  • Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) was a "genius". So says the New York Times, Smithsonian Magazine, the Met and many others. But was she? Largely unknown until the 1933 publication of her autobiography, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas which was Stein’s life through the eyes of her lesbian lover, as written by Stein, #GertrudeStein was little more than an American art collector in #Paris for the majority of her life. The Autobiography of #AlicebToklas is an almost complete control of narrative from the one person who could tell it. Today, with all of the exhibits and fanfare it would seem as if Stein was some sort of artistic contemporary as F. Scott Fitzgerald, when the reality was Gertrude Stein was a glorified art dealer, a medical school dropout, a confused woman from a very rich family who relied on her stepfather’s #Bachrach photography network to push modern art to America.

Gertrude Stein always makes me think of The Emperor who was naked, but surrounded by sycophants. A fascinating life, but not someone one would wish to know personally.

@cindyadams9264 Do you know "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"? The alien Vogans produced poetry so appalling that the listener would prefer to eat their own leg rather than listen to it. I feel the same way about Gertrude Stein.

The Stein Collection show at the NY Met a few years ago made clear that the real visionary of new art was Leo Stein, not Gertrude, as witness her purchases after Leo left the scene.

"Limbo, in Catholic theology, was believed to be the border place between heaven and hell where those souls who died without being baptised, though not condemned to punishment, were deprived of eternal happiness with God in heaven." The concept of Limbo has gradually died out. I'm 74 and Limbo was very much believed in by my parents' generation. I, until I knew better, believed in all the Catholic Hocus-pocus... .

I was brought up catholic and was taught limbo was where unbabtised babies went. Purgatory was where sinners went who renounced their sins like divorce and sex before marriage etc. At least from what I remember.

One of my favorite Woody Allen movies since Annie Hall. It was a magical fantasy into the realm of what if’s. Owen Wilson was fantastic as the innocent slightly befuddled character who gets to meet all his luminary heroes. Don’t why this film wasn’t more popular

These people are always around for artists. They're the majority of art and music scenesters. Alot of perpetuated gossip, you know, opinions based on interpretations of other people's actions kind of assumptions without verifications of the individual's truth.. Sounds very tragic ultimately. Gertrude Stein has been a seminal literary force to many writers and poets in her wake, particularly women, into the 21st century, whether you.like her personality; Pound had at least Nazi leanings. She identified with cubist artists like Picasso whom she had a close bond-her writing became cubist . Like Picasso, she was ahead of her time. Her work has a wonderful rhythm, is humorous, and exhilarating in its openness. Listen to her read her portraits on Picasso and Matisse, whom she had also been close. you can go to Penn Sounds to hear recordings.
