Tan Tao-Liang started training in Tae kwon do (TKD) around the age of 12. By the age of 18, he had been the TKD instructor at Busan University and the Busan Police in South Korea. In 1972 Tan started filming The Hero of Chiu Chow aka Hero of the Waterfront (1973). Tan did, at that time, something unique in his debut performance. As stated on the movie poster: '100 times the ticket price, seeing this thrilling shot is worth it. The gecko skills are rare in life. This statement refers to Tan, in the film, climbing between two walls using only his legs. This skill was touted to be the first time that it was seen on-screen. Other variations of this skill were seen in films such as Kung Fu Gold aka Two Dragons Fight Tiger (1974) and Young Master (1980). I remember seeing Tan in Dynasty (1977), which is reportedly the first kung fu film in 3D, in a movie theater. Yes, one had to fight the urge to duck. I like The Hot, The Cool, and The Vicious (1976). Challenge of Death (1978) was not his best performance.

He is one of my favourite kickers but I never noticed till now that he basically only kicks with his left leg, which seems strange for a tkd master. I tried doing some research about a year ago on “Pern Gang” , the dual role bad guy in Leg Fighters, but wasn’t able to uncover very much. Possibly due to this not being his real name ?. It’s very hard with English translations of Asian names. His tumbling intro in the opening credits of that movie show his athleticism. I’ve seen him in several other of Lee Tso Nam’s movies, so he must’ve liked him. Have you done an episode on Lo Mang yet Ant ?.
