There will never be anyone like Taemin, and to think that he made his debut too young, when he was just a child. He also changed the spectrum of how Korean male idols and male soloists in general were viewed. Taemin has a powerful voice and dance and his passion on stage is always reflected... 15 years in the game and there is always something new he has to say or tell through music. That's what you call being an artist. Taemin is the Blueprint.

Honestly there may be 3rd or 4th gen idols now, who are more popular (especially among teenagers), but when it comes to artistry, when it comes to live performance capabilities and when it comes to discography, music and stylistic choices and most of all quality there’s absolutely no one who comes close to Taemin in my opinion. And that’s why he’s my favorite artist out there. You should watch this whole concert to have a better idea how mesmerizing of a spectacle it actually is - seeing one song out of context is not enough… As you noticed staying relevant and on top of the game in such a competitive industry and for such a long time is extremely difficult. Taemin managed to achieve that and he’s constantly improving and evolving. He’s the epitome of hard work and incredible talent - he lives and breathes music and I absolutely can’t wait for what he brings into the table when he’s finally back! I hope he keeps performing until he’s 40 or more, I can truly picture him do it!

Taemin became a trainee with SM when he was about 11 years old, prior to that he had no formal dance training and he wasn't a singer. He started out as a self-taught popper and locker who learned to dance by copying dancers on TV, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. He said he thought dancers like Kpop idol Rain and Michael Jackson were cool, so he would try and copy their moves. He debuted as the main dancer of SHINee when he was 14 -- so he had about 3 years of training as a dancer once he became a trainee.
Also, if you notice, Taemin's style of singing, especially in SHINee songs, is a lot like Jonghyun. Jonghyun was the one that really took Taemin under his wing and helped him to become the singer and performer that he is today. So, many think that Taemin's voice emulates Jonghyun because he is the one that taught Taemin to sing.
You may find this hard to believe, but in SHINee's early days Taemin didn't have a whole lot of lines in their songs. People even used to make fun of Taemin's singing and they would say that he was tone deaf and couldn't sing. However, it's sort of a misconception that Taemin "couldn't sing." it wasn't that he couldn't sing, it was just that he debuted when he was so young -- he was only 14 years old -- that his voice hadn't really developed yet and he didn't really have a good grasp of how to use his voice and produce the sounds he wanted with it. So, in the beginning, when he sang he was often flat or his voice cracked or he was off key or out of tune, etc.
And because he was being compared to the other members of SHINee who are all 2 to 4 years older than him, and the other members had such phenomenal voices to start out with, it really made Taemin sound like he was lacking. That's why in SHINee's first few songs you will see that he only has a few lines, and most of the time he was just given big solo dance breaks to fill the stage at his parts in the song.
However, if he was really tone deaf he never would have become an SM Idol trainee -- SM would have put him on the dance track and probably steered him toward becoming a backup dancer -- and he definitely would have never become the amazing singer that he is today. Someone who is truly tone deaf is physically unable to hear the difference in the notes and is unable to carry a tune.
But Taemin really wanted to prove to everyone that he wasn't just a dancer, so he spent a lot of extra time concentrating on vocal lessons and the other SHINee members -- especially Onew and Jonghyun -- spent some serious time coaching and mentoring him until he learned what it took to match their vocal range and to use his voice. (For the first year or more Taemin spent hours in vocal lessons and he would push himself everyday until his nose would bleed because he was so tired and worn out, etc. He practically lived in the training rooms at SM.)
So, most of what you see is just natural talent and an unbelievable amount of dedication. Taemin has put in a lot of effort to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today. But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. He has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training.
It is also a well known fact among long time fans, that for most of SHINee's career Taemin struggled with being an introvert and he often never spoke in interviews and on variety shows unless spoken to. He would let the other members carry the conversation. The members often talk about how they would have to prompt him to get him to speak. He is also known for telling a story or answering a question in an interview and half way through the story, he would stop speaking and just go quiet again. The other members often had to fill in the blanks for him and nudge him to get him to focus and keep on talking.
It wasn't until around 2014 when Taemin had his solo debut and he had to start doing promotions and interviews by himself that he really forced himself to change and to come out of his shell. This was also part of the reason why Taemin struggled with self-image issues, where he worried about the fact that people always saw him as weak and helpless and often only knew him for his looks. This is the reason why Jonghyun wrote "Pretty Boy" for Taemin because Jonghyun wished the public would be able to see and understand the Taemin, he knew as a strong and masculine guy, and to stop looking at him as just a fragile "pretty boy." (BTW, "Petty Boy" is a B-side track on Taemin's solo debut album Ace and it features Kai from EXO, who is Taemin's best friend since their trainee days, as the rapper in the song. Taemin and Kai even performed the song together as part of Taemin's solo debut promotions.)
This is part of the duality that is Taemin's personality. When not on stage performing, Taemin is a completely different person, and the Taemin you see when he is just hanging out with his members, isn't necessarily what he shows to the general public.
Although, when Taemin is with the other members of SHINee he often still reverts back to being the baby of the group and just lets the rest of the members take on the responsibility of carrying the conversations in interviews, etc. It is not uncommon to see Taemin off in his own little world during interviews, he even still does it as a member of SuperM. Taemin will always have that maknae mindset no matter who he is with. Which is one of the reasons he turned down the role as the leader of SuperM, because he is much more comfortable as the maknae and didn't feel prepared for the leader role, etc.
But that's what makes him even more loveable, because no matter how famous he gets or how many admirers he has, he never loses himself or tries to be something different than his authentic self.
As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does.
Taemin has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue, that that now extends to the entire industry of dance.
The first time he says he really took a break was around 2018 when he took 3 days off, and he said he hated it. That is why you see him constantly working and churning out hit after hit. Just consider the amount of comebacks and projects, etc. he was involved in during the year and a half, or so, before he enlisted in the military. He had one comeback after another, after another -- which all had MVs -- plus solo concerts, SHINee concerts, an SuperM concert tour and an SMTown concert, along with promoting it all with performances, variety show appearances and interviews, etc. And in between all of that he recorded an OST for a drama, etc. He literally was going nonstop.
Taemin has released at least one song or album -- most of the time way more than just one -- as part of SHINee, as a member of a project group, as a solo artist or as a member of SuperM every year since SHINee's debut. He has debuted in 3 Kpop generations -- second gen. with SHINee, third gen. as a solo artist and 4th gen. as a member of SuperM -- and yet he is the same age or younger than most 3rd and even some 4th gen idols.
And look how it's all paid off, he is now one of SHINee's main vocalists and considered one of the top dancers and male solo artists in the industry. Not only has he risen to the level of talent as a member of SHINee, but he also became one of the first of SM's group members to have a solo career and to prove he could hold solo concerts that broke records all on his own. That is why he deserves all the respect and admiration he gets.
You should watch some of Taemin's concert documentaries to see just how hard he trains and works. If you search RUclips you will find 2 or 3 from his solo concerts, as well as documentaries/behind the scenes of SHINee's concerts.

