It’s meant to replace the brushed model. Also gives you better driveshafts than the vxl model, and the vxl is a bit underwhelming with the 3500kv motor, so most people end up upgrading the vxl and ultimate models to a bigger motor and esc anyway.
Still a fine car for beginners but if the cdn price comes in as expected (almost $500) that price tag is harsh for essentially a disposable 2S system replacing a disposable brushed system... Traxxas doing Traxxas, upgrade as little as you can and charge as much as you can... The Rally based on the LCG chassis is better value at below $400 IMO And yeah, that plastic drive shaft will take plenty of abuse... especially at 30mph
Remember you also have $120 XHD kit and the brushless ready ring and pinion. The rally you have to change the ring and pinion not to mention the other things needed to convert it to a proper off roader

I don't know if it was this video or the other, but you mentioned the ESC wires being proprietary. They're either an MT30 or MT60.
What are you using to get the speed? Cool video, might have to get this for the wife.
