This is the classic Sony rug pull. They make a somewhat decent, if not good first game, then go woke on the sequel. They did this with Spiderman, Horizon Zero Dawn, TLOU and God of War. Every Sony IP is now officially woke.

It's funny to me. Five years ago, so even post-GG, this likely wouldn't have been a problem. A cause of scrutiny, sure, but not enough to generate a backlash on its own. Our 'side', as much as it could be grouped together despite being decentralised, prided itself on waiting for details before abandoning a franchise. Separating art from artist. Supporting and defending good products even if they were respectfully disagreeable. The first game was good, the new character follows a long established stereotype, the dev's and publisher have kept from anything that could be considered offensive or denegrating to their audience.
If nothing else was said or done by the dev's or publisher and the game was actually good, 'we' might even have taunted the VA with the fact they appeared in a game that didn't fit their outspoken beliefs and that we were enjoying it despite them hating us.
But the long string of DEI failues has left the audience with such a strong learned correlation between this BS and awful games that there's no goodwill or willingness to wait. First sign of problems, throw it on the fire and move on to the next game that might offer hope.
As these activists always wanted, everything is now political and the audience is hyperaware..... but in an amazing backfire it's destroying them as the audience is hyperaware of DEI messaging to the point of collateral damage and indiscriminate in assigning guilt by association the exact same way the activists have for years. Even normies know the signs of an impending flop now includes diversity, after years of meritocratically supporting a huge variation in games with an equally wide variation in characters and themes.

Exactly what I was thinking. In a bubble, all the info we have on this game really shouldn't be cause for alarm. It's a sequel to an extremely well received game with no real issues in the trailer. Yet, here we are. It's a shame it has come to this.

Honestly, I really have faith in Sucker Punch's reputation and legacy. To this day, I don't think they have EVER made a bad game. In their entire library.
Sure, having another generic girlboss MC isn't the best move. But, I'm sure Sony is pressuring them to make DEI adjustments. With that said, I still have a good feeling that SP will still put the players first and Yotei will come out to still be a fantastic game. This is just me being as optimistic as I can for a developer I love so dearly. I AM skeptical, nonetheless.

İf i dont remembering wrong, the same thing happened with Battlefield 5 at the time. And was it EA? Who sayed: if you dont like it, dont buy it. And the gamers sayed: okay. And the game was a big disaster.
And they even celebrated the launch of the game with an in-house party and one of the events there was laughing at/making fun of twitter posts that were against the game and their moves. It worked well I guess.

I'm going to wait until I see more gameplay and ignore the actor and everything as I rather look how the game is first before making a choice. If the game is good then I may consider it as I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic as when I saw the trailer I got the same feel of the world that Ghost of Tsushima had with it being an open world in an area of Japan with deep history to learn about, the first one the isle of Tsushima and with this one the area around Mt. Yotei in Hokkaiddo, environments and action similar to old samurai movies and it looks fine. On top of that the character looks good and she wasn't uglified for the "modern audience" or forcing her role like most others were and in the trailer we just got an idea of the story of this lone woman that's being hunted down for some reason and she's just trying to survive and she seems as natural to her role as Jin was in the first game.
I'm not saying I support the actress, because I sure don't and she clearly needs to be replaced, as well as that other guy who is formally of Sony and shouldn't matter, I'm saying just give it time and Sucker Punch a chance to show us more as this is clearly only one tiny blotch and there's potential for the devs to prove people wrong.

To me, I’m going to wait and see more of the game in terms of Ghost and story, as I want to judge the game for how it plays and the story and not in if I do or don’t support an actress’s views in real life. As long as it doesn’t negatively hurt the game, I’ll be fine with it. If it does, then yes this will be a massive problem

Sucker Punch's GoY will be like TLoUP2, and the studio and creators will be like Naughty Dog.
Imagine if Jin, the main character from the first one somehow comes back (Despite it being a huge leap forward in time from the first game) only to get beaten to death with a golf club and the female protagonist spits on his grave, then proceeds to do everything he did in the first game with zero effort, all while shaming men the whole time.
It'd be a train wreck. TLOUP2 was an awful mess that despite selling well initially completely destroyed the franchise. The far-lefts infiltration of the media has single-handedly been one of the most frustrating things I've had to watch and endure. Seeing so many beloved games, movies and media being butchered for the sake of pushing their agenda is an absolute sin.

