Were you able to verify the varieties were correct? I am very wary of ordering from sites like Etsy and eBay due to the extremely high percentage of fakes sold. The amount of fakes in the cutting world is extreme, so I try to only buy from known sellers.

Thanks for another great video. I always like to put an arrow for growth direction on my cuttings. Although it's not as important with figs because you can look at them to figure out growth direction. I like to keep in the habit; it's good practice. I think you should have told people that the nodes should be above the old leaf location. That way people don't plant them in upside down.
If it helps you, I say do it. Never change the things that make you successful. Make sure the buds face UP. However, sometimes, the cuttings don’t have buds! It isn’t always easy to notice.
I have bought a rooted Smith and a Col de Dame Blanc cutting from you before. That CdDB cutting is the beastliest of my three. Thank you for the excellent cutting!!! Even got a few figs off of it the first year.

When the tree is dormant. This year since they are taking forever to go dormant I took them already. I have watched videos where it's ok to do that also. Some sap will come out. That is why it's recommended to do it when it's dormant.

Great information video 😊 I'd forgotten I'd taken cuttinh in the Spring here in the UK, then wrapped them in damp paper towel and placed in an open plastic bag and forgot about them until now (mid summer!) Whoops. Three long cuttings still look viable out of the ones I'd placed away in a dark area, sheltered outside. It might be the wrong time of year to start, but I like a challenge and hopefully a few months left of warm sunny weather (UK... If we're lucky! Ha). The cuttings in your video are thinner than the majority of the subject branch. Will I be able to get cuttings from the entire lignated (sp?), almost 5 foot length or will rooting the thickest part be problematic?

If your fig has rooted and is ready for up-potting before your last chance of frost, there is a good chance it will fruit the same year. About 2/3 of my trees fruit same year. However, you will need: 1. LOTS of warmth. If you live in a northern climate, the season may not be long enough. 2. You need to fertilize aggressively. I do not graft figs, and I'll tell you why. Figs are very cold sensitive for being deciduous trees, and they have a tendency to die back to the roots if they're caught off-guard with a sudden plunge in temperatures. If you graft your fig trees and they die back to the ground, you will lose everything but the rootstock. I *strongly* recommend you plant all your trees on their own roots, because if the tree ever dies to the ground, gets attached by an animal, or you have to cut it down for whatever reason, the correct variety grows back from its roots.
Just up the coast in Hatteras, NC on the Outer Banks! I have 8’ tall by 10’ wide tree that needs some serious pruning and trimming. I am going to have so many cuttings I won’t even know what to do with, haha. Can I propagate large cuttings with a diameter of 2-4inches?What is the longest cutting you can propagate?
speaking of cuttings, I got some i 258 cuttings. I immersed them with IBA and NAA solution before propagation. After a month of my waiting, four of those cuttings sprouted roots.
If you watch it back he is pulling an infomercial move by not using the shears correctly. It's not obscenely blatant, but he cuts using the middle/front half of the shears. Anyone that has even used a pair of scissors knows you use the back half closer to the handle for a much more clean cut. He does stuff like this in alot of his videos honestly. I still enjoy watching them, but it always gives me a little chuckle.
I do not remove anything, normally. However, I also rarely take cuttings leafing out. I wrapped that top in Parafilm to preserve it. We are getting smacked with several hard freezes, so all that new growth is toast, now.

It is best to place them in a rooting medium ASAP. The fresher they are, the better. If you must store them, you should put them in 1 gallon freezer bags and store them in the vegetable crisper in your fridge. Yes, you can take as many cuttings as you want from a tree as long as they are sized appropriately as shown in this video. Being very inexperienced I have not pruned my fig tree (in a container). I live in Massachusetts and brought it inside beginning of October i believe. The tree went dormant. Since then There is a good amount of new growth and about 8 nearly full size figs. Is it ok to prune now? When should I? Thanks!
Truly, I do not know. It depends on the weather and my workload in January. It is incredibly time consuming to do so, like a 100 hour commitment to do it all. If I am able to do so, I will announce it.
Yes, that is a good option for Ohio because it is quick to ripen. Any Mt. Etna type (Chicago Hardy, Marseilles Black VS, Sao Miguel Roxo, etc.) will do well in Ohio thanks to their short hang time.

