  • Six Flags and Cedar Fair just announced they'll be merging under one name and one brand... Six Flags. This includes parks like Six Flags Magic Mountain, Great Adventure, Cedar Point and Kings Island. Find out why I think this is terrible news for the theme park industry in this video.

    Completely agree with you. We need healthy competetion between parks not a monopoly.

    I agree. The merger was created based on stock and a quarterly earnings report. The potential $200m alleged to be saved by the merger will simply be paid to shareholders and not invested in the parks. How many times have we seen this happen with other companies? Eliminate competition, raise prices and lower the quality of experience. None of this is good.

    I totally agree about this being an awful change. Like seriously, who thought this was a good idea? I'll use a video game analogy. Madden, the exclusively licensed NFL simulation game, is awful. Why? Because it doesn't have competition. Before the parent company got the exclusive license, there were other games that pushed Madden to be better. The lack of competition ruined the game. Same thing applies here. Without competition, the parks will just suffer and there's no reason to improve them. It's an awful move for the industry and I hope at least some of the smaller parks like Worlds of Fun or Valleyfair get sold to another chain or local developers interested in owning a theme park.

      If the FTC is awake, I would expect this. More importantly, I'd like the FTC to have a word with the FCC. While hundreds of doctors have been petitioning for 5G- and its electromagnetic destruction to insects (the basis of the world's food supply) and everyone else (including ourselves)- to be stopped, the FCC is proudly (forcibly) rolling it out to try to lead the world. My memory isn't perfect, but I don't recall voting to be murdered.

    I can understand where this is coming from Six Flags wants better menegememt and guest experience, and Cedar Fair wants better ips. After the pandemic this became inevitable: Either they shrink or they merge

    I feel like another part of the reason as to why they did this is to expand overseas
    for decades they've only been in North America

    California’s Great America’s days are already numbered and Knotts & Magic Mountain aren’t really in competition with each other anyway. There aren’t any other places where Cedar Fair and Six Flags are directly competing with each other. Ultimately it’s about generating enough desire for people of that specific region to return and enough hype to bring people in for the first time. I don’t feel like this will affect competition in any way as the standard way we think of market competition doesn’t really exist when it comes to regional theme parks with just a few exceptions

    • @hellomerio
      @hellomerio  10 месяцев назад

      I guess I see what you're saying but even so I do feel like the two major players in the regional parks combining makes for a much less competitive environment. Not sure who could even compete in the market with them combined.

    • @theheardtheorem
      @theheardtheorem 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@hellomerio I would think that anyone wanting to build an amusement park would never build one in a metro area that Six Flags or Cedar Fair were already located. It would make much more sense to build one in a city that currently doesn’t have a regional them park like Houston, Austin, Albuquerque, Phoenix, New Orleans, Miami, Nashville, Indianapolis, Denver (Elich Gardens doesn’t really count IMO), Portland or Seattle. If anything, I could see the merger scaring the crap out of Sea World and they could decide to start a good old fashioned coaster war in Virginia and San Antonio and Six Flags could struggle to keep up because they have their attention and resources divided so much. This could wind up being really great for Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Sea World San Antonio.

    I completely disagree with this. I actually think this was a great move for both companies. We've seen similar success in 2017 when Bass Pro Shops acquired Cabela's, and although that's an entirely different field of business, it doesn't mean the same type of achievement can't happen with these two either. In fact, I think Six Flags can learn a lot from Cedar Fair, such as better operations, improvements in cleanliness and atmosphere, and less ride closures.

    Usually when 2 competitors merge, they look to eliminate cost. Senior Mgmnt will be a target. They will also probably try to get better deals from contractors & manufacturers. It could also be a premptive move by Six Flags to guard against a potential acquisition of WB by Comcast and thereby protecting their DC license.

    I agree the points you made throughout the video, but I would expect some legal interruptions (For example: FTC will sue Cedar Fair for unfair competition with the other theme park chains in North America).

      Thoos ie nonsense with business igonrance. SF and CF do not compete except in 2 markets...SF Bay (CGA was already closing) and LA(massive markets and Knotts and SFMM target completely different core patrons)

  • @jandrew1994
    @jandrew1994 10 месяцев назад +1

    It's a monopoly for sure.
    Throw out Florida, and CF/CP is like 70% of the market share. Seaworld and the independent parks including the Herschend parks, probably a total of 30%.
    It's a monopoly in 47 out of the lower 48 states.
    The federal government should block this.

  • @TrueLies23
    @TrueLies23 10 месяцев назад +1

    They weren't in competition with eachother as it was. They're competing with every single other entity that receives your entertainment dollars.
    The idea of competition between the chains only exists in the season pass holder who visits more than 2 parks with all park access, and even at that point, we arent talking yearly visits. Most people arent doing a gauntlet of parks every year, but more or less rotations of visiting parks depending on new additions and proximity.