People like her and that Kotaku girl are the reason why gamers are wary of games with DEI influence, and are outright abhored. It's because people like them CANNOT separate personal and professional life and blatantly attacks the targetted audience that merely showing some concern.

The big difference between BG3 and Dustborn is that BG3 doesn't actively hate the audience and isn't pushing current day politics down your throat. Dustborn encourages and promotes toxic behavior and acts like this is how society SHOULD be.

I’m in the camp of “wait and see” while the actress playing the main character concerns me a bit, sucker punch has done a great job so far at writing characters and making their games fun rather that spreading a message. I want to see more gameplay and I want to see if the female protagonist is actually going to be written well. I don’t want her to be the type of character that just picks up a sword and immediately becomes skilled with it, I want the game to explain why she’s good at using swords and how she learned to fight.
I'm in the same camp. This actress might have some divisive opinions, but might be able to separate her politics from her performance. Other actors do this literally all the time because that's the job.
As for her martial skill, I suspect her story will be similar to Yuna or is some kind of ronin. Tons of ways to learn how to kill with a blade if you're desperate enough.
In any case, we'll know about any agenda-pushing long before the game arrives on PC.

With that said, I'm more skeptical about why they chose a female protagonist compared to say five or ten years ago. It doesn't sound like they are doing this character because of love but ideological reasons. While the tweets of a voice actor doesn't necessarily reflect the ideological motivations of the company I can't imagine the actor getting hired unless they agreed with her tweets on some level.
It's also fair to assume ideological reasons that have been poisoning games for a long time now is poisoning Ghost of Yotei. There have been plenty of examples where something becomes popular and the activists worm their way into it and co-opt it to push an agenda.

I think they even have a specific name for it, but it escapes me at the moment.

The folk behind GoT and GoY have repeatedly stated themselves to be lovers of old movies, with GoT being inspired by the Kurosawa films. It would not surprise me if they were turning their attention towards more classic Japanese films for the sequel, especially given that they've stated that want to explore the IDEA of the Ghost, more than have it be a continuation. Which itself would also fit their love of the old films of Japan, as they were rarely direct continuations themselves, more so interconnected than anything.
I don't care who they cast as long as her ideology doesn't reflect the said character. But usually, that's not the case cause they modelled after a woke activist, she will ruin the games image on her socials because that's what they do. They don't stfu and keep it professional. But then again, knowing they model after it, it's scary that the game will have an agenda. I wish they stick to the storyline of honor like the Tsushima.

To me, I’m going to wait and see more of the game in terms of Ghost and story, as I want to judge the game for how it plays and the story and not in if I do or don’t support an actress’s views in real life. Since we've seen this pattern of behavior play out so often now, we immediately expect the worst. Some people think we want the game to fail, when we really don't. Ghost of Tsushima was praised to the point that they made the developers official ambassadors for the island of Tsushima. I want the game to be great and to represent Japans culture and history respectfully.
I'd hate to see the good faith they built with Japan ruined as they butcher their culture and inject western "sensibilities" into a game that takes place in Japan in the past.

As "just" an actor, their politics ought to have little impact on the game... but sadly that's not how the world works, they probably have a lot of sway on the game's direction, and there are probably others in the studio with similar takes that WILL affect the game.
We'll probably see more new games in the short term fall flat with this crap too - anything that started in development like year or two ago, a bit behind the recent anti-DEI backlash, could be another year or two as devs clean up their teams and catch up (hopefully)

Honestly, unlike AC Shadows, I'm still going to give GoY a try. I don't care much about the politics of the English VA/motion capture actor, as much as I care for the gameplay. So long as the gameplay is just as good as GoT or even better, and as long as Sucker Punch can keep it as cultural appreciation, then I'm all for this game. To find a problem in an actor's politics is something I expect anti-gamers to do, quite frankly. Call it cope if you want, but at least the 1st game was excellent and highly regarded, and I think it stands to reason we could hope for the same in GoY--despite the political views of the MC's actor.

This feels like they're (the youtubers I usually follow) are jumping the gun way too fast on this one. yes, I'll still be suspicious that her politics bled into the game, but Sucker Punch hasn't given me a reason to doubt their ability to tell a great story, so far. She's actually a professional when it comes to her roles and knows how to actually keep her personal life ideals separate from work. She's going to play the role as it was written and directed, and all the bandwagon hate is BS before even seeing any real extended cut scenes or gameplay and definitely uncalled for and defamation of character..
