Golfers tend to want to hit the ball further than their playing partners. Lots of RUclips content makers are always bragging about how far they hit their clubs. Viewers are sold on the idea that with no training and no practice that they can do the same instantly just by changing an aspect of their swing. If you can hit it long consistently, that's great. If with that length you spray it, ....not great. Choke down, club up, and work yourself into a better game. As any sport, a heavy emphasis on basics with lots of repetition builds a foundation for success. Like Alex says, take these tips to the course. If you can't do the flop shot, dont. Get your 7 iron and get it on the green. If your driver is sporadic, grab a 3 wood or choke down. Thank you for the reminders, Alex. Hopefully, I will make some strides on an upcoming golf trip.

@@danielgreene6480 i only got better by trying those shots on course.. if it doesnt work, what went wrong, mostly the lie of the ball.. that is what helped me learn.. ya, i did rip a wicked flop, to a shortsided green..

      Bloody well said!
I struggle to carry my drives 250. I’ll try to send it and I tend to slice. Sometimes I gets in my head. But when I just relax and swing I’ll find the fairway or first cut around 240 total distance.
Anyone reading this, new golfer or not. Screw how far you can hit the ball. What matters is dispersion. That’s why the old heads at the club shoot under 80.

One thing that also deserves mention is the fact that gripping the handle at the very end leads inevitably to "choking the chicken", which is a clubhead speed killer. That swell at the end of the handle is there for a reason--it allows a "soft hand" grip on the club with the fingers BELOW that swell, giving you the confidence that the club won't fly out of your hand. (Use a good quality golf glove too). Take a look at any carpenter's hammer-you will see that same swell. This allows the generation of clubhead speed with control--if you don’t have a death grip on the handle, all the muscles of your arms, shoulders and torso are much more free to move fluidly, allowing the club to "do the work", generating that elusive sneaky speed everyone is seeking.

I grip down on all my clubs, and I'm always in the low 80's, until this year when I decided to bend more over the ball, now I'm always in the 70's, and the other day I shot a 69, I'm 63 and I still get it out there 260 to 290 sometimes, I play from the whites also, not the senior tee boxes. So grip down, hunch over the ball more, have a relaxed smooth swing, and most importantly, HAVE FUN!!

I recently hit on choking up a bit, especially my driver. That 1 to 1.5 inches made a difference. I'm stuck at 85. I think in the spring this may be a key to my goal of single digit handicap next year.

For years, the first thing I did when buying a new driver was have the shaft shortened to 44 inches. Of course, that also lightened the swing weight considerably.
When I started gripping a 1/2 inch down with my irons, my instructor told me that I should have the shaft shortened and grip it normally, then. He kept insisting that I "take the full measure" of the club.

Black, blue or white tee boxes don’t make a difference. It just means your second and third shots are with longer clubs.
Just be consistent. Know your distances. Plan your course management. Realize you will always need to adjust and compensate for the prior shot and plan your next shot.
    Enjoy.

I am struggling so bad I am on the verge of quitting right now. Can't really afford pro lessons at the moment and I can't seem to figure it out. I am just bad all around. Slicing my drives 7/10 shots. My irons go wherever, I shank them, hook it, duff it, top it. If it is bad I do it. Same with my wedges now. I just started 6 months ago and I am a 18 handicap. I could hit my irons fairly well but everything else sucked. Past 2 months everything is just bad and I dont see the point in getting on the course when I am barely making contact right now.. Its been so bad that even the good shots dont feel good anymore LOL

Don't give up Matt. Try and find a full instructional video ( i believe mine was Sam Snead back in the late 1980's as i was 11yrs old when i first started playing this game, and it helped alot) where they go step by step on all body positions and all shot scenerios. I think it was around 1 to 2 hrs long, and cost around $20 (im sure its more expensive now, but should be cheaper than lessons) but maybe you can get lucky and find a good one for free online. Hope this helps, GL sir
