    The sad reality is that humans are capable of extreme evil without any supernatural help. Sharon Tate and Nicole Brown were both innocent young women who were brutally murdered in violent ways. Those poor women should be allowed to rest in peace. A movie that honors the memory of such a victim might have value, but The Haunting of Sharon Tate is the worst kind of exploitative trash.

    You can shape history to a crazy extreme when it's old enough for all those involved to have either moved on or (in some cases) to have passed. More modern history like this shouldn't be shaped in such a mocking(ly bad) way. Especially when someone directly affected is openly voicing discomfort, even at the start. This isn't a documentary, this is shaping a murder victim's life in a poorly done and disrespectful way in the eyes of the victim's family.

    • @Crisjola
      @Crisjola 3 года назад +2

      @@tosinakin2508 agreed. But on one hand it also depends, especially depending on how far back you go and what it is you're trying to do with whatever your movie/book/game.
      I mean Rome doesn't exist as a country and I didn't even specialize in it as a field of study under History but that weird XBone (I think?) launch title that totally misrepresented Nero as Emperor was irritating enough that I'll take "poorly done Knights if the Round Table fight Werewolves with an implausible/alt history Nikola Tesla in London" (The Order: 1886) game over "Ryse: Son of Rome." And while generally the further you get away from it, or the more muddied the waters are (I believe Jack the Ripper came up in other threads) the more you can "get away with" you can't do that kind of thing to anything recently without being very careful.
      I was old enough to remember *that shooting* (YT watching) that happened here in the US in a high school and wondering, not too many years later when American Horror Story: Murder House decided to tackle a similar issue how it would be done to not be really insensitive. And to be very fair, I was young, but it changed my whole life since how High Schools operated became different and even State/Junior colleges. But I didn't know/wasn't *actually* personally effected by it, and while I believe that AHS:Murder House handled it well and released around the time when there hadn't been any violent acts that had occurred in the last few years, I can't speak for anyone effected directly. I do know that they did a good job of presenting the issue as "this person was a monster but usually teenaged monsters who aren't whacking cats tend might finally just snap" and I *did* , on a much less violent level, see that kind of thing happen when I was in Teen Court where bullied kids (even from *great* homes) were ignored by our broken schools and finally punched the bullies back and got hauled off to, at best, Teen Court. At worse, actual court, and they might have been physically assaulted for years before finally striking out.
      I think it's a case by case basis, and a lot of the issues with *this* movie, the "Haunting of Sharon Tate" are the fact that it's behaving like a schlocky slasher horror (I've only seen trailers) and not going off the deep end. What Quentin Tarantino did was the right way to do it. Because I'm not saying that the solution would be to… I don't know… change the entire world so much that it's now an urban fantasy where history can be rewritten. If it's far enough away (like the Ripper Murders) maybe, but still, tact-and the generalized way we might romanticize a time period (like the gangsters of the 1920s or the "Wild West.")
      But yeah, if someone, *especially* a surviving family member isn't happy/is uncomfortable with a much more respectful version… going full off the rails and just ignoring (forget the letter!) their wishes is a trash move.

  • @Hermititis
    @Hermititis 4 года назад +298

    • @msjkramey
      @msjkramey 4 года назад +16

      The issue here is that RUclips is a private company. The 1st amendment guarantees your right to free speech, but it doesn't guarantee you a platform, so private companies can censor as much or as little as they want. They see it as safer to censor upon request so they don't get involved in lengthy, expensive lawsuits. It's only the government that doesn't have the right to censor you
      If I had a private streaming company, for example, I wouldn't allow alt-right people to spout bigotry on my platform. Is that violating their rights? No. It's my private company and they can take their speech elsewhere where it's accepted
      I do wish that there was more respect of fair use, but RUclips unfortunately doesn't owe its creators anything and they know it

    See I can get with the vision a little, the multiverse, never ending choices thing really interests me but doing it with a real person and case just makes my skin crawl it’s almost like dangling something in front of them and snatching it away. Like I’m sure the family and people affected think every day about how they wish things could be different

    You make a lot of excellent points. The only thing I want to add is that it's hilarious that he mentions Peggy Sue Got Married as his inspiration for directing these exploitative films when the most notable thing about Peggy Sue is Nicolas Cage's attempts to piss his uncle Francis Ford Coppola off. It's glorious, but it is definitely not "a beautiful story of a woman finding a different destiny" or whatever.

    I've had a family member that was tortured then murdered, and a close friend that committed suicide. Both times I played over and over in my head alternate scenarios of their last days alive; coming up with so many ways that it all could have ended differently. I can't emphasize enough how that was NOT therapeutic!

    It honestly feels like his letter is saying that this film is his horror fantasy of the events that took place. I mean he literally says he used horror films to cope, so this movie is more about giving life to how he wanted his nightmares to end rather than an actual homage to the family and victims.

    I don't remember which sketch comedy show it was but there was a sketch where OJ Simpson's defense team was going through time to get horrible criminals off. One was Charles Manson, and their defense was that Sharon Tate was pregnant with the antichrist, and that was why Roman Polanski made Rosemary's Baby. That makes more sense than the premise of this film.

    There are so many horrible things that happened in the far past (100+ years ago) that a person could use for a horror movie. They could put in modern time and still say “based on a true story” b/c we all know that doesn’t mean shit. It would still give all the shock that one like this movie would but wouldn’t hurt anyone in the process. Why is that so hard for directors to understand?

    The brutality of this murder was that Sharon Tate was 8 months pregnant when she and her unborn son were murdered. This is kind of a big deal - they killed both her and her unborn son, who would’ve been easily able to survive had he been, for instance, born early for a different reason, as 8 months is usually easily advanced enough to save the baby. So yeah, the Manson family murdered Sharon and her son in a disgustingly brutal and bloody way. I won’t - yeah I am not going to be able to watch this one. But I do thank you for doing it for us!
