2:20 - the Targaryens were not the only surviving Valyrians. They were the only surviving dragonlords. The dragonlords were a small fraction of the Valyrian race as a whole
mrlopez2681 there were a few surviving dragonlords after the doom, Aurion crowned himself the emperor of Valyria in Qohor during a visit after the news of the doom.He perished in Valyria trying to re-establish it.Not sure but even some were on

I had read it in a magazine years ago. That was the only reference I could dig up without looking very hard.
In the books our group end up in the Rhoyne and not Valyria. Old Valyria is supposed to be still a volcanic hell hole. It's supposed to be haunted by demons and boiling seas.
In the books, I think there were two other Valyrian families who joined the Targaryen families to colonize the islands of the Narrow Sea in Westeros; House Celtigar of Claw Isle and House Velaryon of Driftmark. Also, Daeny's handmaiden Doreah was described as having "fair hair" like the Valyrians.
Fair hair is just blonde or red hair, the valyrians have silver/gold hair.
Doreah was from Lys, is one of the free cities where fair skinned and platinum blonde hair people resides it is said that when a Targaryen can't find a suitable bride or groom they will marry someone from Lys.
the blood of Old Valyria still runs strong in the Lyseni, who are regarded as beautiful. Even the smallfolk in Lys have the coloring of the dragonlords of old: pale skin, silver-gold hair, and purple, lilac, and pale blue eyes.
-ASOIAF wiki
there some families in Lys and Voliantis that have Valyrains ancestors.
In the book that George RR Martin wrote about the history of the world shows that the majority of the Free cities were small outposts of the Freehold, so basically they will be ancestors of the dragonlords
I saw it brought up in the comments a few times and wanted to clarify something, the Targaryens where the only family of Dragon Lords who survived the Great Doom. In A World of Ice and Fire it's mentioned how strong Valyrian blood is in places like Lys, Elyria, and Volantis. The Volantenes especially remember and embrace their Valyrian heritage. The Velaryons are another currently surviving Valyrian family though they were never Dragon Lords. It's also highly likely that Aegon, the Mummer's Dragon, is just a Lysene or Volantene that the Golden Company picked and raised to be a ruler, since they possess Blackfyre all they needed was a passable Targaryen.
So while the Doom of Valyria wiped out most of the Dragon Lords and shattered the hold Valyria had over their empire Valyrian blood is still plentiful, especially in the southern free cities.
Actually there was Higher houses and lower houses in Valyria. And the Targaryen's were frowned upon for leaving Valyria to settle Dragon stone. They were not even considered to be an important family in Valyria.
I love watching these older videos guessing how things will turn out after I've seen how they DO turn out. No one expected Sam to get involved, no one guessed that.
If Westeros is like Britain in the middle ages, I guess Valyria is the equivalent of the old Roman empire.
that's what GRRM said. and the mysterious city of Yi Ti in the east represents asia.
Gerard Jagroo or even better like india or chinese . remember Rome was nothing in front of India .there were 32 cities in India which was bigger and better than Rome .
read book named indica by megasthanese one of ambassador sent to India by Alexander successor . always till 18th century from last 5000 year india has 40% of global gdp while chinese had 35% Rome was not even 10% at its peak .
Valyria could best be compared to Rome as they started from a small civilization and conquered their known world, and possibly to China as China did expand outwards and had a great empire, but I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that the Indians did not expand out of India to form an empire the same way the Valyrians expanded from their native mountains or Rome from Italy.
Do you know of any occasion when India formed expanded out of the sub-continent?
ayush kumar indian empires were nothing against the great chinese empires of han and qin of the same roman era !! Chinese empires were way too civilized and had largest armies in the world u can just read about it in wiki "Who built the great wall "
And the Dothrakis are the mongols
Targaryens are not the only Valyrians who survived, the Celtigar's and Valeryon's are also from Valyria
monkey8panda Yeah I hate that even the show kind of forgets that. Though Targaryens were the only Dragonlords who survived. There were Valyrian families who didn't have dragons. The Velaryons and Celtigars aren't Dragonlords. The only time any Velaryon got a dragon was because they intermarried frequently with Targaryens.
