    Mine is in the south/east window, and since it's seated on the floor, it's basically only the top leaves that get direct sun, for, I don't know, 2 hours probably a day. it didn't do them any harm and in fact, when the plant is elsewhere, it starts to grow tiny leaves which are often crooked, so it definitely needs more light for nice big and straight leaves. Granted, I'm talking about burgundy, or somesuch (they're sold only with specified genus here, so I can typically figure out the species (tho not always, like I can't for the life of me figure out the difference between dracaena reflexa, and dracaena fragrans, and probably few more), but with dozen different varieties that I can't tell what's the difference and no one online explaining what the differences are, it can be a number of different varieties that all look the same... but yeah, that one can definitely take some direct sun

    I thought I had my plant care skills down but this plant has really hurt my self-esteem. I realized it had spider mites a couple weeks after bringing it home from Costco. I Sprayed it down until it was dripping with a diluted rubbing alcohol solution, kept it away from my other plants until I was confident the spider mites were gone. The mites are gone, but it dropped some leaves after the fact, lower down. I just chalked it up to damage from the spider mites and figured it'd continue to grow just fine. About five days ago I took it outside to spray off the old media so I could give it some fresh soil. I Sprayed the whole root system down with the hose, took it inside and proceeded to repot it with fresh media; a mix of high quality, coarse potting mix and perlite. About a 2 to 1 ratio. Since then, this poor plant has continued to drop a few leaves, but worse yet it's completely drooping over to one side. The plant has ten individual stalks and was super full, plush and upright when I got it. Now all 10 of the stalks droop as do the leaves. I've never overwatered this plant and have kept it about five feet back from a western window. I've also never fertilized. Any idea why this could be happening? Only thing I can think is that the root system was shocked by the strong water pressure of the hose. I've done this with several plants in the past and never had any adverse effects from it. So far it is quite the drama queen and a problematic plant for me, sadly. Spider mites, now dropping and dropping leaves. I'm pretty bummed over this and hope it eventually bounces back.

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  3 года назад

      I've noticed my ficus doesn't recover very well either. I had similar leaf drop after spider mites, even after they had been killed off. Slowly over time, it started to grow at the top of the plant again and I ended up chopping it to propagate. Yours sounds like it's been through a lot in a short period of time. The drooping sounds to me like it was from the root shock of the hose and repot. Hopefully it'll bounce back soon. Keep up the good work. It sounds like you're doing all the right things! Good luck!

      @@GoodGrowing You're very kind. Thank you 😄 You live and learn, right. This gives me hope that it won't go and die on me completely. You're right, it did go through a lot in a short period of time. Poor plant. Propogation is a good idea, I will try that once I think it's a bit better off. It's seeming to perk up a little, which is good. Leaves still drop periodically. Thank you for responding to my novel and sharing your experience! • @GoodGrowing

    Hi Emma, as we both live in London, i wanted to know how often you are watering your plant? Mine is quite a bit smaller but i'm finding that i'm losing the lower leaves one after the other. I've lost 3 in the past week and another is slowly turning yellow. Seems like overwatering although i had not watered for almost 2 weeks. The first couple of inches of the soil were dry but cool so i watered today although i probably should not have. Any advice? The weather has not been great so not sure what to do

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  4 года назад +2

      Hey London plant friend! I have found that the soil they came in holds quite a lot of water, even for the smaller plants. So I really don't water that often. Maybe once every 1.5 weeks when its super hot and sunny. Since it's been so dismal here the past few I've done even less, maybe every 2.5 weeks for the smaller ones and very rarely for the big ones. I prefer to wait until the soil is nearly all dry rather than just the top couple of inches, because they can tolerate draught better than being too wet! Sorry that's a really long answer but I hope it helps! Good luck!

    • @rhymer2k
      @rhymer2k 4 года назад

      @@GoodGrowing Hello! That is a perfect answer and it tells me all i need to know. The soil they come is inadequate for correct watering and I've been overwatering. I lost another leaf today just by brushing against it. What can i do? Repot? I'm slowly resigning to losing the plant sadly

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  4 года назад

      @@rhymer2k Yeah I'd suggest repotting it in some better draining soil. Repotting will also give you a chance to check out the roots to make sure they're alright, not rotting. Also is it new? It's possible that its going into a bit of shock because of the transition to your home, and that would cause leaves to fall too.

    • @rhymer2k
      @rhymer2k 4 года назад

      @@GoodGrowing appreciate the responses Emma. It's just over a month old and it grew out a new leaf in the meantime and has a tiny one growing. Was about 30cm with 10 leaves and a new one growing in a sheath. That new one has emerged and since then I've lost 4 leaves with the latest being today. The other leaves look like they have lost rigidity a little bit and are flopping downward apart from the new one which is upright.

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  4 года назад

      @@rhymer2k Ahh I'm sorry that really sucks. I know a lot of people though who have struggled with a new ficus elastica. Because I do think they go into a bit of shock at the big move. And that usually shows up after a few weeks, so it would make sense that it't now. I'd say just continue keeping it in the right conditions while it adjusts to your home. Best of luck!

    I'm so confused about light. Does indirect light mean no actual sun directly on the plant? Or no light at all directly on the plant? Mine is 1.5 ft from a south window. Should I move it further away?

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  4 года назад

      So basically direct light refers to sun going directly onto the plant. This can cause sunburn similar to humans and lots of indoor plants really don't like it. Bright indirect is when they're getting bright light, but not directly on the leaves. For example, through a very thin curtain or reflected off a white wall. 1.5 ft from a S window sounds like its probably getting direct sun and it's probably a good idea to move it further if that's the case. Best of luck!
