John Cale was writing this song while Lou Reed was moving more towards conventional pop songs with Stephanie Says (good song, don't get me wrong). I believe both of them almost made it onto White Light/White Heat and perfectly demonstrate the directions they were both pulling in.
I kinda agree. The Doors, or Morrison (Jim), had to really work to shock and disturb and as much as i like their music it's also kind of self-conscious. The VU shocked and disturbed by just doing what they felt like doing, it's more artlessly artful. Just my opinion too.