@@ditach3693
They were the majority of dragon lords to survive - there was another dragon lord who was in Qohor at the time of the Doom. When he heard of the Doom, he assembled a host of 30,000 men and his dragon and marched to the shattered Valyria to crown himself King. However, when he reached the middle of Valyria to establish himself, every single one of his soldiers vanished, including himself and his dragon, vanished without a trace. So I guess the Targaryens really were the only dragonlords to survive.
Lone Harpy, you have skipped the aspect of magic in the story of Valyria. The rule of the Valyrians, the control of Dragons, the manufacture of Valerian steel, all of these things involve magic. The absence of magic and the downfall of dragons and the almost-extermination of the last Valyrians - the Targaryens - is an important plot element, and the eventual conclusion of the story will likely involve some resolution or return to magical balance in the world of Game of Thrones.
The Targaryens aren't the last Valyrians, you're forgetting about the Velaryons who still currently reside in Driftmark and were Bannermen to the Targaryens
Esdras Tautu - You're right, of course, but the Sea-Lord family isn't known for such obviously Valyrian activities as practicing magic(like Brynden Rivers) or Dragon-keeping. I'm fixating on magic, our Harpy friend obviously omitted mention of it in this video, to build another video around. Good Catch, though.
See my theory: The lightbringer was used as origin to the dragons to be used as defense to the humans, the valiryans used them in the wrong way and that is why they were destroyed, but to maintain the dragons the targaryens were allowed to survive. Now they are weaken, and that's way the winter is coming
Varys is a valerian
Lightbringer, not Stormbringer (snark at you who don't get that without a Google search.)

The glass candles!! Quaithe mentioned the glass candles are burning again and there is one at the citadel. They were used by Valyrians to communicate and I'm very interested to find out what this will mean going forward
What if the Dragon egg Euron threw away becomes a sea dragon. Maybe... like a Leviathan
Melissa Bay it would be interesting, but it need blood and fire to become alive... but we don't know how many fights it have been on the sea. And many deaths and maybe fires can have happened that, maybe can awake the dragon
Melissa Bay nah I bet jon will find it and that will be his dragon
There are actual Leviathans in asoiaf. Look it up
It could be true....
Dragons are wyrms that were magically combined with wyverns and the volcanoes of valyria..
So.... What if the wizard combined the egg with water or ice magic?
Very very unlikely. A dragon egg underwater is nearly impossible to hatch and even if it would by a big coincidence land on an undersea volcano which could regenerate enough heat to hatch it, it would still drown upon hatching. I mean just because the egg has been underwater for a while it won't change the whole biological structure of a dragon.
Not to mention that this whole story is probably just Euron bullshiting like he tends to do a lot.
I've never thought that Valyria would serve any real importance in the present story but I would love if Gerion Lannister, the real hide and go seek champion of House Lannister (Not you Tyrek!) reappeared having successfully found Brightroar. I doubt it would happen in the show but I have a glimmer of hope of it happening in the books since he's mentioned in every single one.
the book-fans has a theory that Euron didn't really made it to Valyria instead he just hi-jacked a ship that came from Valyria and took the treasures it carried. and that maybe it was Gerion's ship he hi-jacked... sold the surviving crew to slavery or made them part of his crew of mutes.
They talk of the Doom of Valyria, and how it was a volcanic eruption that wiped out the Valyrians and their dragons...but as Danerys said herself, "Fire cannot kill a dragon"
Daenerys was the only one who was impervious to fire.
We cannot give you back your homes ... Or restore your dead to life. But wecan give you justice in the name of our king!
I watch these videos just to hear the intro. :)
ZinaD lmaooo really?
Yup, I do.
We cannot give you back your homes or restore your dental life. But we can give you justice in the name of our King.
