  • Adam and Charlie vanished from the Auchnafree Estate in the Strathbraan area of Perthshire on the morning of 18th April 2019. The eagles’ satellite tags, which had been working perfectly well for one and two years respectively, suddenly and inexplicably stopped working (Charlie’s at 06.25hrs and Adam’s at 11.39hrs) just 3.4km apart. Both the tags and the eagles have since been untraceable.

If the footage could be collected (i.e. recorded live) when birds are illegally taken/shot/poisoned etc, could such footage then identify people/vehicles etc that are committing these crimes, often on grouse moors? I also understand that thousands of grouse are raised for the sport of shooting on these moors, has any major organisation (RSPB/BTO etc) ever undertaken a comprehensive study of how many grouse are actually lost through raptors taking these birds?

    Can some raptor expert tell me, it showed the eagles in the film at ground level eating what looked like a dead sheep and a dead deer how long would they normally feed for on the ground as it said in the film that it was unusual for them to be on the ground for six minutes in one spot,surely they would spend longer than that eating if undisturbed. Also would male eagles fight other eagles and other birds of prey over territory?

    Some wild claims about the reliability of satellite tags have been made by some here. Unfortunately, much deliberate misinformation has been spewed out by those with vested interests in shooting. One claim of low tag reliability used by apologists stemmed from a study of entirely different tags used on Olive Ridley Turtles in a far more hostile environment (i.e salt water). Hence caution should be used when quoting figures derived from pro-grouse shooting sources. The authoritative SNH report on the disappearance of Golden Eagles dismissed claims regarding low tag reliability. Exactly the same tags as those used on Hen Harriers in the UK are used with Montagu's Harrier in Holland where they have a far lower 'failure' rate of only 6%. The nature of the failure is also different on tags used elsewhere characteristically being indicated by intermittent signals then stopping unlike the sudden failure found in the UK - indicating tags have been interfered with. Corpses with transmitting tags are also found more often elsewhere unlike in the UK tags and bodies tend to vanish .... Hence two tag 'failures' hours apart in 'suspicious circumstances' (indicating a sudden cessation of signals) with no bodies located in an area with a documented history of illegal persecution is hugely suspicious.

      6% is higher than Thompson is making out!!! Failure rates have varied between 25 and 70% from the information that we have managed to find,one project in the Highlands had 3 failures out of 8 which is roughly 37.5%, these are from known projects. Fred the eagle was a complete fiasco,they knew the transmitter was failing by the signals it was sending and then trying to down load,they even knew where it was,Thompson never bothered to go out to find the bird,a bird being buffeted by a storm wasn't going to last long.time was limited to find the bird but he preferred his bed and went down in the morning to check in the office and then it started his cock and bull story.we don't know maybe he did go out and located the bird already dead and chucked him in the boot,why was a an eagle following the road for 2 days and then the tracker fired up again in the sea,it is all suspicious even more so by Thompsons story telling. the Bird was sheltering in trees beside a public park used by dog walkers and the general public,but nobody saw it? The whole fiasco stank,Thompson then said it must have been killed and moved by boat and dumped. who in their right mind was going out in a boat in a storm where all the boats were moored because of the severity of the storm. As far as i can see at the moment this is another Fred story.

      @TheNatureLover So what was the outcome? A complete tissue of lies based on little more than hatred of anyone with a bigger garden than himself or a bigger bank balance. Chris only cares about his ego and garnering adoration from those unable to think for themselves

    Like the others it will have nothing to do with humans. In the wild they have very very very little chance of "living a long life". The irony is the people that love these birds and keep them the most are the community you love to try to destroy.

    Only thing I can see as criminal activity here is people capturing the birds and attaching electronic devices and harnesses to them. The birds are in these areas because they eat grouse so obviously they’re going to be in those areas.

    • @scottfraz1487
      @scottfraz1487 4 года назад

      @TheNatureLover aye well I think that does more harm than good. It's not enough to assume that when these birds 'disappear' that the reason is criminal activity. It's not natural for these birds to wear tracking devices.
      I think it's more like the RSPB trying to justify their huge income from donations. Why don't they set up small cameras spanning the grouse moors etc, in stead of attaching trackers to the birds, they could work with the landowners on that and if there is any criminality it would be caught on camera. Problem solved.

