
@@sandsmarcit is for some of us lmao