Could you discuss the similarities between Tyrion and Tywin. And how at the battle of the blackwater when Cersei was telling the kid the story it kept flashing to tyrion. The story was about a little lion having all the "animals" bow to him, i think this is foreshadowing that tyrion will be the king in the end
also in one of Jon's first chapters in A Game of Thrones when Tyrion is walking away after talking to Jon it says something like Tyrion's shadow looked as tall as a king so I reckon he will be the king in the end
He will become king then be killed when a chandelier falls on him during his coronation :)
in the books during the siege of Riverrun an aunt of Jaime was telling him about Tywin. At the end of the story she said that Tywin had one son that truelly resembled Tywin and Jaime was honered. Only then did she tell him that it was not Jaime who looked much more like his uncles. It was Tyrion who more than any of the other children had Tywin traits in him, something that Tywin always tried to flee away from
Atheist Toast - was that when she had shut herself in with Tommen, and she was about to use the Tears of Lys to poison both of them, so that they would not be tortured and killed when Stannis's men came in? In fact it was Tywin who opened the doors - she dropped the bottle of poison, and then realised that what she had feared wasn't going to happen.
+NoneOfYour Beeswax undoubtedly? I thought that was just a theory.
I am still thinking about Quaithe's prophecy to Dany, to go west you must go east. Even in the shows where she was already in Westeros. I think she would go back to the east especially in Ashai or Valyria. There maybe sleeping dragons there that need awakening to help the war against the Long Night.
Maybe, Danearys' baby the witch delivered is still alive? She said it was like a lizard, and had wings of a bat. Sounds like a dragon to me. Not only that, he would be the prince who would rule the world. Just a thought about what Euron was looking at after shooting down Rheagal. Possibility?
There's a Horcrux hiding somewhere in there.
Valerian steal is steal combined with dragon glass
The Cynic yes,but melted by dragon fire
Lyanna will mean-mug his greyscale away.
Glad to see someone share my thoughts on what might happen with jorah down the road. I think that exploring the ruins of valyria would be a good route to go with his plot line
That's funny, just had some storms knock my power out as well. I live in southern Ontario. My internet and phone line are actually still down, so I had to watch this video at work. Great video, keep up the great work. I love seeing your channel grow.
At the same time, he should find a magic that restores Varys' privates, gives Tyrion an extra two feet of height, and makes Ser Brianne beautiful. And they all lived happily ever after.
Brienne is beautifull in her own way.
Hey don't leave out my man Grey Worm and Jaime gets his hand back too. Jon finally knows something and then they live happily ever after 😂😂😂
Don't be a white knight. You exactly what he means. Briene is unattractive compared almost every main female in the show
after GOT ends, a tv series about old valyria or targaryen would be sick
The Dragon Lords are alive and awaiting to return back to the world of men. The "doom" of Valyria was just a ruse to make the world think they were gone. But Valyria is still alive, protected by magic, and why people who go there, never come back. The long night is coming, and its not just the white walkers that are coming back to the world, but it will also see the return of the Dragon Lords.
i would really like to see that theory happen ! :D
Lol put back on your tin foiled hat mate

This comment reminded me of eragon
Can't be because one of the targaryens (don't remember which one) often went there alone and even sleeping in the ruins of the great hall. he must of found out at least something.
Hey Harpy. Something that has been bothering me, Ser Arthur Dayne, was he some sort of prophet. His last words to Ned were " I wish you good fortune in the wars to come ". He was saying Ned was going to survive that day and live on to the next wars where his entire family is almost wiped out. What do you think.
You mentioned that the Targaryens were the only family to survive the doom and this isn't true. There were several families allied to the Targaryens that came directly from Valyria. The only reason why the Targaryens ruled was that they were more powerful and had dragons. One of the other families that came to Westeros that I can remember was the Velaryons. There are many people with dragonblood in them, noble or otherwise, within the series so that would suggest there were many, many families.
Yesss. I checked like 4 times throughout the day for a new vid from you... you are awesome. Been there since the first vid... def consider doing a live "Q&A / DISCUSSION" I think you will get alot of viewers
👍
hey last harpy, I watch tons and tons of GOT fan theory videos and yours are great! very comprehensive and the way you explain things are very clear and interesting! Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching more of your videos bud
Remember when Melisandra said that when dragon's fire burns, shadows get darker? Well, maybe that's what's hiding there- shadow demons.
