Hi Jonathan....I get what you are saying man!!!! Looking back, let's say the mid 1970s...here in San Diego California, there are a lot of major hotels here and I did a lot of private parties there. We would bring our gear in and play these gigs and get $50.00 for a 3 or 4 hour job, and the people that hired us were pissed off because of what we charged. What these people DO NOT see are the hundreds of hours of practice you put in to get to that level, the cost of buying and maintaining your instrument, the cost of reliable transportation, and band outfits like a tux, etc. Because the level and type of work I did required that type of appearance....well I know you get it. But all these people see is magically you are on the band stand playing. Just before I had to retire from playing drums, when you had finished playing a hotel gig and leaving, you had to pay $12.00 parking fee....no comping because you were in the band...they did not care. This was a nice video Jonathan, and I encourage everyone to go back and check out ALL your videos going back 7 years...by the way...your Samba video...wow...really got the feeling going! As always...my best wishes!!!

Thanks a million, Bruce. It's great to get some feedback on this video! I was hoping for a few people to chime in and share their stories/perspectives. Musicians try to put on a brave face over here, but I know what's going on. If you do your accounts properly, with travel, fuel and expenses, over here, a fair decent paying gig ends up being less than minimum wage. Not always but too often. People more than ever, really just want the pop/charts repertoire. Those are all the requests they'll make. Jazz is basically a dirty word in Australia. People will actually kind of, not like you if you're into it. It's very alien to an Australian audience and mostly considered 'elitist.' Which is weird because I'd rather watch elite athletes over amateur ones and Aussies love sport. I've got to work on my presentation. I'm a bit dry and have a nuanced sense of humor. I can come across a bit arrogant or something. However, in the spirit of Jazz and improvised music, I just hit record and start going. No edits. Thanks again for commenting on this one. I enjoyed your short story and I'll bet there's plenty more! Cheers Bruce!

While I can relate to certain extent, I think we all choose our blind spots. How many times did I went to the museum last year? Zero. That right there would be a sacrigele in the eye of a sculptor. And Im fine with it. Im fine with 40 year old women listening to BS pop. I dont care really. But I hear what youre saying. Happy holidays!

Hey thanks! Julian. I respect your perspective. I do feel that for some reason with music, it's different. I don't know what I don't know and I know what I don't know. I accept I don't go to the museum and have no real knowledge of sculpting. All I can do is like a sculpture. If a skilled artist were to school me on why the said sculpture is not very good, as in the proportions are out, the materials are cheap, the lines are bad or whatever, I would happily accept it and be open to understanding more about sculpture. Possibly have a new found appreciation of what a sculpture does and knows. I'm glad you've chimed with a bit of polite push back. It's most welcome. I'm trying to "lightin' up" a bit on these videos Hahaha. Happy Holidays to you too. Cheers!
