Legendary Three Dog Night keyboard player Jimmy Greenspoon takes a few minutes to chat with Mike Preston of psychobabbletv.com on a recent stop in St. Charles, IL
as a keyboard player, I grew up as a kid learning all Jims riff's....It pisses me off how people under rate him!......He is truely one of the best!....I am sad from his loss....But his playing lives on in me, along with all the other great keyboardist I grew up learning how to play...Jimmy was my first Idol!....and still is. Thankyou Jimmy!
I'm half way through his book and I can't put it down. What a remarkable guy. Great talent and so strong to come out clean and sober. RIP Jimmy - you'll be missed. Three Dog Night should be in the Rock HOF!!!!
It's so sad to hear about his Cancer illness. His wife Susie posted that Jimmy may only have one month left to live. Please keep Jimmy and his family in your prayers. I loved his organ playing in Three Dog Night. A great musician. Definitely a big component to the Three Dog Night sound. God Bless You Jimmy. Thank You for all the great music and for being a big part of my life back in the 70's up til now in 2015. Three Dog Night fan for life.
After years growing up on Chipmunks, Monkees and Top40 am in NY, I heard Jimmys Chest Fever organ intro on "Captured Live at the Forum" and I was transformed to a whole new level of Music and ROCK and Roll!!! Jimmy's contribution and that bands intensity on THAT album became the standard that I judged all live acts to follow. NO Group took such great songs and morphed them into the best live songs ever!!! And Jimmy was the magic, heart and soul to their exhilarating powerful sound!! Great band and all but Jimmy was such the icing!!! Many Thanks Jimmy and RIP!!!
Thank YOU Lila! So nice to see and bond with others who feel as you do. This band was so outstanding in there early live performances! And I've seen many concerts. Captured Live is such a outstanding example of how to ratchet up a song with such intensity and passion! Over 3 decades later, still has the legs!! Take Care.
You're welcome Dale. I have loved and still love Three Dog Night since the 70's. To this day I still play their music in my car at least once a week. I wished they had reconciled but since Cory Wells is gone I can't see that happening. But at least we have their music to play and listen to whenever we want. I hated the fact that they were called a "cover" band! If anything Three Dog Night made the cover songs way better than the original. I didn't know when I was younger that they covered other Artist's songs. The music was so good. They were know for their "live" shows. I was lucky enough to see them in Long Beach at the Queen Mary back in the 80's. Three Dog Night should of been inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They were it back in the 70's that's for sure! Tfs and have a great day. :)
I began with It Ain't Easy album, aged ,9... I appreciate the background on Joy to the World. Many may not know its release and success were completely unanticipated,!!!!! 545
Respectful interviewer, not as common these days but did a wonderful interview. Mr. Greenspoon may he RIP. Wish we had more celebrities like him around today to inspire people to do what you need to do to be truly "free', and change up!
I met him in San Diego, CA in 1984 after a great show. He was a wonderful person to visit with. I first saw them back in high school in Salem, Oregon in 1969. They open for Steppenwolf. TDN absolutely BLEW Steppenwolf off of the stage. R. I. P. Jimmy. You will always be the finest on the keyboards.
@@attygarland6909 Cancer in 2015 at 67 years of age. I currently have his book on order "One is the Loneliest Number". Just read Chuck's book "Three Dog Nightmare". Looking to compare notes, but an interesting read nonetheless. RIP Jimmy/Cory.
Saw them in Allentown in 69 and in Phillie later. They were a great live band!! I remember after the concert they were walking to their limo and I was chasing them and I said "Chuck!!" He turned around and I said "Can I touch your hand??" He looked like "Why? Who am I?"
We sponsored a concert back in the mid '80s and I was lucky enough to have dinner with the band. They were absolutely great, funny and real. Jimmy was a hoot, too. RIP
I think he was the greatest keyboard player and very underrated!! His B3 solo on the album Around The World With Three Dog Night was just phenomenal!!! He will be missed but surly not forgotten!! (As I raise my glass)
I always thought his short solo on the Savoy Brown tune Coming Down Your Way was the greatest keyboard rocker I ever heard, although I suspect it was beefed up a little with some overdubbing. Too bad that tune (and others on the album of the same name) didn't get more airplay/recognition. And that intro to Family of Man - nobody ever raped a Hammond like that .. wow ..