Other people probably told you that Taemin debuted in 3 generations of KPop. 2nd gen with SHINee, 3rd gen as a solo artist and 4th gen with Super M. Also, when he debuted, his voice was changing so he worked and worked and worked even more to become the vocalist, dancer, performer and artist that you see today.

It's is mesmerizing and not even his best performance of this song. Regarding live singing, it's extremely easy to tell whether or not Taemin is actually singing: you will not see his lips move. Taemin doesn't believe in wasting his energy on lip-synching when he's not singing. He knows his fans will understand that he needs to take quick breaks now and then. At the time of Sayonara Hitori's release, he said this is his most difficult song to sing live with the choreo. The actual MV for this is INSANE, like a cross between live action anime and Final Fantasy. I definitely recommend you watch/react to it.
That being said, Taemin does try to do as much live singing as physically possible for his fans. During his very first concert in 2017 (Budokan, Japan), Taemin performed this song last after 12 other songs. He was dripping with sweat, but he managed to sing quite a bit. The actual performance was breathtaking: ruclips.net/video/UDn0NtP136M/видео.html However, when he exited the stage, he had to hang his head between his legs, and said he felt like he was going to be very sick. He was also shaking. An attendant gave him some water to sip. Taemin quickly pulled himself together, went back on-stage and sang a beautiful ballad as an encore.
All of this was captured during the filming of the mini-doc for this concert: ruclips.net/video/kZKsf5cgPfk/видео.html (Turn on English subs.)

This is one of my favorite Japanese songs by Taemin!! Thank you so much for the reaction and comments!! 😍
SHINee was the first kpop group to prove that it's possible to sing live and dance complicated choreography at the same time! They trained this kind of skill by singing while trotting and running! Usually SHINee don't lip sync or hide it when they're not singing!
Taemin is my favorite solo artist, his art is insane and I'm really looking forward to his comeback after serving in the military!

so you two guys are the ones I watched commenting on Taemin's showdown with Jimin. It seemed to me that I knew you from somewhere, but I wasn't sure. When I saw that video for the first time, I was watching for Jimin. I hadn't even heard of Taemin until then, I had just entered kpop through K-drama and I liked the group 2pm and Junho, then I found out about bts, but the group wasn't that interesting (they have some good songs and choreo, but not too many ..) at that time when J-Hope and Jimin and I were looking for their solo performances. I didn't find much in that regard and it was a little disappointing, especially with the hype around them....When I watched the Showdown I saw a real Artist in front of me and that wasn't Jimin, it was a stranger named Taemin. And your reaction then (you were also taken by surprise) made me burst out laughing, because I realized that you also saw what I saw but you were verry biased for Jimin 😂 . Since then I learned a lot abt the bright and dark side of Kpop world . Anyway , I did not think that I would find the high quality standard of the golden years of pop music. But I was lucky, I found Taemin and I found SHINee

It's very uncommon for all SHINee members to use playback, they really sing live most of the times, no matter how hard the choreo is, they actually trained hard to achieve that, because they kept refusing playback. They used to train by running while singing. I'm positive he was singing live, every performance he makes the songs sound a bit different, on purpose, to give it certain personality to the songs for each concert.

I hope you two read comments. He is singing in Japanese. I am not sure how much he is actually singing. Did find out that in some places they don't allow anything but lip sync but I can assure you he can dance and sing to something like this live. A computer rated him and some other dancers for consistency and how cleanly they danced. Taemin scored 94 something. No one was close to him but JHope who scored 93 something and then Ten followed. Jimin was rated in the 70s. He is a good dancer but nowhere close to how good Taemin is. He is the best dancer in K-POP. No doubt at all and he is self taught from watching Michael Jackson. He is just a natural born dancer, gifted. He was already rated for dancing and singing and how much he could project his voice while doing so and he scored in high 80s and low 90s. He can dance and sing but sometimes it is not convenient for the venue. Sometimes he sings with tracks. I have seen him stop and talk to audiences and then start up again. I have heard his voice in concert over the mic when the music has stopped with SHINee which showed they were singing live. I have heard him sing acapella at concerts. Taemin is the best of the best. Ace of Aces and called the Michael Jackson of K-POP. He is one of a kind.
