Great review of a classic Greyhawk module. I never ran it, but I mined it for ideas. 🙂

Joe, I wish you could do a video where you would directly layout how all the pre-1986 A/D&D modules & other pre-1986 material ties into & interlocks into the World of Greyhawk & with "Castle Greyheim" & the "Greyheim" modules. I understand why you probably feel you can't, but one can dream...

I believe its Robert Howard's "Shadows in the Moonlight" you're trying to remember? Where Conan rows his way to the Isle of Iron Statues.

I know it was 3.5 but they did add several more levels in 3 different Dungeon magazines for Maure Castle. Also in one of the last issues of dungeon you were fighting Dragoth in the rift canyon, his treasure hoard had i portal gem that was to used in Maure Castle.

The _Octychs!_ Triangular shards of colored metal imbued with strong conjuration magic, acting as _"plane shift"_ -like keys to the _"Eight-Pointed Star"_ extraplanar transportation device - leading to hidden demiplanes wherein rest the apprentices of Slerotin, the Last Mage of Power, and custodians to the lost secrets of Suel "Power Magic."
The "crimson" _Octych_ was found within Dragotha's lair, the "orange" within Castle Greyhawk, the "deep blue" within the Ghost Tower of Inverness, and the "yellow-gold" with Castle Maure itself (fan adventure, via "Warlock's Walk" from "Oerth Journal #23"). That leaves four unaccounted for… however, one _may_ be in the possession of Iuz the Old (or one of his servants, via "As He Lay Dying").
(My favorite character is a noble-born, pure-blooded Suel sorceress… so I've copied a LOT of Suel-related lore over the years. XÞ)

One of my absolute FAVORITES! I especially enjoyed the stone golem and how he crossed the abilities of the golem and the cockatrice feather weapon. I also loved the mini plane where the City of the Ancients awaited...😁

It was a rough module, took us a bit to figure out the weapons. I was playing my human split class fighter / magic user and a low level magic user at that time so I used iron statue weapon to hit the golem. I had to fight as a MU as I couldn't use my 17th level fighter abilities!

Oh, cool coincidence: My PCs are currently on the Abyssal Ship, "Demonwing" cataloguing The Abyss (kinda 'Sandbox-in-the-Abyss') and they recently arrived on The 14th Layer (The Steaming Fen of Miska the Wolf Spider) and I needed a Dungeon-Crawl map and grabbed the map from Level One of Maure Castle / Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure. Of course, I've had to re-design all the rooms and traps -- I just wanted a ready-made Dungeon Map with a couple giant rooms, and the great halls of Room 7/8 and 17-19 fit perfectly! I mean, it was just last game session that we started in The Steaming Fen and I used the map.

I ran Maure castle. Players loved it back in 3e days. Arley the Weaver became a permanent fixture of my campaign world to this day. He sells “discount magic items” (aka flawed/cursed).

Just out of curiosity, how would you stat up Lord Felnorith? I know he is sort of a stand-by character that can possibly be used as a search & rescue hand and I've always been interested in using him in some way in a Greyhawk campaign, but I've never seen his attributes anywhere. I think he's a fighter of the same level as Yrag, and is Lawful neutral, but again, no attributes. Previous DM had him at Str 14, Int 13, and 17s in all his other stats. What do you think? He also has many swords. I know I could make it all up and I don't mind doing that, but I kinda like some basis in fact to work from.

I've run this in 5e, incorporating some elements of dungeon magazine (although it is set some 20 years or so in the future) to complete it up. One thing is sure tho, 5e characters are much more powerful than 1e ones at first level. They can tank more and hit more consistently.
Anyway, back to what happened. After exploring the first floor, they met Arley, who scammed them with the girdle of stone giant strength and changed a chromosome in a player (we laughed, player was ok with it). They beat Arley, avoid the golem, and go to the second floor, where they split up. One group of two enters the chambers of Tomorast and the fight is on. I never had so much fun while playing an evil character: evil, chaotic, with guts. Anyway, they manage to almost kill him, but a player fails two saves for xp and petrification; seeing the dire situation, the other player tries to grab him on her back and run, but rolls a nat 1. They fell on top of each other and were moved to the third floor for Kerzit. The others meanwhile, rushed down and got completely demolished by the killers and such. This resulted in a TPK, with their last moments being the sight of Kerzit munching down on them.