    I see the way packer head is trying to push this .were veilcal's are able to get to think its possible these bird's are still alive and a profit has been made. The only link with the grouse moor is that it's diverse in life looked after .just check out a life of a grouse moor on RUclips. Life is abundant not just grouse

      @TheNatureLover the fires are controlled as for the traps you are reading to mutch proper gander. Game keeper genuine keepers are castodiens of the land an open mind is needed. Just look at a RUclips vid could a year in the life of a grouse moor

    Let's sum up the comments to save you going to the trouble of reading them all.
    I hate humans, i really hate people. It is all the fault of the Tories, they live in big castles and hate eagles and people like me.
    I hate Tories and seagulls, why is there so much hate in the world, why can't you all just be as kind, loving and cute as Chris Packham, eagles and me?

    I hope he apologises if these birds return as he has a approach of blaming others and when proved wrong never apologises.these birds fly off and die its nature.

    So Mr Packham, you're immediately blaming gamekeepers with no evidence whatsoever. You reckon it's highly unusual for an eagle to spend six minutes on the ground? So how long would the one that you showed feeding on the deer have been on the ground?
    Why not release all the data you have rather than the bits you choose?
    My suggestion is that you engineered this entire thing because you want grouse shooting banned along with all other fieldsports!
    Also, while I'm here, perhaps you'd like to explain why you're advertising Brittany Ferries on your website? They're not exactly good for the environment.
    And for the rest of you that blindly follow what Christopher and his friends have to say, why don't you have a look at The Langholm Project and the recommendations as a result of that study which are supported for the most part by the RSPB?
    Why not have a look on the GWCT website and find a bit more information for yourselves? After all, I'm sure you're all reasonable people who like to have an informed opinion.

      I have exactly the same opinion as you have about the "missing" golden eagles.
      The whole thing could possibly be a hoax to ban shooting on grouse moors.
      I don't like packham and think he should stay south of the border instead of him stickin his nose in up here.

    You ban grouse shooting and watch the bird numbers fall.and watch the feeding stations start popping up to prop them up,its all one sided arguments.

    • @happyharry8721
      @happyharry8721 4 года назад

      @TheNatureLover and you a counter excuse because really you know numbers would drop.question why do hen harriers breed with more success on grouse managed moors than RSPB managed land

    • @happyharry8721
      @happyharry8721 4 года назад

      @TheNatureLover you know the shooting fraternity undertake more real conservation work than the RSPB, and the RSPB just want the subsidies to pay off there pensions deficit.

    Ok devils advocate here.
    So, in the interest of transparency; I hunt; and yes, I enjoy it. As a rule, I eat what I shoot; other than corvids and the like.
    So... do some gamekeepers kill raptors... sadly, yes. We know this so let's not pretend otherwise. Are they in a minority, yes, most certainly. In the same, way as animal rights 'extreamists' are a minority; whilst most are simply people reasonable enough in their actions/protests.
    The problem I have here, is that these reports just don't hold together too well.
    You would need to be a really silly bastard to kill a raptor and remove its tag in a turning circle... and... what are the chances as shooting a raptor down, exactly over a turning circle in the first place?
    Likewise, it takes 30 seconds to chop off a leg/cut a tag and smash a transmitter with a hammer.... not six minutes!
    Secondly, the trackers are clever bits of kit and if they can show the bird was at ground level, then they would also be able to show a rapid decent... as in tumbling to earth having been shot down from 120 feet. If the monitors had evidence of the birds falling to earth, they would tell us surely?
    Yes... it is possible that these birds have been killed... but... it's also possible that they have been 'taken' / 'relocated' for the purpose of publicity and to aid the fight to ban driven shooting.
    Six minutes in a car parking area is about long enough to carefully de-tag a bird and get it into safe transport and away to be released elsewhere.
    I'm not saying this 'is' what has happened; I am just saying the scenario fits the circumstances every bit as well, (better maybe), as anything else.
    The problem is, (IMHO), vegans are a little extreme and some will go to rather extreme lengths to support their cause, and if 'taking' and 'relocating' a bird is a way to hit at the other side, then it's probably seen as a legitimate tactic.
    There is absolutely no excuse for killing a Golden Eagle and I truly doubt that an estate would support this. I doubt also that an estate would want the publicity of such an issue. Any estate proven to have done such a thing would likely find itself ruined.
    Shooting is a legitimate undertaking. I believe that everybody that eats meat should at some point, catch, kill and prepare an animal; if everybody did this, there would be far greater appreciation of meat as a food stuff and far less wastage.
    There are good and bad on both sides of this matter.
    As I say; I'm just playing devils advocate here and things just don't hold together as well as you would hope.

      Any competent ecologist knows that you can't relocate a golden eagle in the UK.ifthey were caught and relocated in the lake district (example) they would fly straight back up northwards almost immediately.
