He's absolutely correct about becoming a chaser. I was Oregon for the eclipse this year and planning my trip to Chile next year to view another. Such a brief but profound moment has indeed changed my life.

I never considered traveling out of the country before, but after Monday in Indianapolis, I completely get it!! I hope you made it to Chile, I’m planning on Spain 2026 and Egypt 2027, totality was the most unexplainable, unworldly, ethereal experience of my entire life

@@Travis-hd9yq Oh, hey! Time sure does fly! Welcome to the totality club. Chile closed it's borders in 2020 due to COVID and I recently made it Buffalo and witnessed a cloudy eclipse. Looking forward to Portugal 2026, much less chance of clouds.

Saw my first a week ago 4/8/24. People kept saying totality is so different like something you'll never forget so opted to drive a few hrs to get in the path. I saw partiality in August 2017 and totality in April 2024 and yes literally day and night. It doesn't "get dark" it becomes night with all the sights and sounds. I was being swarmed by mosquitoes. The glow of the corona was unlike anything I've seen.

Matches my first total eclipse in 1979 when one passed through Goldendale, WA. A heavy cloud cover made it dicey, but I was able to drive until I was under almost clear skies. at the time I was 38 and totally unprepared for what I was about to experience. I was so overwhelmed that less than a year later found me in Kenya to observe my second one under very clear skies.
And, so it has gone. I've managed to see a few, but it is expensive to travel far and wide and some are not even practical....one group lead an expedition to a total solar eclipse in Antarctica in 2003 and was asking $35,000 per person to join.
This will be my 8th and the second I will see in the USA.

What David calls his "moment of awe" is an episode that Abraham Maslow would describe (as he did in 1964) as a "peak experience" -- defined by this great American psychologist as a "rare, exciting, oceanic, deeply moving, exhilarating, elevating experience that generate an advanced form of perceiving reality, and are even mystic and magical in their effect upon the experimenter" (Wikipedia). It's interesting having David Baron emphasizing that he is not a spiritual person, because indeed this kind of experience has nothing to do with religion, but may be sensed by literally anyone, according to the circumstances. It simply shows how little we know about what goes on in our unconscious.

I'm heading home to Brookings, Oregon. Then up to Newport, Oregon. I like the holiday idea, and shared awe.

It was not. Unfortunately, even 99% obscuration does not cut it. Totality means 100% coverage.
