Hermitcraft 10: Episode 13 - FIRST BASE BUILD!

- In this episode of Hermitcraft Season 10, Mumbo works on the first build in his survival mega base! This detailed Minecraft shop build was first designed in Procreate as a Minecraft concept art, then built on the Hermitcraft server. This build is the first of many for my Minecraft survival mega base.

Very minor detail, but I think it'd be fun if the falling "o" in the Big Ron's sign was not glowing so it'd look like the light in the sign broke.
I think that would work very well! Good idea! Hope he sees this ;)
yea, had the same thought
Anyone else thinking about big eye Ron's from season 8 😂
i thought the same!
This is such a good idea!
Brilliant front.
No interior
No back.
Mumbo is becoming Grian.
Hide the buttons and doors
True 🤣
He somehow nailed Bdubs build style on this build. Which out of all the hermits, Mumbo was the last one I would ever have expected to do, AND its one of his first attempts!
well i mean he did use to say "why cant i be grian"
And grian does a bit of redstone. Concerning...
I feel like you need to capture a pillager and put him in the store to be Ron. I imagine Ron to be rather cranky, and I think those pillager noises would be perfect :)
It takes a bit of time, but all you have to do is wait until an archer's crossbow breaks, and they become harmless.
this!!!
absolutely!
Harmless other than minor tax fraud
Make it a NitWit
I imagined Ron more as a friendly old community man
Mumbo is explaining his design for the build but I have to watch it again because all I could focus on was the "Art Mode" screensaver (which is just 😙👌)
I agree❤ (perfection)👌👍
i was waiting for it to hit the corner lolol
I loved how it hit the corner perfectly 🥰

I literally wanna know what program that he uses to make that art
I love the way that mumbo (a suit wearing man) is always surprised that he is sold out and is becoming rich! Lol, shows his history in hermitcraft
this is really a new thing for him
I think he’s one of the most successful shop owners right now
I can't remember who said it, probably Grian, but Mumbo "exudes poverty"
Potatoes can’t break his season 10 shops
Given Mumbo created what is almost definitely the least successful shop in Hermitcraft history, I'd say he has a right to be shocked
peak hermitcraft is how _every single one of them_ reacted to the news of their mail system being installed with "great! now i can spam!"
Or how most of them wants to spam Joel with neck kisses 😂😂😂😂
My favourite is when they get their bundle of stamps and just spew them out
honestly they all have the same braincell, just in different directions
There is something glorious about living in an era where "slightly old, faded technology shop" is not just a concept of the far future, but is actually a thing that we just know about in real life. Even if many probably got a start as an electronics repair place, the fact that "old, faded computer repair/supply shop" is a thing that makes sense as being and feeling "old and rundown" says a lot about how far computers have come.
That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking. “Old computer shop” sounds like an oxymoron, but it really isn’t anymore
@@JediMaestr0 Shhh, you're making me feel old.
@@grn1 There are probably some kids watching this who have never seen a flip phone!! Just had this realisation and if I am cursing yall with the knowledge as well
@@thelesbeean3810 Darn you.... I got my first phone in high school, a flip/feature phone that wasn't really mine but something for us kids (at the time) to use. Sometime later I had a government issued track phone (we weren't the richest of folks) then later after that I got a Lotus (which I actually loved, didn't care that it was purple and had flowers on it (I'm a guy and generally don't care for that stuff)). My family was quite late to the smart phone game not buying any until probably around a decade ago. In my case it was a Galaxy J7 (not S, J) then I had a Oneplus 7T Pro for a while and most recently upgraded to a Pixel 8 Pro (the port on the 7T was basically dead and the battery life wasn't holding up so well either, the Pixel has wireless charging so I can still use it if the port dies and it has minimal bloat unlike the ever popular Samsung phones).
I also still remember floppy disk though they were a dying breed by the time we got our first computer (which we connected to the internet with dial up). Still remember having to diagnose a malfunctioning floppy drive while also missing my library card (we had toddlers in the house). Haven't been to a library in quite a while (aside from a short visit to get some free eclipse shades).
Anyone remember the old Toonami days (when it was prime time)?
I'm so glad that the ART MODE sign got the corner, it made my day.

