Once you roll your ankle, there is a high likelihood that you will reinjure it again. And I'm talking about percentages in the 80s. It's only a matter of time. The ligaments have been stretched and will never return to the original strength and length. You will feel completely healthy after your recovery and every once in a while, your ankle will literally just give out and roll. It's impossible to predict when and how this will happen so wearing a figure 8 brace permanently is the best approach. If you have the time, ankle tape with proper taping technique is the best because of the low profile but for most recreational players, its better to just get a slightly bigger boot size and wear braces on both ankles to even out the feelings in both legs. The human body was never meant to manipulate a ball at high speed while rapidly changing directions. You're essentially setting your body up for injury. Why not provide it with some extra technological support if you're going to do that once or twice a week? What is the harm? Are you still trying to make it into the pro league at the age of 32?
I rolled both ankles when i was 20/21 a few times. Gradually rehabilitated them with a brace, kept re-injuring slightly but i kept on plugging away at re-strengthening them. By my mid 20s my ankles were as strong as ever and i was faster and sharper than ever and playing with no braces. So there is hope. That being said, i stopped playing at 28 (not because of injury, just chose to). I never wrote off coming "out of retirement" for a brief spell but by my late 30s it was looking unlikely. I'm in my 40s now and starting to feel the necessity to keep pushing my body, and i get bored of mundane exercises like the gym so after not playing for 14 years i decided to give it another try and one of my ankles went again 😂 Only fairly mildly though. Going to get another brace and work on building up more strength in them again. One crucial tip to learn is if you feel yourself starting to go, don't fight it, instantly take the weight off the foot that feels like it's about to roll. You can bake that into your motor skills so it happens fast enough to prevent serious injury. You really need to bake it into your motor skills tho, your consciousness can't process it fast enough. Also do controlled exercises that work that aspect of your ankles. Eg jogging/skipping sidewards, or just skipping left and right on the spot - staying on your toes and shifting your weight from one foot to the other. Find an open field and run in repeating S shapes from one end of the pitch/field to the other and back. Start with slow turns and gradually build up speed. With all of these be careful not to push it to far or you'll make it worse again. Start small and gradually build up, if it starts to feel like it might go, call it a day and give it a few days to heal. Do that week in week out and you can gradually increase the pace and the force they're able to deal with. Be very wary of uneven ground (it can be good practice but be careful), and don't forget the above tip - if you feel like it's going to go, take the weight off straight away (even if it means falling over). But i agree you're pushing your body harder than the mechanisms it evolved for, and ankle braces are fantastic, if you feel like they'd be better as a permanent feature when playing then do it. At my age i might have to!
Taping is not better. The tape loses stiffness over the course of the match. The lateral strap ankle brace is the best...after a series of ankle injuries I now wear it for both basketball and soccer. It’s definitely prevented reinjury from the inevitable bad tackle ...
I don’t think it is that it highlights that your injured, I think it’s that if you have to wear a brace that suggests that you have weakness, and if you have weakness then you shouldn’t be playing From acl surgery myself, I have been told to not rely on braces for support, if you need an external brace to play then you shouldn’t be playing
Not being funny I'm a keeper, I've been in a lot of joint pain for the last couple years and been diagnosed with early onset arthritis... It's either find good supports or not play at all anymore... 😕
@@fplbreakfast6463 I'm a keeper too and I've got a tournament coming up. Do you think a wraparound and a knee cap underneath would be safe for me to play with? (had a ligament injury) Thanks.
1:58 "doesn't help your case"? pre-caution means you aren't injured and the chance of getting an injury is statistically much low with a preventive gear.
Personally as someone that's older, if my knees are bothering me, I'll wear kt tape to provide some support. For my ankles, I'll actually use a shin guard stay strap under my socks high on my ankles and I feel that helps.
Don’t agree with the first point about “weakness” at all when players like Cech wear a soft helmet, Luis Suarez wears wrist tape, and players with broken noses wear a special mask.