Minus the greatest guys Corey and Jimmy, This week coming TDN will be playing the local casino, and I can't wit. R.I.P Jimmy Greenspoon and Corey Wells, Miss you Brothers
Sad, jimmy fiefdoms year after this interview. He was a great entertainer and a big part of three dog night's success. I have an empty feeling in my heart from his death.
Spoooonnnnerrrr! Amazing that he has reached that age with all that prior serious drug history and yet seems completely clear-minded .. What's the secret?
***** If you look on the TDN facebook page under TDN changed their profile dated March 30, 2015; you will find towards the bottom of the page comments made by Susie Greenspoon, Jimmy's widow, regarding Chuck and a reunion. I'm quite sure she's also speaking for Jimmy.
***** According to Susie regarding a reunion :Give up the Chuck reunion. Ain't going to happen. When are you folks going to figure that out. Three Dog Night, the title, has nothing to do with the singers. AND since the current lineup has been together than the time spent Chuck spent in the band, why broke what certainly doesn't need to be fixed????? (in reply to Shmuel Stephen Rockwerk) Susie's opinion of Chuck:There are two sides to every story. There's Chuck's side, then there is the truth. The poor, poor pitiful act with Chuck just doesn't cut it anymore. He fucked up a good career, that's it, plain and simple! (in reply to Pat Goodwin). @10153122515004484 @10153122515004484
Rita Geller This is what I would have expected - but I'm still sorry she feels so much hatred. Chuck is doing just fine, and his show actually SOUNDS like Three Dog Night because he has the voice. The only thing pitiful is the attitude of these guys.
***** The harmony in Chuck's band stinks. (Paul Kingeey, the third dog in the TDN band, can really hit the high notes and the harmony is beautiful). Also Chuck sings some of the songs on which Cory sang the lead. IMO, he's not as good as Cory. Moreover, when Jimmy was first reported to be ill and the subject of a reunion concert to pay for Jimmy's medical expenses was discussed by Chuck's fans, both Jimmy and his wife were totally against it.
Looks as though the interview was conditional and hinging on NO MENTION OF CHUCK NEGRON. When Jimmy brought up his experiences with drugs I though for certain that he would say something about Chuck in passing but I guess it's a sore subject for all those guys. Chuck caused a LOT of damage. I read his book and never before knew that Chuck was "THE ONE WHO KNOCKS" aa Walter White put it. Dealers were terrified of Chuck. He had many violent episodes many of which came close to being lethal for whoever was in the room with him. Anyway great to hear from Jimmy, I got to meet him for a few seconds when I rented my Yamaha CP80 to him at a show in NC in 1982.
Hammond organ, Jimmy Greens poon and Jon Lord! Simply the best!

Hoyt Axton was a hell of a song writer. They were wise to do his stuff.
I miss these guys
This was a great interview
We met many times, but never had taken time to talk. I'll always regret that. You were a superb musician and person. See you in the rainbow!

Rip Jimmy keyboard virtuoso
HE WAS THE BEST!!!
RIP Jimmy. RIP Joe...RIP Cory.
Jimmy Greenspoon is Jimmy Greenspoon! Is there anyone else like him out there somewhere? Not really.
He was great.
Thanks!
RIP Jimmy Greenspoon
Spoooonnnnerrrr! Amazing that he has reached that age with all that prior serious drug history and yet seems completely clear-minded .. What's the secret?
That's true. Just like CCR, never off the charts.
Never knew the history of Spooner in the band. Really interesting.
Awesome.
Rest in ☮️ jimmy and Cory
Out in the Country!
No mention of Chuck Negron. There would have been no Three Dog Night success without Chuck's lead vocals on most of their hits.
