  • At one university residency south of Paris, students are living among cockroaches, mould and in overall unhygienic conditions, despite studying at some of France's top universities. The CROUS of Versailles, a state-run agency, offers financial aid and affordable housing to students, but some of the accommodation it provides is barely fit for purpose.

This situation is unacceptable... especially from an educational institution that has the knowledge to know better.

Ventilation is crucial to avoid mold. That something many people fail to understand.

No matter, ventilation should be provided.

Most of the time, there IS a natural ventilating system but people always obstruct them because they say "it brings cold". As an architect working on renovating old buildings it really is painstaking to make people accept that you need to let air (and sometimes cold air) to come inside to lower hygrometry in the room so you can heat up back quickly (because dry air contains less energy so is easier to heat)...

In California, 1 small ROOM cost over $1,00+. Yes, one room!!!, not a studio. $300 is for a storage unit, just to keep stuffs, gate is locked after 10pm.

This is a disgrace. All the residents need to start a class action suit. The University should be advocating for their students. Hopefully this report will shame them into doing something.

Wow,this is such an eye-opener. Which top universities are these? Can't believe any prestigious British or American universities offering such substandard accommodation, although to be fair prestigious American and British universities are also better endowed than their EU counterparts with Cambridge University being the richest university in Europe and not surprisingly along with Oxford also have some of the best facilities including accommodation on offer.

Don’t worry, we have the same issue in the united states

      0) Letting people live in these conditions is clearly unacceptable in any circumstances
      1) A lot of these issues exist in US and UK
      2) This university is free to attend (like 300€/year), and most student who live in this kind of CROUS have scolarship and consequently are offered the fee anyway
      3) This building is the last to go in a series of renovations plan in the area so it's already being renovated this year
      4) Most of the time, scolarship students who live in these are offered the rent
Conclusion: people living there are very poor, everything is free for them (university, rent) and they are given a scolarship for their food and general living up to 300-500€/month, and finally the building will is being renovated now, and even if the rent go up, it will be paid by the CROUS for most of them.
