Roll your guitars volume down to just before it goes silent. You can get some really cool less aggressive tones that way without having to adjust your amps settings
my favorite method is make a tight fist, pinch the pick between the pad of yout thumb and the outside of your index finger, adjust the saddle hieght AND position of your low string so that they are setup correctly (tighten if sharp then raise if sharp, keep an all-strings curve or radius if it can be helped. this setup will last for months) and then try messing with the tone and volume knobs. If you have a tweeter, but your gain sounds great? roll back the tone. have a djent guitar but no bark? volume knob. still no bark? turn up the amp gain, lower the amp volume, put two distortions back to back at low gain. i personally use a palisades and a dreamcrusher from EQD, but you can do a BOSS Blues Breaker into anything to, first, mimic the palisades, and achieve a tight, full bodied distortion sound
Excellent EQ tip !! I always use both the Hi AND Low Filter for a situation like this . And then possibly make the Bass and the Drums wait to kick in on the 4th beat . But I have no doubt you already know this and you were probably using this Technique way before me . Stay safe , Dude ! 🎸
When you play it an octave higher you should reverse the order of the notes, like a temporal reversal of the riff and then switch from 4/4 in the higher octave to 7/4 in the lower octave Now, you're djenting. :P
Bro I saw this and tried it the day after on my guitar and came up with a riff in like 2 minutes, sent to my band mates and no shit they said "yo that's djent as fuck"😂
Something I do when I make riffs is not only do I play a ton of riffs until I find one I like, sometimes I do a divebomb or a big slide just so I can have a weird noise introducing the riff 😂
A good one tbh but I think that was like really obvious. Apart from what he had said you can also make it faster. But I really prefer chords and arpegios to prepare the listener for the chord change and be abel to do crazy time signatures and really fast melpdys and that will not be oberwhelming the listener. But also if the part should be on clean than I try to make something active in that chord change refering to polyphia. Yea and second guitar can help a lot via playing the chords and the melody will be played an octave higher and even if its really shreddy the whole emotion is very easy to understand for the listener
Dropping your tuning doesn’t increase your access to notes. It just moves what you can play. Only dropping the E string makes that difference on any amount of strings.
Drop Ab/A flat is the same as Drop G#. I'm just leaving this here for the uninformed and the noobs. I've been playing guitar for 15 years and just found this out last year while getting into music theory.
Icarus Died.
Exactly what came to mind
By who? I can’t find this song
@@awgeezslick8802 the comment was a point out to the song in the video being similar to "Icarus Lives" by Periphery
Was gonna make some kinda icarus joke but then I saw you already had
Hey man, your are great but this is Icarus!?!?
Congrats. You made the Kirkland version of Icarus Lives.
Kirkland is good though
Dont you ever disrepect kirkland kettle chips.
so accurate
@@llObscurelldon't imply disrespect, man. we all love kirkland here
Kirkland is great though...
that's PERFECT, i have this riff and i feel like it needs an intro and bro you just gave THE PERFECT advice, BLESS
im so glad this came up on my recommended. i was wondering how i could recreate that effect but all i had to do was drop the gain
A nice split coil or single coil pickup kills it too!

Ivw been watching 👀 i liike what you show. Cool, thanks👍
This is an effective technique for any genre. Play the riff higher up, and then drop it down an octave. Boom. Instant power.
Absolutely Beautiful guitar.
Also consider applying a high pass filter for the intro, it really creates that big contrast when you drop octaves and the bass comes in

what bass?