But, I'd like to see the Seven Kingdoms kind of draw in The Army of Dead in Valyria simply cause there are volcano's and only fire really kills the dead. Plus, if there are shadow demons, like I said before, White Walkers are screwed.
I always thought (from reading the books) that old valyria was a lot farther away from essos. like way more south. looked a bit too approachable in the show to me.
I think Sam will find something in the citadel that will point to Valeriya.
FYI - 1. the Valyrian civilisation seems much like the roman empire, which also was run from a southern peninsula off a large continent like as on the g.o.t map.
2. I also noticed that the house Targaren storyline seems much like when the romans settled in Britain an took it over for a few centuries as also like in this story.
Valyria is like doing a 60-80 man raid where you get the best items for your wizard :o
Harpy, I'd just like to add to the greyscale back story..it is said that greyscale originated from a curse by PrinceGarin against valyrian forces who defeated & destroyed his kingdom along the Rhoyne. He prayed to MotherRhoyne to avenge her children and a thick fog carrying the disease covered the ruined city and that branch of the rhoyne. Infecting and killing the conquering valyrians... I assume some of those leftover valyrians from the Rhoyne made their way back home, but the valyrians discovered the cure, so the disease didn't spread at that time.- Because this is a high fantasy story, maybe greyscale is really a disease with a magical origin, hence can only be cured by magic. Magic that only valyrians know of. Show-Quaithe was really just telling Jorah that the cure is a valyrian-knowledge. But he doesn't really need to go to Valyria to gain that knowledge.. the book series mentions a learned person & some books that have valyrian knowledge.. some books are said to be kept hidden in the Citadel.
Book Spoiler ahead...
It's also interesting that JonConnington (Aegon&his crew) wasn't used in the show, yet his storyline was given to Jorah Mormont. For me (asoiaf fan as well), that means JonCon's storyline is necessary to the end game.Book-Quaithe made a cryptic warning to Dany in Mereen, that didn't make it to the show.. part of it is about the plague in Mereen and some other plague that will come after it.. I think for the book, a greyscale epidemic in westeros could be foreshadowed by this. But the show doesn't have enough time to include that, so Quaithe's character was altered in the show.
For the show, I have a feeling that the valyrian-knowledge to cure this disease will lead to some other more important valyrian-knowledge needed in the story (AzorAhai / PTWP/Valyrian Steel/DragonMagic).. I wouldn't be surprised if these informations (along with the cure) are all included inside one particular book mentioned in the bookseries written before the Doom of Valyria.
Anyone notice that the buildings in old Valyria seem to be made of concrete similar to that seen in roman ruins?
yes it is based off roman empire
this makes a lot of sense, maybe Jorah will go to old Valyria to die and like, discover a bunch of VS weapons and arms or a horde of dragon eggs and the secret to hatching and taming them. i would love to see a proper horde of dragons and riders.
I figured Valyria HAD to contain something important for the story's progression as I read the books, in the parts where sailors spoke of Valyria with fear and anger. Almost all sailors are very afraid to approach Valyria while on their usual routes on the sea. They say that anyone who even sees the Valyrian coast line is doomed to die an awful death.
Probably by breathing in volcanic ash
I really hope that Jorah Mormont travels the Valyria, and uncovers the ancient tomb of the assassinated meme king, Dat Boi first of his name, King of 4Chan
Do you think Arya will kill Little Finger ? I just stumbled across that thought while scrolling through the Internet and I was curious what you might think :p

Something interesting is that: in the first book , in the chapter tyrrion this going to the wall , before talking to Jon Snow ... He read a text about the properties of the bone dragon ... It made me believe q vallirian steel is made of bone dragon using the dragon fire to forge
Well .. jorah did find the cure and died protecting Dany
You know what is funny with all the dragon pics shown in these vids....they are apparantly Wyverns.