The Art Mode, the business card, the story and the build details... You're literally having fun and I'm so genuinely happy for you.
no its actually so fun to watch you do this new stuff
Genuinely screamed when the Art Mode hit the corner

I literally wanna know what program that he uses to make that art
Mumbo absolutely KILLED it with the isometric art. That thing looks AMAZING
I'd love to see Scar's reaction to Big Ron's redstone shop. The environmental storytelling is fantastic with the upside down boxes and the sign falling down and everything
Also, I love seeing Mumbo's build process unfold. For us technical types, getting into creative building can seem overwhelming. Seeing that we're not alone in that feeling and seeing the "figuring it out" steps Mumbo goes through is really motivating and shows that anyone can learn how to build with the best, it just takes time and experimentation
“It’s doing well as a business.” When it was just Etho buying everything LOL
Lol Etho definitely doesn’t have a shopping addiction…
Never , nun, nu uh , nada.@@jayu_91
Still doing well as a business, just means he only needs to focus on one deep pocket hermit to keep in business.
Sometimes a single, reliable customer is what you want.
@@jayu_91 in fairness... etho does have a shopping addiction and this is like one of the few... when one factors in all the materials needed to construct the postal service & etho liking to have at least like 3 stacks spare of any block in his ender shest/shulker box system... plus the fact he's not built a gold farm yet this season... 9 stacks of gold blocks for 27 diamonds was legit a crazy good deal given what he will use it to craft...
he has froglight diamonds which IMO is one of the better & honestly easiest permits - nether roof froglight farms are cracked especially if kept loaded - i removed frogs from mine to get it closer to hopper speed ( 4 of each instead of the original 6 because hopper speed is what 9k/hr? and even factoring in magma cream it's like the ianxofour shulker farm built in spawn chunks.... not the fastest - but it just accumulates so quickly to where a double chest of shulkers of each color fills shockingly quick)
basically in terms of mining etho realized between "Oh i need gold" -> "oh snap im buying it out" - the price was 1/3'rd of a diamond per stack of gold ingots... with no gold farm and needing gold for crafting powered rails or whatever... one can mine 27 diamonds in like 15 min with fortune 3 in 1.20.4 lol ..... 3 shulkers of gold ingots takes a lot more time.
I absolutely love how Mumbo went from "Clean and flush design"
to "Let's try gradients"
to "This 4x4 wall needs at least 15 different block types."
With all the excitement in between, that journey is just so pure and wholesome
he's evolving
well he went from noisy textured patterns to gradients. but now he's experimenting with more different looking blocks. personally I find the build to be a little too noisy with color pallete. and could be made better with different block choices or just less noisyness and more flush areas. more deliberateness. but there's also some charm in his style learning from all the other hermits trying to imitate them to make better builds. Edit: typo
Yea, you can see the inspo from bdubs
@@mz-power9587 I personnally love the noisiness because it makes the build look even more run-down and realistic.
@@Me-da-Ghost and fair enough. I personally would go for a different approach in the build to try and get the same vibes but more in my style. Trying to use my admittedly amateur color theory knowledge. Though one thing is his build that actively bugs me is the windows. The difference in depth is just too drastic. I would have just gone for a few missing glass panes. Or maybe some stained glass mixed in to make it look cloudy and dirty. I think that complaint has more to do with “ocd”. Also glass thinning over time like that isn’t really a thing. Edit: also I just want to make clear there’s no hate at all here. Just some critical analysis. All that matters is mumbo having fun creating content and us enjoying to watch it. The fun he is having really shows
Ron's been in business so long that he still remembers " 'Ello, everyone, this is Mumbo here!"
I know it might not be as satisfying as a timelapse, but I really do like mumbos approach to authentically showing the building process and talking through it. It feels more honest to the amount of work that gets put in, building something now takes a whole episode now instead of 60 seconds and I think it’s really cool.
ok but Mumbo is actually unreal at drawing/painting
IK WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABT HOW CRAZY GOOD THE CONCEPT ART FOR THIS ONE WAS I WAS GOBSMACKED
Because no one wanted to jinx it, an artist is very easily jinxed out of making art anymore
I was just thinking this lmao. I've worked in graphic design for a few years and this is nearly professional concept art
@nebuny I JUST WANNA KNOW WHAT PROGRAM HE'S USING TO MAKE HIS MODEL. ALSO, WHY ARE WE YELLING?!
Yeah, as an artist (hobbyist, not professional) I was genuinely super impressed.
If Big Ron is using standard sized business cards, his coffee mug has to be tiny to have left those stains. I love the idea that he actually is huge but uses a teeny tiny coffee mug.
Big Ron is Big into espresso shots
Or he uses really big business cards because he’s Big Ron
Big Ron drinks his coffee in a shotglass
I feel like it's the perfect size for the bottom of one of those IKEA coffee mugs, maybe ODEA sells some similar.
Or what if the nickname is ironic and he’s actually quite small so he uses a little espresso mug for his coffee.
Mr Mumbo "now, I'm not a builder" Jumbo, i gotta say you're absolutley doing bits rn. i have genuinely learned a couple of things from big ron's that i'm gonna use
also i loved the business card! each shop with it's own little card, or poster would be so cool. something that sells the story of their personality that bit more
These are the most fun types of builds IMO. I grew up in the 80s and 90s and this is such a great representation of those dirty little tech shops.

