    • @schul9169
      @schul9169 5 лет назад +399

      @nik Bahtin it's due to a decree by Archmage Tissasia, a very prominent figure in the wizarding world. She listed numerous occasions and examples of women who had magical talent but received no training in regards to it. This led to very damaging mental and physical effects on said woman, on top of which, they could pass to their own children, how ever they're conceived. She was very concerned with the chain of events that would transpire from these untrained women degenerating into insane shells who would then copulate and spread the problem further. As such, she stated that women must make a choice, "you must decide: to be a sorceress or a mother, you cannot be both." She would then request that all apprentices be sterilized without exception. This can be seen in "Blood of the Elves," page 225. Hope this answered your question! :)

    • @echo.1209
      @echo.1209 5 лет назад +54

      nik Bahtin I have only read The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny, and have only played The Witcher 3, but my take on this is that they might not know what they are getting themselves into? For example, Istredd says he was pouring over scrolls from a young age, training hard to become a sourcerer etc. so possibly sorceresses like Yen do the same. Maybe they accept the infertility at a time when they do not want children, but later in life some might yearn for it.
      Also, if you read The Last Wish, most sorceresses become sorceresses because of defects. For example, Geralt knew when he first saw Yen that she had a hunched back. Maybe because they weren’t loved before they “fixed” themselves that they never thought of the opportunity of children, but after “fixing” themselves they were loved and wanted children.

    • @echo.1209
      @echo.1209 5 лет назад +40

      nik Bahtin It’s said in The Last Wish that most become sorceresses because they are un-marryable, usually due to being ugly or some defect. Once they become sorceresses, they use their magic to fix themselves. In The Sword if Destiny, Dandelion comments on how even though Yen is quite old, her skin looks like a 16 year old’s from all the cream/ointment she applies or something along those lines

    In the books Yen wants to find a way to become a mother. If I remember correctly, it is revealed in the first book, 'The last wish'. This is why she loves Ciri so much later, because she is the daughter Yen can't have. In the games they don't share that close relationship (in the books Ciri called Yen her mother), so it's possible, that the in-game Yen still wants to have a child.

    • @joshuaevers9166

      @kirakovacs4877 5 лет назад +42

      Yes, they have close relationship both in the game and the books, but in the games Geralt is the only one who really act like Ciri was his daughter. As I recall, the only moment when Yen seems like Ciri's mother is the scene in Kaer Morhen, when she hugs her. Most of the time it's like they are only close friends. The game focuses Geralt's and Yen's, or Geralt's and Ciri's relationship instead. But I think this is not bad, as Ciri has grown up since they last met.

      @Kíra Kovács And in games Ciri's like.. huhh.. who are you? towards yen most of the time... And in books she announces that her name is Cirilla of Vengerberg daughter of Yennefer.. and to geralts frustration she never calls him father.. They completely ignored all of that to not to upset triss fans.. and also at the end of book Yen and Triss ends up becoming really good friends. again that got thrown out of windows at the very beginning of witcher game. Yen always considered Triss as a family not just a friend.

    • @kirakovacs4877
      @kirakovacs4877 5 лет назад +26

      @@gwynbleidd7935 Yes, the game forgot many things. For example in the books only a few people knew that Ciri is the daughter of Emhyr by blood. In the games everyone knew it. And there is no mention of the false Ciri. Also, according to the books, Voohris becomes emperor after Emhyr, so it's like a 'false ending' if Ciri becomes empress at the end of the game. And Geralt and Yen marry at the end of the books on the island where Ciri left them, so the Triss-love-storyline is also somewhat false. But I think we can forgive these mistakes, because this way the game is more interesting

      Maybe that's what it's based on - which would be a very nice nod - but: If you look around Skellige you can find several versions of this painting (tapestry?) in different houses etc and most have fire inside, making it much more obvious that it's supposed to be a dragon.
      I'm guessing they are depicting different kinds of Dragon and since not all Dragons in the Witcher Vers are said to have been breathing fire, the once without the flames are probably supposed to be one of those kinds. I have a screen shot which clearly shows what I mean, but unfortunately can't post it here. :/

    Yennefer's issue with the whole maternity thing, is actually a big theme in the saga. The games live a lot of hints about it, the books are a lot more explicit about it (of course).
    To stick with the game, though, you can clearly guess the game that she always wanted to have, and to be a lot of her.
    I always found a kind of funny that Ciri is a mixture of both Yennefer and Geralt traits, pishically and also temperamentally, it makes the relationship between the three more believable.

    You can find that mother & child tapestry in pretty much every Skelligan home. I think there were even some in Kaer Trolde. It most likely has something to do with Freya. Since Yen was staying in a Skelligan tavern, I imagine the tavern owner hung the tapestry there, kind of like how every American hotel has a bible in the nightstand. I do think it has at least some relation to motherhood though, since one of Freya's three forms is a pregnant woman.

