A personal experience we recently had when we adopted our Igor in December: We were told by the shelter that he would not eat wet food. So we bought the dry food they said he preferred with the idea that we would work on transitioning him to wet then eventually to raw. He refused it. Literally would not eat even 1 kibble. Bought him Nulo wet and he ate like a champ. 😊 Next step raw! So thankful for your videos. Fed our previous cats dry and regret it. Didn't know any better, but we will do better for this little boy.

Very interesting information. I was looking to buy cat food today and going through the ingredients; they do make it tough going as they don't list in a good format, all lumped into a single paragraph (obfuscation?). Cassia gum...what on earth is that? Well, I looked into it and really not that impressed tbh. Y'know what it's like, I ended up researching other ingredients used in pet foods 😱 I came across your website, so now I feel more informed, but also aghast at what I used to feed my other cats. I always fed them Iams dry food, that was supposedly the best stuff and continued doing it for 30 years, not realising that it was really not good for them. I was so ignorant, but I know what to steer clear of now, at least. I have 2 new kitties that will eat much healthier foods. Thankyou so much.

These companies tried to sell this type of food to humans too. They made these overly sugary cereals and added a bunch of vitamins after, and tried to convince us that was the best thing to feed our children. I think most people have wised up and know this is not healthy as a consistent meal for their kids.
Like you said, kibble is basically the equivalent of sugary cereal for pets (and is made by the same companies).
Thanks so much for your videos. I knew I wanted to feed my cat the best food I can afford, but it’s very hard to find good info.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on fiber. My cat is overweight (she has a neurological issue that makes her less active), and my vet recommend a high fiber, high protein diet. But fiber is a type of carbohydrate. Are there any supplements you’d recommend to increase fiber, or is added fiber even something you’d recommend?

  • @michaelward9880

If money wasn't an issue we would feed our cats raw meats. Period. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to feed our boys the "premium" canned cat food. We compromise and feed them a well known canned food brand that used a big ginger cat as it's spokescat in the 1970's.

Since I completely eliminated dry food from Sumo’s diet, although I can’t afford top-shelf wet food, I’m mindful about the ingredients and she’s already leaner, much fitter, more agile and more playful as well as her fur improved, too, it’s shinier, softer and less hair is falling. I’m in the U.K. and I’m woefully ignorant about what is and isn’t allowed in cat food here. I don't expect there’s much difference between here and America. My cats are on a fresh food diet with all the necessary nutrients and no added cereal etc. I get it delivered once a month, portion controlled for my cats each having one packet a day, which are much bigger than the individual sachets you get from supermarkets. I get mine from a company called KatKin and the only downside is the need for freezer space. I also have plenty of cat grass around.
My wife and I are disabled and this is also a very disability friendly way of feeding cats where our disabilities are concerned. Raw food would probably be too much for us.
You didn’t mention litter! If you have house cats fresh food makes a phenomenal difference to the odour around litter, it’s really extreme. I thought initially it would be just faeces but in my case it also seems to affect urine. I have a couple of fountains that they are well aware of, even so there’s far less urine in their litter boxes. My boys are both neutered which eliminates the "Tom" odour but fresh food seems to eliminate a lot of the remaining smell.

  • @sarah430

I’m a proponent of raw feeding for cats - I feed my kitties commercial frozen raw and the occasional wet can. But once I bought some higher quality kibble to help lure one of my rescues inside after she got out. Then I gave them the leftover kibble as a treat. They went crazy for it! I wonder why that is..any idea why some cats love kibble so much, especially when they are used to wet and raw?

    • @jesscaticles
      @jesscaticles  2 года назад +3

Many kibble companies use flavor enhancers called palatants to make the food more enticing to eat. Since cats are not grain and carb eaters by choice. And cats often get addicted to these things.

So when the ingredients say specific meat meals like “Duck meal, turkey meal, chicken meal ect” is that still 4D rendered meat?? Or is it just when it says generic “meat meal or poultry meal, fish meal ect”? I can’t find a single dry food that doesn’t contain some kind of meat meal ingredient! Even the really expensive ones on your best dry food lists have ingredients like Chicken meal, turkey meal, Duck meal ect. Even the “clean protein one still has ingredients that end in “meal” so I’m confused! I need to find my cats a new dry food, their’s has been discontinued 😢
By the way…My cats do get mostly wet food, a can 3x a day to share, but When my cats wet food became unavailable for like 6 months this year we were forced to give them more dry food b/c one has bad IBS and finding a food he can tolerate is extremely difficult and he was already doing good on the one dry food we had to give them as a snack in between wet food, and it’s all we had till we could find a new safe wet food. During that time my other cat got really addicted to the dry food and I’m still struggling to get him back on mostly wet food. But I need to find a new dry food that’s safe for both of them as a snack and for emergency back up but everything has different kinds of meat meals, also natural flavors which I’ve also heard you say is bad I think. Please help!! Is Duck meal & turkey meal safe?? I don’t want to give my cats 4 D rendered meats!!

My cats absolutely loved Stella/Chewy wet foods, and that was almost all they ate. I kept dry food out as an option, but they kept their attention on the wet. In the blink of an eye, they have now turned their attention to the S/C dry food, and they'll eat a little wet food. :( I still put the wet food out for them everyday, but so much was getting wasted. The chicken shreds, for example - they would lick the gravy out but leave the shreds. Can after can got tossed. I'll be returning all the shreds this week and picking up the morsels and pate only moving forward.
But I don't know how to change their new obsession. I've spent so much time researching foods that I was driving myself insane. One of my cats even stopped eating altogether and had to be hospitalized. He's better now, and I'm just thankful to see him eating, even if it's dry food.
I'd appreciate any suggestions, as I feel like I've exhausted everything I can think to do.