Dispossession by Northlane is the song that made me learn this.
That’s such a Jim Root guitar tone, I fvcking love it
It’s the mark holcomb signature
Wow, an informative guitar video that is actually applicable! Good job buddy! 😎
Goddam is that heavy. I love your videos, thank you.
Dude, that was sick. Thanks for the ideas
Bro I saw this and tried it the day after on my guitar and came up with a riff in like 2 minutes, sent to my band mates and no shit they said "yo that's djent as fuck"😂
Got my sub🤘
Strong Korn vibes!
Genius
Your guitar collection 😲
Happy New Years
You sir are a djentleman for giving us a nice tip.
Loving korns new djent album :)
Funnily enough i’ve just learnt ‘Dancers to a Discordant System’ and this is the exact technique Meshuggah uses!!
It's almost like they're the OG Godfathers to the "Djent" wave.
@@soysauce9296 Almost just exactly that
That was the first thing i thought of, but then when the riff came in it sounded more like Icarus Lives by Periphery
Damn I felt that in my heart!
I’m glad virtually every human being in these comments agreed this sounds like Icarus lives 😂😂
I had that's actually a legit music tip I first learned it from watching Leo
Ah yes the good old octave trick ❤
Sounds awesome
I don’t know about the whole djent thing but I think you just made a song for Korn without knowing!
Hahahaha aye sounds like 🌽
was gonna say that lol. could definitely be something from their first album.
Oh fk yeah my dude let's go
Literally every periphery song
Really? What else besides Icarus Lives?
Not
Listens to Icarus Lives once, and claims to "know" Periphery.
Whew, I thought you were going to steal this idea I was going to use for a song I was working on, that was a close one.
Ah shit, here we go. Went from 100-1000 in like 2 weeks. Love your videos my guy
Holy... I was kinda already doing this sometimes. Good idea.
The kick drum sounds like a COD hitmarker
Grooooovy
That first tone is wild bro💀
Something I do when I make riffs is not only do I play a ton of riffs until I find one I like, sometimes I do a divebomb or a big slide just so I can have a weird noise introducing the riff 😂
Bruh I almost thought that was a Korn riff with that bass and drum tone ngl
It djents

This James Hetfield mustache rocks!
Reminds me SO MUCH like icarus lives
I feel like icarus lives became a rick roll of djent
Ab is the tuning i like to use on my 7 string too
Honestly reminds me of dead bodies everywhere by korn
Thanks man it’s all jen
I like when they put a crisp airy tone on the higher octave into for a nice am radio sorta feel
Dime started this with cowboys from hell riff.
I feel like that was more thrash than anything, ThraD'jent
old trick, goes back to punk era
Reminds me of the way Pollution by Limp Bizkit is set up on 3$ Bill Y'All
This was a great tip. Any chance you’ll do a video with the Jake Bowen guitar next?
Basically what Periphery did for Icarus Lives
You can have the same effect slightly muting your top string if you have a 6 string
sounds killer
I knew I was playing country wrong.
Dropping your tuning doesn’t increase your access to notes. It just moves what you can play. Only dropping the E string makes that difference on any amount of strings.
Or B
Gracias bro, I ain’t even think about octaves changes a string down 💀
My guy wrote aldi’s own brand version of icarus lives.
I have the same guitar haha I Drop G though
I like making an ambient background a dissonance but my riffs are usually just 0 and 1’s.. how do I make good riffs with notes- what scales do I use?
Is there a thing as funky Degent?
... the sun destroyed icuras' wings this time 😢
What are you dropped down a half step from?
Similar to Tonga by Jason Richardson
Sir that's P L A G I A R I S M
Gene Wilder is just staring at me. I'm terrified

Darn straight!
How is that thing for sound? prs is a great company but ive never heard or tried their 7 string
HAHAHA! That's not djent.. That's new metal lol.. And that snare is great!
Sounds a tiny bit like if Korn and periphery had a baby
Icarus when he had flown too far from the sun
Wasn't Mastadon the OG Djent?
So Shogun by Trivium is Djent?
let's what see what you got ,,don't hold back °•°• ● slayer ●
Noice
I mean you gotta play a Periphery-like riff, if you’re using a Mark Holcomb PRS right !😂
Is that the DW signature model?
Mark Holcomb sig
Dude, your setup sounds so much like Slipknot. What do you use?
Can someone explain to me how that Riff "can't" be introduced at any standard tune?
My wife told me to buy the more expensive guitar the other day and I didn't buy anything.
I'm stupid.
F💔
My wife is protective of my Strandberg and likes when I bring it on vacations and trips.
Am I the only one who thought this riff sounded like the intro song to MXC?
When did breaking benjamin change their name to Gent?
icarus lives but watered down?
Fuuuuuuuuuck yes
If slipknot wrote Icarus Lives
Boutique metal
Lmao I djent on my broken, mangled Frankenstein’s monster Stratocaster
That sounded very Nu-metal to me. I like it.
I was thinking the same thing.
djent sounds like the nu metal i was doing 25 years ago
Daedalus Lives!
The drop ?
Was that from djoom: eternal? Lol
Icarus!!!
I don’t know why, but it sounds as a Korn riff
4 string cigar box player here, I’ll show myself the door.. just joking..
