What makes Thomas Shelby’s state so powerful to me is that it’s the least obvious. He clearly has something on his mind but you’re not sure of what. He looks like he’s in complete control of the situation and doesn’t let his emotions get the better of him. His stare could also be subtle enough for others to not notice. It makes you question if you’re sane or overly paranoid. He really gets into your head.
In another comment I actually explained why what you’re stating is the case. His stare portrays no visible anger. It in fact portrays no emotion which is common in people with PTSD and sociopaths. His stare is unnerving because it shows nothing which humans automatically read as negative. Not only that but for someone to stare so blankly it means they’re so focused on what’s happening in their mind they can’t react to the outside world (except in sociopaths where it demonstrates a lack of understanding emotion). The things that Thomas is thinking of doing to who he is staring at are so vivid and horrific that he has receded completely into his mind to imagine those things.