I understand your concern, however, bacteria risk is possible in all types of foods. Plus, a fresh food diet will warrant a healthier animal and therefore antibiotics probably won't be necessary. What about the risks of using antibiotics themselves?

Because of her I had to research cat food brands and after finding all of this out, I switched all of my cats. They now eat Feline naturals, Ziwi peak, Stella & chewy, Rawz, Fussie cat, and meat mates (they’re a bunch of Fussie buttheads that all like different things) I spend about $400 a month on food but at least I feel good about what my cats are eating. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That’s what really matters in this house: the cats and are they eating a proper cat diet.

@T R it is cheaper. That manx I mentioned is on a homemade diet where I buy the lamb parts from hare today online and every 3 or 4 weeks I make cat food for her food intolerant digestive system. It is much cheaper than the canned food brands I mentioned and her poo is finally solid. I do still mix half Ziwi or feline naturals but that’s because I’m not good at making homemade cat food yet. We’re getting there, it’s a process.

I was wondering if you could do a video on a wet food "routine" for your cats. I have a 6 month old kitten and she's been on dry food since she could eat dry food and now I am getting a lot more interested in the more wet/hydrated food diet. However she is used to grazing on dry food throughout the day and when I try to feed her wet foods at mealtimes only, she doesn't finish the whole thing because she is used to small, frequent meals- this means i have to throw away the remainder because we can't just leave wet food out for her to eat all day of course. I was wondering how you recommend getting them used to mealtime only diets, and how you recommend managing this for a growing kitten whose owner has a busy schedule and can't always be home to prepare her wet meals mid-day (I work 12 hour shifts some days). I guess I am just trying to figure out how to do this wet food thing and getting her to eat only at mealtimes so that I don't have to throw wet food away that she doesn't eat, while at the same time making sure she gets enough nutrition, while at the same time making sure she has access to food frequently enough throughout the day for a growing kitten. Sorry for the long comment I just have been trying to find a solution for this and haven't been able to find a clear solution. Thank you for making this content!

You're very welcome! Regardless of what you feed, just keep in mind it's not sanitary to leave food out all day (grazing on kibble). I know it's tough when you work. We have automatic feeders that have ice packs that we use when I go into the office. We feed a meal in the morning (7:30), and then the feeder goes off at their normal dinner time (4pm). You could do that and feed before you go to bed too to keep the number of feedings higher. I think Jess has videos about the transition between types of food, and to go slowly (don’t fully cut off the dry food at first). It will probably take a while for her to get used to meals, but we love it!

Thank you for your kind words! So a big myth is that kibble cleans teeth because it's crunchy. But that would be like our dentist telling us to use crunchy granola to keep our teeth clean. Since your baby is still very young, I'd suggest introducing teeth brushing now. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be! You can even use sterile gauze wrapped on your finger.
Cats require even more water when fed dry food only. So using dry food as a way to drink more water doesn't work. Cats get dehydrated from dry food only because they already do not have a high thirst drive. It is better for cats to get their moisture (aka water) from food.

After some research i settled on "porta 21feline finest". it has 86% meat. it has some drawbacks. poops are a bit more smelly but most importantly it takes a while before the cat is used to it. where it generally takes 2 weeks or so to switch, in this case it took me more than 2 months to have them switched. i theorize it is a very heavy kibble, so if they eat too much too quickly, they vomit. i have remarked that they consume much less of it, yet they prefer it over other kibble when offred side by side.

Hey Jess and Jericho. I love the information you share on cats. I believe you provide just that information and people can and should decide for themselves what's best for their cat (s). Can you share with me wet food that's organic and I'm not concerned with cost, just my cats overall health. He has never eaten raw, nor do I think I can handle that either honestly. I value your suggestions. Patti;)

Thank you for your kind words! You're absolutely right - every cat parent should do the research and make the decision. Organic wet food is a great video idea! I'll get working on that one for next month (:

I'd love to see a vid done on proper wet food portions for cats, cuz the lables say x per pound and I am staring at my big boy who is 21lbs of cat going 'wait, what?!'. Cuz I look at these 12oz cans that I wanna buy, but I have three cats and 24 only lasts less than 2 weeks and these are 35$+ a pop. Like, I need better measurements so I can give them what they need without spending a ton of money cuz I am over feeding their portions.

The amount of food to feed is dependent on the cat and the food. Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/9Av8we7Bm-k/видео.html&t

    Hello Jess!
Started my transition to raw for kiddo, I’m starting with “instinct raw” caged free chicken bites, would like your opinion couple things please as I am fully committed to channel your information and ebook! Your review on this brand and product? & what I can add to those bites ?
(Might switch as they don’t have many varieties of the raw bites trying to find the ones
They have now and can’t seem too) looking for something similar like raw bites or so before Moving onto ground meats.. what would you recommend.?
    TIA 😊

Check out my cat food reviews in this video: ruclips.net/video/eRtL3GGa4as/видео.html&t - the list is in the description, 100+ records of all types of food. There are freeze dried options as well as ground raw when you're ready. Variety is key so I always suggest using a few different brands and not relying on just one. Just focus on one change at a time. The description of this video has other helpful videos about transitioning etc.

I live in Europe and I really struggle to find good cat food brands. I mosty buy Feringa and Animonda wet cat food. But I don’t know they are good enough.