Thinner than a pencil and new green wood and it didn’t survive transit. I’ve been watching your videos and found some cuttings on figbid and have successful rooted them! Figbid is probably the best place online to get cuttings and rooted cuttings consistently. The overwhelming majority of sellers are legitimate, and the owner is *merciless* with scammers and bad sellers, so they are very few and far between (unlike eBay and Etsy, where scammers are the norm). If a seller on Figbid is well-reviewed, you can almost guarantee you'll get a good product. I just started to populate my page last night, so I am going to make the announcement tomorrow.

Interesting point with the saw. Have you done similar with blueberry hardwood cuttings during the winter? I’ve heard hardwood yields better success. Also, do you rub the leaf buds off that go underground?
I generally try to if the node space accommodates. Sometimes, the node spacing at the top cannot accommodate this. This is common with “tip” cuttings. Cuttings further down make it easier.
Try rooting that cutting right now, I've found that if you take a cutting and root it as soon as the buds break in spring they just take off. It's like the cuttings are supercharged and root like crazy.
Sometimes they do. It went right into a pot with some mix. It does seem that cuttings taken from trees deeper into dormancy seem to take longer to root.
I'm not sure what you mean. Center of what? Did you prune your fig trees prior to storage, and where you made the cut, you're seeing a hole in the center of the freshly pruned wood?

I have not announced the cutting sale yet. I just got back from a vacation today. I will have info within the next week. We just got bombed by several hard freezes, so I need to check that everything is fine beforehand.
What time of year is best to take cuttings? Should the tree/wood be dormant....let's say anywhere between December-February.....or is that ABSOLUTELY the wrong time. If the wood leaks out that white, latex sap is that too early? I see his cuttings look "green" but not sappy. Also, I seem to think starting cuttings in the late fall would be better but can we begin rooting in mid-late winter...???.....(I'm giving that a shot. We'll see if it works).
You should get a plastic shoe box( 6qt sterilite) for each one of your fig trees(or just the main ones). Label them and that way when you cut the tree you can have them organized easier. I use a big pair of loppers when I prune. And clean with alcohol spray between each tree.
I have 6 young trees in pots that are about 1.5 yrs old that are in my garage in a cart and i just realized they are all infested with ants. It must have been from when i had the pots sitting on the grass in my backyard for a few weeks during the fall. Any tips on how to best get rid of these ants? Thanks and great video.

@@TheMillennialGardener so I got some of this stuff. Do I just sprinkle it into each pot and let it be? The instructions seem specific to mounds of ants. I don’t see any mounding in these pots. I believe they’re 3 gallons. But when I shake the pots a bit, they all start moving around. I’m just afraid they’re gonna destroy all of the roots I worked so hard for.
What do you think of very thin cuttings? Are they viable? I just unpacked some and they are thinner than a pencil. Don’t know if I should waste my time on these.
Thin cuttings are outstanding for grafting. If you don’t graft and you want to root, wrap them in Parafilm, or they likely will dry out before rooting. If you wrap them in Parafilm, they should hold up. Thin cuttings often root faster than thick cuttings.
You took those cuttings before the new growth gets frozen/killed by the next frost. Wise decision. Still a long way to spring. Hope you dont get hit by a late frost like in April 2021. Good Luck from Austria.
Oddly enough I guess I've had less trouble actually rooting figs as I do getting them to grow once they do leaf out. I move them to a pretty sunny window (temp average 75-80) and LIGHTLY fertilize with liquid fertilizer and water roughly twice a week but the growth seems almost be stalled or at least very slow for whatever reason.
What size pot do you place them in? If you place them in a large pot, they will grow a lot of roots before growing UP, presenting the appearance that they have stalled. If you keep them in a smaller container, they’ll put on top growth faster once they become rootbound. The other option is you aren’t feeding them enough, or they aren’t getting enough hours of sunlight (10-12 hrs is optimal) or heat.
@@eric4946 Walmart "Expert" water soluble at about 1/4 normal strength because, as I say, I use it most times that I water them. They are coming along so maybe they just seem a lot slower than they should.
@@gitatit4046 for continuous fertilization you want about 100 PPM nitrogen. For something with a ~20 nitrogen number that’s 1/2 tsp per gallon. You would use that continuously . Or every other time then double that , so on and so forth.
People swear by the Felco’s, but I’m reluctant to use any tool that “crushes” the wood to make the cut if I want to save the wood. That’s my personal opinion, but not necessarily a hard fact. I usually err on the side of caution.
Im surprised how deep you root cuttings. I place them with the 2nd lowest node 1/2 under the soil. I was under the impression that you would rot on the lower parts.
Generally, you never want to bury them more than halfway. Most go about 40% deep. I like burying 2 nodes, personally. Sometimes, the node spacing is so close that many get buried, though. This is especially common with tip cuttings.
Who uses shears like that? Anyone that has even used scissors on paper knows that it cuts much better further back towards the handle.. Comes across like an infomercial that has people fumble around misusing normal products to try and sell some piece of junk. I realize you deserve to be paid for your videos and that the commission on those saws would help out, but jeez bro! Still love you though man 😆 great video otherwise!

