I should do more rereads again...so many classics have been 'spoiled' in a way by school really. It wasn't until I did my thesis on literature education for children, I realized what devastating effects the ways our schools are treating literature has. I remember I sort of liked Animal Farm when I was sixteen, so that's certainly up for a reread. Absolutely love A Farewell to Arms as well, as do I love Maya Angelou. Some great books there!

You should definitely read some of kafkas short stories!! My favourite short story by kafka is the hunger artist but it would be interesting to hear what short story you like most!
The Game of Tomes is my classics reading goal for the year and it’s been very helpful so far. I also was blown away by A Farewell to Arms and could barely get through David Copperfield. I loved a Christmas Carol and Great Expectations, so it’s not just disliking Dickens. Hemingway packs a punch though that is very impactful for me. It seems many people have a strong preference for one or the other of those writing styles (Hemingway vs Dickens or Steinbeck). I’m in the Hemingway camp.

I had a very similar experience with Catcher in the Rye in that I didn’t like it at all in high school but we just reread it in our book club a few months ago and I thought it was great! The catcher in the rye was SO GOODD i read it like 3-4 times growing up and did my junior thesis on it. Like even when i read it when i was 5 i loved it (though tbh i didnt reaaally understand it until my second read-through much later)

Very nice to see "Silas Marner" and "Of Mice and Men" on your list. I always thought Silas Marner didn't get the credit it deserved. I read it at school over 50 years ago and it really got me into reading, which if nothing else has cost me a fortune over the years. Stay well and enjoy your reading.
If you struggled with David Copperfield I can very much recommend the Audible (UK) version which is read by the actor Martin Jarvis. A long listen but the superb narration brings the characters to life and helps you through the slower paced sections.
How interesting to see this. And to then try to exercise. My 1) is David Copperfield. I absolutely loved it and it’s my favourite of his. 2) Little Women 3) Brothers Karamazov 4) 1984 5) The Idiot 6) Once there was a war 7)Farewell to arms 8) Catcher in the rye . Ohh! I read Sleepy Hollow with my three older children and it probably goes at the number 7 spot. Also reading House of Dies Drear to them and if there is a number ten spot, it’ll be that one 😅
Carolyn, what is the next Dickens novel. Animal Farm not on my list, really dislike the novel. Hemingway would be the first on my list of these books. Prince Caspian, David Copperfield and Peter Pan would be with Hemingway. The others I can't judge as I haven't read them all. To these classics I would add Little Women and Anne of Green Gables, my list would also include The Forsyte Saga, Barchester Towers (Trollope), and probably Bleak House (Dickens) or Little Dorrit, which I loved, also a Dickens.
Peter Pan is my favorite book of all time. It’s so complicated and unhinged and bittersweet. Every time I read it, I pull out something new. The more I learn about the time era, the more I can see it’s influence on the process of the story. My obsession for it changes as I age. Peter Pan is a character that I hate to love, and love to hate. Penguin has an amazing forward/introduction about Barrie’s life and how it may have influenced the story, which makes it even more precious and heartbreaking. The early 2000s adaptation does a fair job at capturing its charm and savageness. It is a bizarre and wonderful tale. I love that there are parts of it that can’t be reasoned with.

I think you are suffering from a case of Dickensitis. You have read too many Dickens novels on a too short period of time. If you had not read all his previous work before, do you think you would love David Copperfield more?

Ranking is very difficult. Seriously, how do you honestly compare a children's nighttime bed story (Peter Pan) to a scathing social commentary (Animal Farm)? Two totally different audiences and goals... (to steal an analogy) like judging a fish on how well it climbs a tree. Other Booktubers use a tier-ranking system, which I think is a better representation when comparing different styles of books. With 5 tiers, I would put Animal Farm and Kafka in my In my topmost tier,. I would put Catcher in the bottommost tier and Dickens in the tier just above that. The rest would be middle tier, with none in the second-highest tier. I have read 7 of those books. Unread books. I find reading CS Lewis like teething on aluminum foil; way, too Christian preachy for me. I have read 7 Steinbeck and never heard of the one you chose, so I find it curious that you called it a classic (classic author, but not a classic book). I have never read Passoa. You really need to read The Count of Monte Cristo, and then East of Eden or The Grapes of Wrath.