    Since CGA is shutting down, the new company could possibly move the main rides and even staff the Discovery kingdom if they bought new land. I think that could be great for the area

  • @exinobelgonzalez2874

    The ftc i going to make them sell off parks in duplicate markets. Great america's days are numbered, but mm and knotts are a little over an hour away from eachother. Both are too important to their chains to be sold off in my opinion, so maybe they will somehow make changes to the parks to appeal them to different audiences and somehow makes it a multi day deal like Disney does with disneyland and ca adv. Busch gardens tampa and sea world orlando are a little over an hour away from eachother and are very similar to eachother being animal themed and owned by the same co and do quite well without stepping on eachother's toes. Discovery kingdom should be safe being ablut 6 hoirs away. Sf is still competing against disney and universal so they are going to need to innovate to stay competitive. Dorney park worries me though, its way too close to gadv and i highly dount that the new sf would chose dorney over gadv from a profit standpoint. Gadv is one of SF's flagships parks. The chains otherwise dont overlap too closely in other markets. Im actually excited to se SF get reborn and course correct the past 25 years of its' history. Looking back when premier parks bought SF and assumed their name, they were not the most appropriate company to buy the chain. Premier had chewed off way more than they could chew and in the process gave Sf the cheap discount feel that it has and bankrupted sf in the process. With the merger, it will give the new company the ability to keep the company with the six flags name but operate with the cedar fair identity which is known for a mich richer park experience

    You're fearmongering a little. Take a step back and realize that you're being a little bit too reactionary from this "lack of competition" as the main basis of your argument because it's long hanging fruit for negativity. I understand that. It's less risky to jump to worst case imagined scenarios based on emotions and beliefs rather than facts and data. This is just fear of change running rampant and so you've cherry-picked the worst aspects of what feels monopolistic (which is isn't based on the market share in the industry) to generalize the entire situation that's happening.
    While I do agree that in some cases, lack of competition CAN lead to de-incentivizing, you seem to forget that this is a public company and there are a lot more things out there that will influence and incentivize these parks to bring in crowds and keep their shareholders happy here. You also seem to ignore how even despite many of a handful of these parks are already in current proximity with each other at the moment that these parks individually have extremely different atmospheres, attractions, value propositions, and general aesthetics in very large areas that appeal to all sorts of different people .
    How about you make a video that weighs both the potential cons and the potential benefits from across the board more objectively or holistically?

    • @hellomerio
      @hellomerio  10 месяцев назад +1

      I think there are potential perks but overall I still don't see this as a good change. I understand that in some ways I was imagining the worst case scenarios but I do think at least some of this will come true. We've seen what happens when Six Flags bites off more than it could chew. But maybe it will turn out okay.
      As for the differing parks, honestly while I love some more than others, I do think they are similar in terms of what they offer. Of course, it's different thrill rides depending on where you're going, but for the most part both Cedar Fair and Six Flags parks are focused on thrill rides and, more recently, family rides. I do think they're going for essentially the same market, and while that makes sense somewhat for a merger, I just don't see many others competing in that space nationwide. There is SeaWorld and Herschend, but they have much less reach in comparison.
      I think others have made a more balanced comparison, and perhaps I should have, but this was just kind of my initial thoughts and backlash to the move. I don't have much hope in terms of positive change but it is possible. We'll have to wait and see

    Excellent Video- I agree that this seems like a textbook monopoly. Neither business has a consistent competitor aside from each other. In addition, this merger, as reported, is designed for the past (corporate bullet points, investor presentations) rather than for the future (soulful purpose first, harmonization with the rightful land stewardship of indigenous tribes, rich care for nature and her interconnected ecosystems, deep visionary complete wellbeing of employees, etc.). The merger announcement may as well have been written by ChatGPT. My heart wants to harmonize with other altruistic souls, not those potentially financing their retirement as corporate cogs with fast-talking robotic calculators.

    They want to compete with Disney and universal in bringing good experiences and theme events and more as the economy is not booming so people have less money surplus so they can’t travel to Florida or California or out of the country so they want to take as many people as they can that are either getting priced out by Disney and universal so hopefully they love the park and come more often and will return even if they do have money to go somewhere else that’s what they want to do now they know they own the coaster thing but they need families to want to come regularly or regardless of liking rollercoasters or stuff like that one reason I know this is because look at six flags and how they been trying to make their Halloween event better by bringing in IPs last year now they got even more with bigger studios ones that work exclusively with universal in the past think you need to make a new video honestly looking good for the company right now
