I love your attitude and enthusiasm. A few years ago I took a two day Amtrak train ride from Denver, Colorado to San Francisco. The ride through the mountains was breathtaking. But, the train and bathrooms were filthy. I plan on visiting Chiang Mai in about a month or so. I'd like to fly one way and take the train the other way. Is there a day train? I'd like to see the countryside by train.

' I have been on three separate train rides in Thailand... Two from Bangkok to Vientien-- another one, CM. Two were in the top class and one in second class sleeper above. Top class provides a locking door., tiny toilet, & full length downstairs beds. Curious but certainly private and well worth little extra cost. And the third trip I took the top bunk because it had no joining of several different pads. Only problem with that has a little ladder going up and down was very sharp on bare feet-- toilet at the end of the car was clean... The upper bunk hadd a privacy current. No air conditioning anywhere on the train-- fans everywhere. Thailand people are very clean people, so there was roll of toilet tissue in every convenienceI visited.
I slept very well on all three routes-- swaying car and clicking click helping. Lowest class ticket is a hard nearly ventilated seat where's your be checked under sitting position forever. My three trips we're preferable to another hotel night. I just like sleeping on the train and saving the hotel money.
PS, I rode several trains in India, and regardless of the class, the toilet at the end of the car had a hole in the floor to the open track.. You have heard about it, I saw it. I always carry wipes and India needed them.

We took the same train same class from BKK to CM last two months ago. Bring your own food and drink. There is nowhere to smoke, and the windows don't open so you're breathing everyone else's air all night. Nowhere near as fun as it was in 2000 but it's inexpensive.

Not sure if they still offer it but my favorite has always been 2nd class sleeper, no AC. You do not have the freezing AC, the window opens so you go to sleep with the fresh air and sounds and smells of Thailand coming through your window all night…..magical.

@@Travelwithchris All contracts for restaurant cars in all sleeper trains in Thailand were cancelled according to train services were suspended during COVID pandemic. Since SRT did not do restaurant service by themselves when train services gradually returned back to operate early this year, all won't have restaurant cars attached until they can find new operators. Anyway, they now announce a public bidding for restaurant service in all these trains. Hopefully a service will be back on track again early next year.

Hi Chris. I just ask for a sleeper train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok but it cost like 800bath? Why is it cheaper? Did u take a different train?

I have no idea actually! I booked it online, maybe it was a special price. Not sure to be honest, i thought it was always that price!

800 baht= 22 usd. That is cheap. I thought Chris paid 30 usd for his ticket?

Honestly it doesn't make sense to take the train. A one way flight from chiang mai to bkk cost lesser than a 1st class seat, and only about $10 more exp than a 2nd class seat. The whole journey of a flight which includes to n fro form hotel, the wait at airport and the flight itself, is still about 8 hours shorter. So basically you're like changing $10 for 8h of your time which is stupid.

@@beml100 Tell me you've never taken the train before without telling me. You think that's some glacier express train shit in switzerland? Relax? Enjoy? The ride is LOUD, bumpy, unhygienic af, and there's a high chance of idiots without self-awareness talking loudly on the phone/playing music of whatever degenerate shit you can think of. This isn't a 500 euro train with views of swiss alps that is filled with mostly educated and decent people. It's a fking zoo on wheels bro.

So, how much did you give the driver to the train station? Wondering what the tipping is like... And how do you print the tickets? Where?

    • @Travelwithchris

I gave him like $15 USD, but strictly because I wanted to, he saved our train tickets lmao I don't know where I printed it lol this videos as filmed a year ago and I've been so many places since. Sorry

I love your enthusiasm in your video but I think you need to sort that camera out and put some sort of stable user on it. I felt like I was on a roller coaster.

Great presentation. Perfect information on how travel by train looks in Thailand. It serves well for long distance but for short distance, the facilities are different. You may not get the same. Please be careful.

@@Travelwithchris No,no, si no lo he visto.