Adriankool4skool well yea no ones gonna target someone’s face or head and even if they do it’s a straight red but it’s much easier to get away with something like someone’s ankle or knee
Another advantage to taping is that it can be done to protect based on the specific injury. Pros have personal trainers and medical staff who know exactly how much tape to use, what angle to hold the joints at, where to reinforce and where to allow movement. There's no comparison in terms of performance and customization. Tape wins. The only disadvantages to tape are prep time (but these guys are in "game mode" all day anyway) and cost (but the team is paying for it). I've got footballer's ankle and I have to tape every game, but only a specific set of placements that prevents the foot from bending too far forward to where the impingement is. I've tried braces and they're not only bulky but they don't protect very well based on this exact injury.
@@NmmmMmmmmmmmmmmm I don’t have a video, but it’s basically: start with the ankle bent at 90° (like you’re standing) or a bit more (you’ll find what works). Wrap a few anchors (strips all the way around the foot and leg that the long tape strips can stick to), then three long strips from the base of the middle toe to a few inches under the knee, then two strips on top of those over the foot and up to the lower leg, to reinforce. After that, wrap single strips all the way around the foot (not tight - this is just to hold the long strips in place), around the ankle, and up the lower leg far enough to hold the long strips in place. When the taping is done, you should feel the tape preventing you from pointing your toe all the way (plantar flexion), and it should be strong enough not to pull loose when you shoot. I’ve taped more heavily than this in the past, depending on how the injury feels, but this is a nice minimum that still gives me full lateral movement in the ankle. Symptoms are basically pain in the ankle joint when shooting with your toes properly pointed and flexed, or pain when pointing the toes even when not shooting. It’s a chronic injury from years of shooting, basically. The ankles just take a beating over time, when the ball hits the foot and the ankle is at that angle.
Your main reason is not the main reason, but a bonus factor. Really tape is almost always better than a brace for support and it’s lower profile, so affects performance like kicking less.
Why don't professional soccer players use shin guards with ankle protection? They dont protect against a serious injury but they protect against painful tackles on the ankle. I find that I get tackled, stumped on and fouled more often on the ankle than on the shin.
I had to where a brace for 2 of my middle school games and three trainings for club and school and it sucked because if my school coach saw it he wouldn’t play me so not to risk anything so I put it under my socks and got my cleats on as quickly as possible
I’ll have to wear a knee brace every day, and it really sucks. I’m a 13 year old very active girl soccer player, and i have chondromalacia patella, jumper’s knee and i dislocated my patella 3 weeks ago. I’ll have to wear the brace not only at the field, but also at school and when i’m with my friends. I’m at the hospital 2-3 times a week to Physical Therapy, and she told me that i’m maybe on the operating table next year, because i’m too young now. I’m pretty nervous, because she is gonna talk with him next time he comes here (june 17) so i’m gonna get a real knee brace:/ and i maybe need surgery:/
@@bucket7496 i got a nerve blockage in may last year, and since then i haven’t felt anything to the pain:) it turns out i tore my ACL, LCL, MPFL and medial meniscus, but i did PT for 9 months, and i didn’t get surgery. so it’s fine now:)
Also another point would be, that if you are wearing an ankle brace you could possible be easier to dribble past even without a foul. That is simply because you don't have the flexibility and swiftness to your motion that you might need to stop an attack
I think they should upgrade the ag fields. If the fields are slightly damper and have less grip/shear, injuries would occur less. The thing is that the black rubber pellets are abundant, so it is unlikely that will happen anytime soon. At this point, I think it is best to cautious but not overly cautious to the point that it affects the psyche.

Does wearing a neoprene ankle sleeve affect shoe size? I'm pushing 40 now, and after several ankle sprains, I'm leaning towards relying on a brace to prevent further injury, but I worry about how a sleeve will affect the fit and snugness of the boot, and if I should increase the shoe size. I also have really wide (4e) feet.
I have been wondering about this question too, why those pro footballers not wear knee/ankle support at all, even after they just return from injuries. The only reason I can think of is they feel that those support will restrict the movements. But, I have been wearing knee support for years while playing and I will feel super uncomfortable if not wearing anything to protect my knees although my knees are not injured. But, when wearing the support, I also realise I can get cramps easily if I over stretch my feet when tackling. Is it really better for the leg not to wear any support if not injured? I am very curious. Anyone sports science personnel here who can provide some tips?
