Canoe plans: Selway Fischer Wren and its 16ft
This video was originally made for entertainment purposes and not a build along with all of the specifics included. If you're thinking of building a canoe DO IT, its worth the time and effort and they really are things of beauty. The plans for this canoe came from Selway Fisher which i found to be extremely thorough but not always clear. I kind of followed the plans and made it up at the same time so its actually more of a 'based on' kind of design. When I was sourcing the marine ply, i had timber merchants laughing at me thinking you could make a canoe from it. They told me that it couldnt be done and treat me like a naive child. Well they were wrong.

- I lost my son aged 4 to Dipg, he literally died on my lap 10.02.2020. He was called Jack Lacey (search him up) and was my best friend and one of the biggest loves of my life.
- I've Completed the coast to coast twice on bicycles. Once on a MTB offroad and once by Road Cycle
- I've ran both a marathon and completed a 50 mile Fell race (Ultra marathon)
- I have completed both Yorkshire and National 3 Peaks Challenges
- Ive been to University twice, to do Fine Art, and a PGCE in Design and Technology
- I'm a black belt in Karate
- I've camped extensively around the UK and studied Bushcraft for a long time

For all the wood be (pun intended) plywood boat builders out there, here is a pro tip. For laying glass tape into epoxy, use those really cheap disposable bristle brushes from the hardware store. Cut the bristles so that they are about 6mm in length. This accomplished a few things. 1) it won’t soak up and then waste a good bit of epoxy. 2) the brush can be used with a brushing motion to apply resin, and in a stabbing motion to wet out tape/cloth. 3) the short bristles are less likely to fall out of the brush, only to be forever embedded in your epoxy, like the full length bristles.
Hope some of you out there find that useful.
The Chinese brushes available in my country are so terrible that half the bristles come out. I use disposable sponge brushes cut down as you suggested to keep it from sucking too much resin. But actually once the brush is saturated it won't soak up more resin so not a biggie on a large project. Also using mylar plastic (like on cheap report folders) placed below the splice and on top of the fiberglass tape will cut down on sanding.

Cool build ive always found it easiest to apply Epoxy or remind with a disposable Chip Brush I usually trim the bristles shorter with a pair of scissors to be able to have more control

Thanks for sharing. I have seen some making a scarf joint. Alternative a fingerjoint to make a stronger join. Fingerjoints a very easy to make. You let the two peaces of ply overlap 3 inches. And with a jigsaw you cut "finger shapes" from one side to the other..Only problem with that is that your boat will be 6 inches shorter..👀

Ha, takes me back. I built my Wren in 2014. We have had many happy hours sailing her around Chichester harbour. After six years wear and tear I have now sheathed the lower part of the hull with fibre glass as I got fed up with all the repainting. Next step is some metal inserts for the ends of the bottom runners as these have taken a fair beating. Happy sailing.
Hey man. How'd you transport yours? Only ever been out with mine a couple of times due to it being too heavy and long.
@@wjlacey I have an old Ford Mondeo estate with roof bars. I lift one end of the canoe onto the rear roof bar with the canoe the right way up. I then lift the other end up and slide the canoe forward onto the front roof bar. The canoe is then positioned slightly to one side and rolled upside down and held in place with rachet straps. You need to be careful it doesn't fall off when rolling over. You could not bother with the upside down bit. I live in Southern England where it rains a lot so the canoe is stored/ moved upside down.
Mine comes in at 35 kg with the fibreglass. I can lift it on my own. The difficult bit is rolling it upside down and then holding the canoe whilst walking under it to a central lift position. It helps that I am only 5'4" tall and have mountain biked for near 30 years, Strong legs and not far to lift. The difficult bit really is holding it whilst rolling the canoe over. I have been meaning to design a roll over brace to help with this. I used to do the rotation before the lift onto the car but it was awkward, especially when wet and slippery. I dropped it once. One other thing, if lifting on your shoulders fit good padding to the central strut/yoke.
Practice a bit before doing any of the above for real. You can also buy wheeled dollies for moving the canoe around. Have fun.
@@aeropunk4127 thanks for that. I had to laugh at the 35kg bit though. Jesus christ I've over built mine. It is prob 100+ kilo. I've got a vid of me somewhere picking it up and my body bucking under the weight. I'm 6ft 2 and not scrawny too.
As for vehicle. I have a high top lwb transit that I've converted to a camper. Put it on the roof once. Man oh man lol, that much weight, that high up, way too top heavy.
@@wjlacey Yes 100kg is quite heavy. Did you build yours for shooting rapids?
Mine was built for relatively gentle rivers and harbour sailing with my 3 children. It's a shame you haven't got to use yours more. How about building a light weight one ? It's always quicker the second time around.

Total, How much would you say it cost you?
You can actually use reinforced tape rather than metal or plastic ties, especially on a lightweight project and it keeps the epoxy from dripping out.

A scarf joint is probably better for joining the two pieces of the sides.

