The preface to Germinie Lacerteux by Edmond and Jules De Goncourt

Published in volume in 1865, the work is the first French naturalist novel and its preface is considered the "manifesto" of this new literary current that identifies Gustave Flaubert as the father of Naturalism.
Apologizing to the readers for the absolute novelty of the subject, the authors analyze the events of the young Germinie Lacerteux, a maid who will fall ruinously into vice and despair.
