We have these all over-the- place wherever they grow grapes and produce wine here in Switzerland. They are used primarily to help harvest and transport the grapes 🍇 from fields to pressing. Something bigger and more expensive would not work on the steep hills. They are low tech and easy for any simple mechanic to fix and maintain.
Wrong construction: The Engine-wagon must be the last wagon on the way up to the mountain. Why? When the fitting between two wagons break, ther is no running down the hill ;-)

Appears to be gripping the rail top and bottom. I'd think if you lean far enough to one side it would break, maybe even pop off the track.

I think they were made in Switzerland by a company called Habegger-Thun. As usual, that company is now part of a different company...
