Waldemar, within your great insights and explanations your wit and wonder lies the golden key of your understanding of the Catholics sensibility! So many well informed and well intended modern eyes look on certain paintings with a degree of 'colour blindness' that your corrective glasses dispel. The Arnolfini picture is beautifully and lovingly restored - what troubled me as a newly married man gazing at the picture as my wife told me of the "wedding" makes sense to me now as a widower. There is an eternal wedding but they are on the other side of the great devide - the pain of rememberence and the dark tones that troubled my young eyes is all too understood now, "grief is the price we pay for love". I'm always for everything in book form but I have to say art works are great on digital video and also the aliveness of being in the settings as WJ takes us all over the world is a real special treat on digital video. It wouldn't have the same immersive quality in a book. Hi Mark, I keep missing live shows. Trying to keep up. All good here. Starting a new full bathroom. Bucket list stuff. Staying tuned. Your work remains stellar and I appreciate it. Peace Cheers Onward.
This is just my personal take, but if you really look at Victorine in the painting, REALLY look at her, she's sizing you up. She likes what she sees, and is inviting you to join them. The female nude had always been about the male gaze. They were unconscious objects of male appreciation and lust. But the whole painting is about Victorine's gaze. She's looking at you, the viewer, the way you're supposed to be able to look at her. She's taking the control: between you and her, she's the dominant one. I think that's why the painting aroused such strong negative feelings. Whether they realized it or not, the critics were subconsciously reacting to a modern woman not only taking control of her own sexuality, but asserting herself as the dominant partner in the sexual exchange.
I agree but I think this was a gaze that these 'respectable' men were used to - the gaze of the prostitute, looking knowingly and scornfully at another punter (UK) or john (USA).

You appreciate the art and the painting so much more when you are given an insight into the context and the artist behind the picture. I just love cultural history ❤❤
I stumbled upon this documentary, having a passing interest in art but no more. My eyes have been well and truly opened here. I never knew such meaning was subtlely conveyed in all these old paintings.
Waldemar Januszczak is just brilliant!
I love how Waldemar thanks us for watching him when I cannot even think of the words to thank him enough for presenting these documentaries. I also believe the Tempest painting is a representation of Demeter.
Top notch again Mr J. Bravo 👏👏👏👏👏☕️☕️🎨🎨
I never knew I was so interested in art. I'm enjoying your videos, and learning a lot, too.
Thank you so much for the entertainment and the knowledge. This series is wonderful and I'm looking forward to watching the other videos you've posted.
Waldemar is fascinating with his perspective about art and artist. He is so interesting and perceptive yet at times so amusing. Watching this art critic is for me a feast for my eyes and ears. Delightful!🤭
Wonderful as always
... Waldemar is wonderful presenter.
I adore this channel. I love how you talk.
Thanks!
My husband and I recently went to an art museum in Norfolk Virginia that was doing an exhibit on M. C. Escher, enjoyed looking at all his art. It would be neat to see if Perspective did a doc on him, like maybe what did his his English and European contemporaries make of his style. :)
My favorite Waldemar line - “the Last Supper which has been falling off the wall since he painted it”.
I just heard him say something like: "While it wasn't necessarily a marriage of convenience, it was certainly a very convenient marriage".
Well put.
What about the classic " and because of his ultimate sacrifice... It'll be cherries all round for us again in heaven..."
"...thus Venus was the nautical fruit of Uranus's frothing testicles"

Even when my own research leads me to a conclusion different from his, I love his presentation!
I clicked like before I saw the video, of course!
Thanks for posting
Great stories, interesting art! I love how the camera returns to/ lingers on the art as we hear about it so we can dream along.
Wonderful to see Waldemar presenting again. I was ignorant of this channel but am not on a mission to box set watch all videos. 👍👏👌
“It takes hutzpah, and Frenchness.” Hahahah seriously best presenter in the business. Waldemar is the man.
Best ever description of the Power
Of a truly beautiful women -- she's completely oblivious to the flood of adoring compliments shouted at her.
Brilliant video!
Great and very fulfilling interpretation of The Tempest. Thank you for it!
Loving the 2nd part of the video; all towards the end. It get interesting, thank you!
I absolutely love this show. As a self taught artist I missed out on all the history associated so feel like a student learning from you. I need more :)
Always a joy to Watch art with you 🎵❤️🎶🙏
Amazing man Steve so proud of you and you positive messages
Love your work, thanks ❤️
Fantastic documentary. Waldemar is excellent. Blessings.
I would love to see one of these on Giorgione's the Three Philosophers... lot's of symbolism in it and mysterious as they get
its the first I've watched a musical. Its the first time I've watched theater and yet this year it was my goal. Well done girl stay humble, I just heard of you today . LynxScar from South Africa.
Art is a hidden language. Only few truly understand it.
I love Waldimar. In my dreams we are married and he never stops talking. ❤
Thank you, Perspective, Thank you, RUclips!
Would it be possible for WaldemarJanuszczak to save all of his work in written words (book) because all of his stories are the masterpieces about the masterpieces and they should be saved and distributed as permanently and easy as possible.
Wow
Great thought
The internet is pretty permanent
I'm always for everything in book form but I have to say art works are great on digital video and also the aliveness of being in the settings as WJ takes us all over the world is a real special treat on digital video. It wouldn't have the same immersive quality in a book. However there are wonderful picture books where you can see these super star pictures and nowadays you can find these books very cheap second hand since people prefer the "Tom Ford" book on their library table, haha, there is a little dig at the world.
thank the BBC they made these shows. You realize this right?
Fantastic! Your commentaries are brilliant, so different from the tepid and pulseless art history commentaries I had read and heard in my youth. Many thanks for sharing your insights!
Thanks
Cool documentary! This guy is really awesome!
Just recently discovered - thank you!
An incredibly deeply researched series on a highly talented Man, thank you
Waldemar is the BEST!!!!!!
That was wonderful- thank you
I always come back here because this episode is so good i can't ignore it when it gets suggested 😂
This was fantastic.
Love the new cabinet! Looks great in the room! Really enhanced the height of the room.
Waldemar is perfect for the job.
Waldemar is my hero. He:
a. does his homework
b. asks probing questions
c. does more homework
d. ponders
e. uses his intuition, and
f. explains his conclusion in a convincing and captivating way.
Wow.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrews described as "a pair of giant spiders in the middle of a web" made me laugh loud enough for my wife to ask what's so funny. 😂