I SUSPECT THAT THE INHABITANTS ARE MORE ORGANIZED THAN WE know and could be guarding Valarian magic
Hi Harpy, I watched many of your videos before as a way to get more opinions on some of the topics in the show but not my main source. But since you mentioned an interest in Valyria (something no youtuber ever says), you hit a sweet spot of me and gained a subscriber. I love lost civilizations (including fictional ones) and its fascinating to know other people do too. Cheers!
Heya. Just wanted to ask what program do you use to edit videos? I like the fonts like when it says "Spoilers".
I think there are dragon egg's and valerian steel there
What if Greyscale protects you from being turned into a wight.
We should all call Jorah Ser Crusty now… OR… The Crusty Bear!
Maybe Gendry will play a role in developing Valyrian steel as he is a talented blacksmith and a Baratheon who will probably end up back in the story.
So close to 75k Subscribers congrats I love your thoughts on the theories.

Well maybe in the shadow lands beyond ashai there are many dragons and they don't have a mother(dany) to lead them to westeros I'm just saying maybe 🙂

Stannis will return mark my words
The director confirmed his death, he only cut off the final swing because he felt it wouldnt fit in or something like that.
Oh, like they confirmed Jon Snows death? When will people learn? We only know for sure when the story ends, or a dead body is shown and burned or something.
njoYYY This time I don't think he's lying though, I was excited for all of season 6 waiting for Stannis to return and at this point I dont see any way/reason for him to return.
What are the chances of him returning? Does Brienne swing the sword then stop, and help him up?

SPOILER ALERT FOR SEASON 7:
so as we now know, sam is curing jorah of greyscale. what if greyscale is like chicken pox, where you can't get it twice? jorah could explore valyria and find (probably/hopefully) the secret for making valyrian steel or at least a bunch of weapons made from it.
Or maybe bran will have a vision back in time and see how to make it!
@@azorahai772 Seeing how there's only 6 episodes this will probably more likely happen.
@@Cwhirt910 I have a theory that it requires dragon fire to forge it, which would explain why the Valeyrians all had it, and no one could duplicate the process. Dragons were much more common back then, after all.
@@natedaniels3655 I agree it has something to do with dragons, probably their fire and maybe their scales.
I think Jorah Mormont will go to Old Town.
Nice channel mate. Simple discussion and I'm learning a lot of new stuff. Thanks. Glad your channel isn't annoying and just trying to promote yourself. Keep up the good work.
I would love them to explore more of Valyria and the birth of the dragons also more about the white walkers.

There could be anything in old Valeria. From a single blade, to an entire armory of weapons and armor. It would be cool to see Jon and Dany wearing Valerian armor astride dragons. Giving reference and homage to their roots. Both being the last surviving Targaryens.
I feel like the stone men and the others are some sort of Fiery / Icy counterparts of one another; one being related to the dragons in Valyria and the other to the white walkers. Just because of that, I feel like Valyria has an important role to play in the climax of the story. It also makes sense for GRRM to keep some important details under-explained, just to prevent theory-crafters from being able to get it completely right :P
valyria probs represents ancient greece.
roman empire
CHIEF 1101 - a combination of Rome and Atlantis
Hopefully a presidential candidate will emerge from old Valyria that is worth voting for.
Amazing!! Like all of your videos, this one is so interesting and very well put together!!
Why doesn't Dany have her dragons work with some blacksmiths? They might be able to replicate Valyrian steel or something akin to it; maybe a lesser variant. It just seems like something I would immediately look to doing if I had some dragons. Like I know Valyrian steel is special since it's limited, but, hey the Others are kind of a big thing. Might want to have more than just some dragon glass and 1-2 swords that can do damage to them.
My money is on the fact that Jorah has grayscale, the Stone men will not attack him and he will travel around Valyria and find as many weapons, armor, shields, equipment all made of Valyrian steel.

Fun new theory. Jorah, failing his mission comes back to the north to meet up with Dany, Jon, Lyana M, or some subset. Asks for a merciful death, or is caught back without his pardon known to the Starks or his his niece.. and the weapon used to kill him becomes lightbringer.