@@stemcleeds there's a second and third part. The tape I went all the way a cross inside and on the outside I put on pieces to fit between the wire if I remember rightly

3 or 4 mm with glass for strength is all you need
Yeah it's super heavy. Will last a long time though.
Regulations in the UK is minimum 25mm thick for plywood boats, grp just makes it more waterproof

Thank you, you know about him passing don't you? Jack lacey dipg on Google will bring up all the details. Miss him beyond words. The boat weighed too much to lift. Plans said to use 3mm ply I used 6mm. Also I added those runners on the bottom and Ash yoke, boxes front and rear and a mahoosive fibreglass matt on the bottom
@@wjlacey Yes I read the comments about Jack your angel. Love the video and the tenacity it took build it. I am really looking at build a stitch and glue myself, but I need it to be light enough for me to lift (no more that 50 pounds)

Get a couple of drills, not one, take your time and the ultimate, i have 2 things id change. 1 - make a smaller version so that its more easily transported and 2, dont make it as heavy as mine!
Very nice boat/ project. I do want to point out one small tip on fine tuning plywood to your final dimension the fastest way possiblr is to use a beltsanfer. And some. Aggressive belts usually 80 grit is good i did professional Architectual woodworking for over 20 years and at my last position i had over 40 people installing millwork for my division i will add it is a messy way to do it and its best to buy one with the largest belt capacity you can afford. Ive owned and used most brands and have found in general the dust collection systems all stink No matter what brand most shop guys prefer the Porter Cable brand sanders i find them to be a little heavy and uncomfortable to use for long periods of time i. Used a Makita brand as my “go to” for many years and ive beat the heck out of it while the bearings are getting noisy it still works fine BTW the bearing issue was my fault as i actually used it to sand off hardened Barnacles and bottom paint Off of my fishing boat In order to do that i spen hours using the tool upside down in tight spaces so th dust had no where to go but in the sander ? Bearings are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace i will probably replace brushes as well as a preventative measure And i would expect it to run well for many more. Years as i do think Makita builds good tools that are well engineered In all honesty ive looked at Harbor Freight belt sanders and. They are. Made a little on the cheap side but they work ok and do have the benefit of being light weight the Dewalt ones use to be one of the lighter ones but you had to settle for a 18 inch belt most. Woodworking shops i was associated. Would supply 21 and 24 inch belts as that was what they used in their shops and buying your own 18 inch belts at a retail store can get costly Other wise i did really like the stitch and glue method as that is my preference. For a small wooden boat i did however restore a old 30 foot Chris Craft cabin Cruiser that was double planked having Mohogany boards over plywood from the factory she was tough but a pain to refasten IMO Looked great when i was done but a horrible financial investment. That i pretty much knew going into as ive had 17 or 18 boats in my lifetime and always tell my freinds when they ask its a terrible financial investment yet a wonderful investment fo fun if you can afford one other wise dont buy a boat Obviously I’m a lover of being on the water and ive boated All over the Florida Keys and the Carribean thru my life as well as many years on the Chesapeake Bay from skiffs to sailing Yachts and Power boats

Too much! I went properly overkill, I didn't want it to break. The matting and epoxy on the bottom of the boat is about 10 - 15kg alone! I should have used 3mm marine ply but used 6mm. Those runners on the bottom weren't meant to be there. I used Ash as the yoke. Basically it's too heavy and too long. If you wanted a go at this yourself, go for the 12 or 14ft and don't beef it up as much as mine
Does it matter what type of woods?
I would say absolutely. I used Marine Plywood for its quality/ durability but some do use normal plywood which i didn't like as there's often a lot of voids hidden inside th sheets that create weak spots. Any wood can be used for the gunwales and for the yoke, if you want something beautiful, durable and long lasting, then use a hardwood. I used Ash.
Third generation boat builder here. There are a lot of factors to take into account when choosing the wood. It's possible to build a boat using exterior grade ply, you'll just have to be sure to use glass and PLENTY of epoxy. It'll give you a few years service, but it'll begin to fail and rot far sooner than marine ply. It also won't look near as pretty as using marine. Marine is stronger, uses a better water resistant glue between the plys, and has fewer voids. It'll give you more time between repairs (everything rots eventually).
If Marine ply is out of your budget, or difficult to find in your location, you can always go the cedar strip method. Most hardware stores carry rough cedar that you can cut down for strips.

Bought them mate. To be honest with you, i didnt find the instructions of much use and the plans were pretty badly drawn too. Selway Fisher Wren. Me and 2 other lads put together for the plans and shared them for each other.

All I had at the time. Experiences for my little lad, atmosphere, because I was too eager to put the tools away, gluing times, better than being sat in the house etc...

Yeah search for selway fisher wren 16ft. Though I wish I'd made it smaller so its easier to transport
@@wjlacey thanks for the reply. I managed to find the plans. I made the same mistake as you. Bought plans for Peasemarsh 14 not thinking about the length and realised it's huge so just bought another set of plans for a smaller Peasemarsh.

Using your wife's/girlfriend's art brush to wet-out the fiberglass cloth - not a good idea. You should have staggered the joints where you laminated 2 pieces together to make them longer. The boat is weaker with all the joints lined up. I understand you are trying to maximize wood and length, but at compromised strength.
