I could see that being used for special effects. With the proper background and high quality cameras you could pull off the illusion that it's actually flying through space. Would be cheaper and faster to produce for movies and television.
It's a beautiful model and it looks great, but I think by the time you'd overcome all of the issues of underwater filming in a tank you'd find it would have been cheaper and easier just to render the whole thing in a computer.
@ I've looked back through my comment, and nowhere can I see an intimation that we should ditch practical effects in favour of primitive CGI from the mid-nineties.
The most beautiful of the Enterprises. This would look REALLY Awesome if it was all lit up like the movie model and the pool was panted black with almost all of the lights off.

My favorite part is realizing that underwater, it moves and turns exactly the same way and speed as it does in the shows and movies.
This is awesome. The Enterprise's shape makes it impossible to build a flying model without making a lot of changes but in the water is another story
Gene Roddenberry originally based Star Trek on submarines. 😉
Cover the pool to black it out, add small underwater lights and voila! SPACE!
Good luck filming it then.

If you use the right high-intensity red LED's, you could get the phaser-visual effect where you see the beams cut through the water.