Being very inexperienced I have not pruned my fig tree (in a container). I live in Massachusetts and brought it inside beginning of October i believe. The tree went dormant. Since then There is a good amount of new growth and about 8 nearly full size figs. Is it ok to prune now? When should I?

Truly, I do not know. It depends on the weather and my workload in January. It is incredibly time consuming to do so, like a 100 hour commitment to do it all. If I am able to do so, I will announce it.
Will a Chicago Hardy cutting purchased from Louisiana thrive in Ohio?
Yes, that is a good option for Ohio because it is quick to ripen. Any Mt. Etna type (Chicago Hardy, Marseilles Black VS, Sao Miguel Roxo, etc.) will do well in Ohio thanks to their short hang time.
Great info! I wish I could have given myself this info before buying my first fig tree. I got a rooted cutting from Etsy and it was horrible. Thinner than a pencil and new green wood and it didn’t survive transit. I’ve been watching your videos and found some cuttings on figbid and have successful rooted them! Will you be posting cuttings for sale soon? I’m still looking for a few from your recent top trees list.
Figbid is probably the best place online to get cuttings and rooted cuttings consistently. The overwhelming majority of sellers are legitimate, and the owner is *merciless* with scammers and bad sellers, so they are very few and far between (unlike eBay and Etsy, where scammers are the norm). If a seller on Figbid is well-reviewed, you can almost guarantee you'll get a good product. I just started to populate my page last night, so I am going to make the announcement tomorrow.

Interesting point with the saw. Have you done similar with blueberry hardwood cuttings during the winter? I’ve heard hardwood yields better success.
Also, do you rub the leaf buds off that go underground?
I have not taken cuttings from anything but figs. I do not remove any buds.

when labeling them, write on the top area do that it's still showing once you push into rooting medium
I generally try to if the node space accommodates. Sometimes, the node spacing at the top cannot accommodate this. This is common with “tip” cuttings. Cuttings further down make it easier.
Try rooting that cutting right now, I've found that if you take a cutting and root it as soon as the buds break in spring they just take off. It's like the cuttings are supercharged and root like crazy.
Sometimes they do. It went right into a pot with some mix. It does seem that cuttings taken from trees deeper into dormancy seem to take longer to root.

I'm not sure what you mean. Center of what? Did you prune your fig trees prior to storage, and where you made the cut, you're seeing a hole in the center of the freshly pruned wood?
@@TheMillennialGardenerI did not prune them they were rooted from cuttings and they are about 24” tall. I uppotted before i stored them in my garage and I water once a month with filtered water.

I have not announced the cutting sale yet. I just got back from a vacation today. I will have info within the next week. We just got bombed by several hard freezes, so I need to check that everything is fine beforehand.
What time of year is best to take cuttings? Should the tree/wood be dormant....let's say anywhere between December-February.....or is that ABSOLUTELY the wrong time. If the wood leaks out that white, latex sap is that too early? I see his cuttings look "green" but not sappy. Also, I seem to think starting cuttings in the late fall would be better but can we begin rooting in mid-late winter...???.....(I'm giving that a shot. We'll see if it works).

