Stability of Cycloalkanes - Angle Strain

  • This organic chemistry video tutorial provides a basic introduction into the stability of cycloalkanes. Cyclopropane has the most angle strain and cyclohexane has zero ring strain. Cyclopropane and cyclobutane can undergo addition reactions such as hydrogenation. Cyclohexane has the lowest heat of combustion per CH2 group and cyclopropane has the most.

      The most stable is 6 membered ring then 5 membered then 7 membered then 4 mem. and 3 membered...

    Why can’t cyclobutane or cycloheptane also twist and turn to form chairs and boats like cyclohexane to relieve the ring strain??!!!

      cyclobutane is little twisted (not much)
      cyclopentane is envelop shaped

    In stability order Cyclo pentane should be more stabel than cyclo hexane since it has angle strain closer to the ideal angle .