    Yennefer wanting children is an underlying theme of her character in the books. Her first appearance is a short story of her trying to catch a Djinn precisely as in those hints in the game. Also what she does for Ciri and Geralt is essentially her being the protective mother of her adoptive daughter. Regardless of her being with Geralt at the time or not, she endures a year of imprisonment and torture for Ciri after Geralt essentially badgered her into taking her in as a ward to learn magic. By comparison Triss is just the young aunt who may care for Ciri like a sister, but does not do anything selfless like that to protect her. She usually takes the convenient way out to defer to more powerful sorceresses counsel.
    Arguably the main theme of the entire fantasy series is about dysfunctional people seeking comfort and love for each other.

    I know you said you aren't going to dive into the books, but considering such a big part of this video is you wondering if Yen wants a child of her own, I feel obliged to answer. The answer is crystal clear in the books. Yes, Yen does want to have a child of her own. Not only that, but she wants a child with Geralt, specifically. It seems like fate double-crosses her, because not only is
    she, herself, incapable of having children because of the use of magic(or maybe because some sorceresses get sterilized as part of becoming sorceresses), but Geralt is also infertile, like all the other witchers. At various parts, both Yen and Geralt wonder, how it would've been, if they met and they were both normally fertile and what kind of life they could have together.
    In the Sword of Destiny book, she and Geralt also speak to a golden dragon, Villentretenmerth, that they help save from a group of soldiers, dragon slayers, magicians, etc. I think the story goes so: Villentretenmerth is a golden dragon and is also incapable of having children(maybe because he was the last golden dragon and there were no other golden dragons left for him to reproduce with, or maybe golden dragons just can't reproduce). He defends a dragoness with a baby and I think that that baby dragon isn't his. It later turns out that that baby dragon grows up to be Saesenthesis/Saskia(from The Witcher 2) and that she got the ability to turn from a human to dragon from her father, Villentretenmerth, but not completely, because Villentretenmerth can turn into anything, but he did, besides dragons, love humans the most and turned into a human most often, so that's the trait Saskia/Saesenthesis inherits/learns/gets from him. ANYWAYS, this suggests to me either that the baby dragon was still, in fact, his biological daughter, or that in the Witcher world, certain traits can transfer to children non-genetically, if the bond is a genuine parent-child bond. Well, Villentretenmerth says in the Sword of Destiny, that he sees that baby dragon as his continuation...that, even though he can't biologically have kids, this baby dragon will be his legacy and continuation of his spirit, so basically still his real, own child. And that HEAVILY foreshadows Ciri. Remember, she hasn't yet been mentioned in the books by this time, if I remember correctly. But the exact same thing happens with Ciri, Geralt and Yen, as does with Villentretenmerth and Saskia/Saesenthesis. Ciri is meant to be Geralt's destiny...she is bound to him by the law of surprise TWICE. And Yen's fate is bound to Geralt's fate as per his last wish to the Djinn from the book The Last Wish(with that last wish, he saves Yen, but also makes both of them fall in unbreakable love with each other). So basically, Geralt, Yen and Ciri are a destiny and fate bound family. Ciri even looks like she was Geralt's child. And she forms a genuine mother-daughter bond with Yen. Yen sees Ciri as her own child. That's why she's so protective, but also, why she's so rude and inconsiderate to others in certain cases, in The Witcher 3. It's literally her child, that's being chased by the whole world of kings, emperors and a transdimensional demon army. I wouldn't have time to be excessively polite to random people either, if my daughter was in such danger and time was running out. Ciri is Geralt and Yen's continuation and legacy. Like Saskia/Saesenthesis is Villentretenmerth's continuation and legacy. A real, true child of theirs in every way but genetics. Yen might still want more children, though. But that excerpt from that book that you mention in secret #2 is literally, word for word, taken from the book Blood of Elves, which is used to explain that Yen is infertile and how that's the biggest tragedy of Yen's life.

    When she arrives in White Orchard outside the inn, there will be a shot of Geralt sniffing intercut between shots of Yennefer's outfit and the back of her head.
    Why is the sniffing important?
    BECAUSE HE'S SMELLING HER PERFUME OF LILAC AND GOOSEBERRIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Yen has expressed regret over being infertile a few times in the books, thus why she’s so protective of Ciri. Much like how Geralt treats Ciri as his daughter, Yen acts like her mother.
    It’s why I prefer Yen over Triss. Yen just wants what’s best for Ciri, but Triss wants best for the Lodge and the Lodge wants to use Ciri as a tool (this personality trait of Triss has been omitted sadly by CDPR, preventing such conflict of interests in the games).

      When I got my hand on the books that wasn't that obvious (i was a kid that time) but with time passing and FINALLY having time to play Witcher 3 years later, I'd say it's hard to say no to Triss but Yen is the right choice. Why? Because Triss is that pretty simple girl you fall in love the first time. A bit unresposible, still got that inner child in her, seems like fun. Yennefer on the other side is probably one of the few (or maybe even the only one) that fully understands Geralt and you know damn good from the start that's gonna make a fine relationship.