When you putting up cuttings on figbid?
Probably within 2 weeks. We have a bad few nights coming up this week.
You should get a plastic shoe box( 6qt sterilite) for each one of your fig trees(or just the main ones). Label them and that way when you cut the tree you can have them organized easier. I use a big pair of loppers when I prune. And clean with alcohol spray between each tree.
I cut my cuttings to order, not in advance. But if I stored them, that would be a good spot to keep them.
You should spin them with the Blunt edge actually use them as circular cutters
I have 6 young trees in pots that are about 1.5 yrs old that are in my garage in a cart and i just realized they are all infested with ants. It must have been from when i had the pots sitting on the grass in my backyard for a few weeks during the fall. Any tips on how to best get rid of these ants? Thanks and great video.

You will want to use a bait-style product to kill the colony that has burrowed into your roots.
@@TheMillennialGardener so I got some of this stuff. Do I just sprinkle it into each pot and let it be? The instructions seem specific to mounds of ants. I don’t see any mounding in these pots. I believe they’re 3 gallons. But when I shake the pots a bit, they all start moving around. I’m just afraid they’re gonna destroy all of the roots I worked so hard for.
What do you think of very thin cuttings? Are they viable? I just unpacked some and they are thinner than a pencil. Don’t know if I should waste my time on these.
Thin cuttings are outstanding for grafting. If you don’t graft and you want to root, wrap them in Parafilm, or they likely will dry out before rooting. If you wrap them in Parafilm, they should hold up. Thin cuttings often root faster than thick cuttings.
You took those cuttings before the new growth gets frozen/killed by the next frost. Wise decision. Still a long way to spring. Hope you dont get hit by a late frost like in April 2021. Good Luck from Austria.
We have 7 hard freezes in the 10 day forecast, including 27°F just last night. If my figs can’t survive 27°F, they don’t deserve to grow 😂

Oddly enough I guess I've had less trouble actually rooting figs as I do getting them to grow once they do leaf out. I move them to a pretty sunny window (temp average 75-80) and LIGHTLY fertilize with liquid fertilizer and water roughly twice a week but the growth seems almost be stalled or at least very slow for whatever reason.
What size pot do you place them in? If you place them in a large pot, they will grow a lot of roots before growing UP, presenting the appearance that they have stalled. If you keep them in a smaller container, they’ll put on top growth faster once they become rootbound.
The other option is you aren’t feeding them enough, or they aren’t getting enough hours of sunlight (10-12 hrs is optimal) or heat.
What type of fertilizer are you using ?
@@eric4946 Walmart "Expert" water soluble at about 1/4 normal strength because, as I say, I use it most times that I water them. They are coming along so maybe they just seem a lot slower than they should.
@@gitatit4046 for continuous fertilization you want about 100 PPM nitrogen. For something with a ~20 nitrogen number that’s 1/2 tsp per gallon. You would use that continuously . Or every other time then double that , so on and so forth.

Use a Felco and prune perfect
People swear by the Felco’s, but I’m reluctant to use any tool that “crushes” the wood to make the cut if I want to save the wood. That’s my personal opinion, but not necessarily a hard fact. I usually err on the side of caution.

Im surprised how deep you root cuttings. I place them with the 2nd lowest node 1/2 under the soil.
I was under the impression that you would rot on the lower parts.
Generally, you never want to bury them more than halfway. Most go about 40% deep. I like burying 2 nodes, personally. Sometimes, the node spacing is so close that many get buried, though. This is especially common with tip cuttings.

This is usually what you want to do, if the node spacing allows. Sometimes, the node spacing up too may not allow it. This is common on tip cuttings.
Who uses shears like that? Anyone that has even used scissors on paper knows that it cuts much better further back towards the handle.. Comes across like an infomercial that has people fumble around misusing normal products to try and sell some piece of junk. I realize you deserve to be paid for your videos and that the commission on those saws would help out, but jeez bro! Still love you though man 😆 great video otherwise!