I'd have a similar thought about LB with Jon accidentally killing Arya in using someone elses face, or maybe purposefully having to kill her because she's out of control.
Either of these could be part of the "bitter sweet" ending that has been mentioned.
Hey Harpy, have you done anything covering the theory to do with the Iron Bank and how they got so rich? I always thought it was a bit odd how they amassed so much wealth whilst being supposedly "hidden" from the rest of the world when Braavos was first established, did they use magic to turn iron into gold?
What if he finds out that Donald trump is a turkey
Trump is gonna make Westeros great again.
The immigration act will stop the white walkers from coming.
Both of those theories at the end sound super exciting
Dude I am so interested in the history of Valyria I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope that it plays a part in season 8 for some reason or another
I've been wondering if there might be a large stockpile of Valerian steel still there and all that needs to be done is reworking it like they did with Ice
Dark souls style game where you play as Jorah mormont exploring Valyria
I think Gendry is Robert and Cersi first born son mentioned on season 1 I think Arya has figured this out which is why she continued to try to protect him. The song Gendry hums is the same song Cersi Huns to tommon during the show she almost poisoned Tomnon. He said it was the song his mother sang to him and that is all he remembers of her. The are hints and references to this throughout the show.
MAN YOU HAVE BEEN FIRING OUT VIDEO'S. ........AWESOME JOB
I read a theory that Brightroar - the Lannister valyrian steel sword, is in old Valyria. It was reputedly taken by king Tommen 11, who left it there. Apparently Tywin's brother, Gerion, set sail to find the sword, but came back empty handed. Foreigners are not allowed inside the walls of Valyria, except by invitation, and they must be able to trace their blood back to old Valyria. It is unclear whether Brightroar is actually in Valyria, or has sunk to the bottom of the Smoking Sea.
That's a really cool theory about Jorah the Explorah earning that title by exploring Valyria! Also (spoilers WOW preview chapters), Euron's Valyrian armor is now confirmed! Euron got even cooler in the Forsaken chapter.
Maybe there're few more Dragon Eggs including giant sleeping/chained hidden Dragons like Balerion!
Prophecy says so, "When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone".
If Azor Ahai is yet to be exposed then obviously there're few more unseen Dragons including Three Heads Red Dragon and Ice Dragon (it's maybe somewhere in icy place) which are probably sleeping for long time and chained in some cave of some abandoned hidden place!
I also see the correlation between 'Red Star' and 'Three Heads Dragon'!
🤔🤔🤔🔥🐉🐲💥❄️
I love how they show a little of Valeria. Also love how they just dump the freaks there
when jorah and Tyrion were sailing into valyria the dragon they saw. fly off in the distance. do you think it was deaneryes dragon drogo or that it was a unknown wild dragon? could it be they never really went extinct there and somehow survived the doom?
I wonder if Genntry would be involved with the forging of any wepons needed in defeating the enemies of Danerys?
In book 5 its the ruined abandoned cities along the rhoyne river not vallyria , as no one has ever crossed the smouldering sea surrounding vallryia and returned home alive to tell the tale. Tyrion is traveling in a large yacht down river not a rowboat, Jorah and Tyrion did not cross paths yet. Tyrion's traveling companions were Lord Griff Connington and a young man whom Tyrion later discovers to be the still living grown up Prince Aegon Targaryen, whom Tyrion believed was.
I think it is possible the secret to reforging is there...and Gendry will be the one who can make it.
Wouldn't it be sweet if Jorah DID explore the ruins of old Valyria? It would be amazing whilst there he stumbles upon a room littered with skeletons, where it looks to be a final stand took place, he walks further into the room, he notices that some of the soldier's armour are decorated in fine red cloaks and as he comes to the center of the room, he notices one skeleton, who's armour is more identifiable than the rest due to the huge lion on the chest piece & next to it, what looks like a Valyrian steel blade with a lion's head as a pommel..