      To be fair for Triss (in the books) in the end she doesn't really put the Lodge's interests above everything else (it should be noted though that she wouldn't be able to change the course of Lodge's actions, since she would remain in a minority, Philipa remains among the most influential of them and basically those few sorceresses who are 'important' enough do what they please) and actually from the start she is conflicted about the Lodge's plans of using Ciri, in fact in later books she hides in the temple of Melitele in Ellander and avoids other members of the lodge for a while. Triss is also a bit idealistic, she has good intentions for the betterment of the world and sees the Lodge as a way to 'improve' the world (of course her idealism clashes with reality), Triss is one of the younger sorceresses and in books we see her moments of weakness and fear.

    On my very first playthrough I thought Yen was harsh with Skall so I did the dialogue that showed concern for him and was blown away by her response, amazing writing.
    Yes absolutely Yen does want a child. On the PC version if you import a save from Witcher 2 having done the quest in Flotsom where you have to drink a mysterious potion from 2 scientists you can find a note outside Oxenfort Academy. The note says that the potion he took was experimental to counteract Witcher sterility and it appears to be successful. So there's hope for Yen and Geralt to be parents.
    Yen upgrading from just black and white, good for her.
    Love that you could ask Yen, Triss and Ciri about the scar but bizarre none seem that concerned despite knowing it might be seriously dark magic. Then again it's Geralt and he always survives.

But we all know (or at least to those who have read the books) how hard and dangerous it is to acquire one. I think Yen thought over on what wish she has to make, to be able to conceive or to know what's really in between her and Geralt. And as seen in the game, we know which one weighs more to her based on the wish she asked the genie to grant.

    The poisoned source probably pertains to Yennefers' mentor, the obsessive compulsive Tissaia Devries, who suggested that sorceresses should be sterile since kids borne by them inherited their magic and ends up mentally deranged. Women can either be sorceresses or mothers, but not both. And Yennefer, bemoaning the fact that she cannot bear children has tried ways to reverse that process, such as attempting to kill Villentretenmerth, but eventually helped him fight the Barefield folks.

    Here is my input on the dresses that appear in the house of Geralt. I believe there is kinda hint that depends on who ends up with Geralt, that the color of dress changes to fit the other lady (Triss has purple dress, which is very related to Yen's style (eyes and lilac perfume), While Yen is suggested green... which is kinda Triss type of colors (eyes and her clothes style) ). About the christian-icon-shaped tapestry in Yenn's room: the same pattern can be found in several other places around Skellige, sometimes looking a little different, but the ones that are the most "legible" show that it is, in fact, the stylized neck and head of a dragon or sea serpent. Some show its fully drawn/carved head breathing fire, for example on one of the buildings of the ruined houses on the shoes of the small lake where you (might) end up having to choose killing or not killing for the guy who helps you out of Lugos' jail, AKA possibly "the rarest quest". Also, its rather peculiar shape comes from the fact that it's, originally at least, a longship's headpiece pattern. So I guess the ressemblance with a christian icon is not intended here, as it clearly is a typical Norse element. :)

      @@xLetalis It's written by Tissaia de Vries (Geralt says it in the dialog), the OCD sorceress that trained Yenefer. It was mentioned she was always very hard on Yen, and forced her to suppress her desires for a family harshly. She killed herself shortly before Ciri blew up that tower in the books. She was a minor character but I remember she was really interesting to me, because of the way OCD was portrayed.

    On number 5, great pick up by your daughter. I've never noticed/paid attention to that tapestry on the wall, but there's really a connection between it and those Mary and Jesus paintings. But in this same video (I haven't checked in the game itself yet) you can notice the same tapestry in the common hall of the inn she's staying, so I wouldn't say it's a Yennefer thing, but some Skellige art.

      In the first short story book there’s actually a hilarious letter Yen writes to Geralt
      It’s after Geralt and Yen broke up for the first time, and Geralt was wondering how to start his letter to her so to be safe he started with “Dear Friend”, and in her reply Yennefer mocks him by including the phrase “your dear friend” at nearly every sentence (I was glad you were able to contact me, your dear friend, because we are friends etc)

    Hi there! I've actually read the books and can help with the infertility bit. Yennefer's entire quest is to become fertile again and have a child. She states very openly in the books that she wants one, but is incapable of it. She envies mothers able to have children and is incredibly depressed because she can't have any of her own. This is why she clings so dearly to Ciri, because Ciri is the closest thing she's ever going to have to a child. She goes through many, many trials in the book to try and remedy her infertility issue, but none work and any that promise it cost so dearly it's intimidating.

    the thing that looks like an icon depicting the godmather is actually a snake, it can be found all across skellige, in each village, it happends that in the interiors it doesn't have a tongue, but on the outside, when it's carvings on the wood, I guess, it's complete with all the details and it's clear as day that it's a snake, not some sort of a hint to the orthodoxy

She desires to be a mum more than anything, and in some way she is looking that to happen, but she is sterile and Geralt as well... the only way that she discovers to be a mum is with Ciri, she adopted Ciri when she was 11-12 years old and treated and loved her as her own daughter.
