    Billy, you are right at 0:48. My father was stationed at Ray Barracks in the late 50's. He was a Major, we lived in the quarters near the back gate. Elvis was in my father's platoon (Spearhead). My 3 sisters and I used to walk along that back fence to the plum orchards and fields to play. One day we were walking along the fence in front of his barracks, and Elvis was sitting on the window sill playing his guitar, and asked us what our names were! He told us who he was. One night my parents were going to a party at the Officers Club, and my dad said if we were good for the babysitter he would bring us his autographs. We were 5, 6, 7, and 8 years old at the time, so it must have been 1959. Our quarters were the 2nd to last building catty corner to the back gate. My dad said that was the party that he met Pricilla, and Elvis played his guitar all night! Mom said Priscilla was drop dead gorgeous! And dad gave us all his autographed pics. I have many fond memories of growing up there. My 2 sisters returned there on a trip to Germany in 2005 and visited the quarters we used to live in. Our names were still there scribbled on the basement wall. Thank you for the blast from the past!

    I was stationed there in 1977-1981. Elvis lived at the barracks for 2 days until he found quarters in Bad Nauheim which is close by. He was the Brigade Commander's driver while he was stationed there. His pictures of him and the Brigade Commander at the time hung in the Brigade Commander's office where I would pull duty from time to time as Brigade Officer of the day as a 2nd Lieutennant. Loved the German people. Not as crazy about the Army however! Thanks for sharing, Billy!

      @@garrettanderson7764 Yes, sir! And you would have been there during Colonel Phil's tour, I would suppose? I also recall doing Brigade Duty Officer stints as well. I remember one time when i had a sergeant who was sitting in a tree waiting for Colonel Lyssey to show up for PT one morning. He was sitting in the tree and had an axe handle he was going to use to bash in his head. I reported him to the MP's which created a blotter report. Lyssey called me in to ask why I did it, even though the sergeant swore that he would kill him if he got the chance. I asked him, "Should I have left him alone and let him kill you instead, Sir?" Lyssy did not like my attitude and did not give me an answer. He just hated having to go to Col. Phil's office to explain the situation. I liked LTC Larry Beal, though! Him and his dog, Sandy. The inventor of the, "Beal Wheel"! Interesting times indeed!

      @@williamrooth Something about axes at Ray Barracks. When I was doing the rounds as duty officer, an axe came flying out of a window towards me from one of 1/36 INF barracks. A lot of fun. Contrary to you, LTC Beale and I were on very bad terms. Probably 75% my fault and 25% his. That M24 Chaffee that was in front Brigade Headquarters what from Graf's hard target junk yard. 1/32 picked it and got into running condition in 1978. I wonder whatever happened to it. Oh Friedberg. Thanks Billy. Saw Elvis in one of his last televised show when I was a boy. Went on to served in the Army and was stationed at Ray Barracks for over 2 years. It was still the 1/32nd Armor Regiment when I got there. Was deactivated a year later and became the 4/67th in the 3rd Armored Division. I was a Combat Medic and had stayed in Elvis old two story barracks. A year later in 1987 we were moved into the new multi-story red brick buildings. Man, sure brought back a lot of memories. It's sad to see the base closed and abandoned like that. It's in my bucket list to visit the old base and walk down the the old Friedberg streets again. Had a Chinese girlfriend who's father owned a Chinese restaurant there. She was born in Germany and had taught me conversational German. I'm Japanese-American so we communicated in German and some English. Funny as hell!

    Billy, I decided to rewatch this because I once again saw something about the barracks being torn down. Glad you got it all on film just in case they do. You never know there are so many places being demolished. Maybe someday they will replace the replica of Elvis with a metal one or a statue. After all he was the most famous soldier to ever be stationed there. Going in a private first class and released as buck Sergeant. Not bad for the length of time Elvis was there. Thank you so much Spa Guy and those who helped make the trip possible.

    So the monument to Elvis in the roundabout is some kind of weather-proof particle board . It certainly looks to have been Laser cut from metal , when viewed from a distance , with the cutting blank right beside it ! A very cool design ! This means that any one could replicate it with a few sheets of ply-wood and a saber saw . I wonder where the corresponding blank for the guitar is ?

The fatigues he was wearing in the picture where he’s signing autographs may have been the very uniform he was wearing that day we saw him! Thank you so much for doing this, Spa Guy! I was based there 1964-66. At that time, the Ray Barracks was much smaller. I believe that many of the buildings you filmed were built after I left there in 66. I recognize many of the buildings from when I was there. I saw the building I lived in. You correctly identified the front gate. The tower across the street from the front gate was a wasser tur (water tank tower) that was also a German War Memorial. The building inside the front gate was where the 503rd Military Police Company was housed and also where the base brig was . I don't think there was a gate across from the Elvis monument. There was just a large field there. It was used for tank parades.
    Enjoyed your video.

    You have a lot of facts close but no cigar. I was stationed at ray barracks. In the beginning you were close to the entrance for officer housing personnel. Delta company and HQ company are two different buildings. Elvis was in headquarters first then Delta company, which is why his barracks is number is different. If you see a helipad then motor pool close to the green gate you came up to when you started to drive. Thats where the Barracks building for delta company was and I know because it was my barracks. The green gate was never used, plus it wasn't green.( only for road marches, deployments, and Reforgers). After the green gate was our 2 mile course for Physical Fitness. The infantry battalions were at the 6.27 and the buildings were in the back where the armor battalions were because of the motorpools.

    The Bike riders are at the Gate that Elvis & them used in the 50s & 60s..WE used the main Gate....
    That gate where the bikes are is called 'Bandit -Gate" As we were "the Bandits' in 1/32 Armor

    @ the beginning of the video, This is what we referred to as the back gate or the foot gate. No vehicles traveled in or out at this location. It was a quick and easy way for the soldiers to come and go to town. Those barracks at the back gate is not where Elvis was. His location was in the polar opposite side of this location. There are probably at least a have dozen buildings identical to this one. I wasn't there when Elvis was, but heard many stories. If I am not mistaken I believe the location of his barracks were across from the post recreation building by the refueling station. In the vicinity of the chow hall he built.

      I think I show in this video from a drone view where his barracks was.. I know I did in one video.. When you go through the far right gate which is the one I think you are talk able his was on the first road to the left about 4-5 up on the right..

    The Ray barracks sign was not where you assumed it was, it's been between those two little walls behind the new gate.

    Great videos, I spent a few years at ray barracks in the early 90s. Elvis was great. I find it interesting though, how the senior officers and NCOs we’re so willing and eager, to disregard regulations on fraternization and favoritism toward Pvt Presley.

    Glad to hear the base is abandoned. Otherwise, flying a drone over an active military base without clearance is a felony. I’m sure you know this Spa Guy, but a heads up for others. Great video!

    Thank you for the video Billy, it is very enlightening. I looked closely at the picture of Elvis signing autographs with the Ray Barracks sign in the background. To me, the sign appears to be much closer to the building, rather than to the gate which you were standing outside of. There appears to be two large cement or brick pillars which I believe the sign may have been attached to, or slightly behind them. You can see them clearly at the 11:20 mark. What do you think?

    • @SpaGuy
      @SpaGuy  6 лет назад +3

      You got the easter egg.. You are correct the banner sign was on the pillars further in not the ones at the guard shacks as I stated..

    • @dulls8475
      @dulls8475 6 лет назад

      Spa Guy I think the location of where he is standing is next to the guard hut on the left side. You can just see the edge of it. Jollen seems to be correct about the sign being further back. Ps I love your vids.