Seriously, I've seen others like Grian make "concept arts" of what they want to do, but never have I seen someone do it so much more practical than Mumbo before. He never forgot that Minecraft is a block-game, so he made it isometrical, which means he can stick to his concept way better than if he had made some pretty painting full of curves.
Anyone know the program he used?
I believe in a previous video he used procreate
@@jnmaietta I don't think he used anything special. With some patience, you can achieve this result on Photoshop, Illustrator or GIMP, etc.
Just have to use straight lines and add colors on a different layer. The fact that the colors are bleeding over the edges of the drawing shows that it's less likely to be a super special software uniquely made FOR this type of drawing, and it would make me think more of a free-hand software like Photoshop rather than a more vectorial software like Illustrator, for example.
*EDIT :* I should've seen how Mumbo indicated Procreate in the description. That makes more sense.
@@jnmaietta as others have suggested, yes it's procreate, as listed in the description :)

Big Ron is the person you take your laptop to when it's decided to bluescreen right before you have to turn in a big presentation after getting 3 viruses that made it past the anti-virus protection. Rather than stressing when you don't like something, you're using it as a chance to try something new, and your enjoyment of the process is really coming across. I'm glad it seems like you've managed to find your passion again after your break
I don't usually comment on anything and there's literally no way you're going to see this, but Mumbo, your concept art is immaculate. As an artist who struggles to draw backgrounds, it is actually so amazing to me that you've just done that. It is genuinely *so* good I cannot stress it enough. I love the colours and all the texture that was put in to such a simple drawing. The lines are completely straight (as I'm assuming you likely used a tool), and yet the fact that they overlap and continue at certain points where they shouldn't somehow adds so much more character to it. It looks amazing and I hope to see more concept art-type stuff because WOW. It's messy in the beautiful kind of way, and it's your's. :D
16:44 - Never knew about GSM, but in summary its:
GSM stands for 'grams per square metre' and refers to the weight of the paper. The heavier the paper, the higher the number of grams per square metre - and, generally, the higher the perceived quality of the stock. This is sometimes referred to as the paper's 'grammage'.
Source for the internet, copied and pasted.
Thank you Mumbo for teaching me something new today :D
Following from this. If it's low, it your typical tracing paper and classic A4 and the higher it is, it things like crafting paper and business cards
To be fair, GSM is a lot more logical than the American standard of paper weight, which is just "pounds" (of what? copy paper is typically rated as "20lb", but _how many sheets_ makes that up? and what size, legal, 8.5x11, something else?). Having the weight be that of "one square meter" of paper is unambiguous.
Most traditional artists will also be able to tell you about paper weight because it matters hugely to the type of medium they use, whether it’s watercolour or acrylic paint. Paper can also come in gloss or textured finishes. The more you know!
I love this episode so much. The WORK, the BACKSTORY, the GIDDINESS. Just wonderful vibes

this episode is full of great jokes and puns and wordplay. and incredible art + builds. well done mumbo!!
So I want to comment on the genius of the Business card.
Ultimately a building is made up by a bunch of factors. And one of those factors is the owner. Yeah leaving boxes outside is one thing... but by designing the business card you had a very VERY clear idea of who Ron was. And that lead you to decide to do the 1.25 blocks on the roof as Big Ron isn't going to pay to repair his roof, and likely contributed to the O falling down from the sign.
The concept art shaped the idea of a shop.... the business card shaped the owner, which in turn shaped the shop more.
The tribute to Bob Ross is perfect, years ago in a live stream you wondered how 50% of your viewers don't play MC. It is the same as the people watching Bob that don't paint.
having just enjoyed watching the VODs of those livestreams many years after they were streamed, i 100% agree
Oh so Big Ron’s is Bob Ross… idk how mumbo managed to sneak this one by me ngl
I love the theme of Big Ron’s. A very wholesome and nostalgic type of store.

Did anyone else notice Mumbo lingering on the “do not leave outside” box when talking, as if asking us to notice his funny jokey detail without having to explain the joke (since that makes it less funny)
I am convinced "BIG RON'S" was once called "BIG IRON'S" and only sold irons for the first couple decades - but then, as technology advanced got more and more stock of other items.
new headcanon: Big Iron was actually Big Ron's grandpa, and the store used to sell cast iron household appliances (I'm thinking coffee grinders, dutch ovens, etc) and then ron inherited the store and updated it to more modern electronics
@@catboygremlin Thats even better!
