- packing up my entire apartment and staying in a hotel! in this nyc vlog spend a few days in my life with me as chaos unfolds and my apartment gets fumigated. not the best circumstances, but come along with bennett and i as we do a little staycation in new york city and deal with my current bug situation.

5 min in and thank you for being vulnerable enough to talk about this. I have been going through a similar situation this winter and have had to pack up my apt 3 times so far (fingers crossed it’s done). I totally relate to the overwhelmed feelings of the prep involved! ❤

Damn, sometimes the universe really just throws EVERYTHING at you at once and makes you do a FULL reset. I 100% feel you on this being my literal worst nightmare. Sending you endless love as you navigate this crap. Hopefully it’ll ALL be over soon!!💗💗

Oh I am so sorry you are going through this.... and yay Bennett and Emily MVPs.... I went through this when I lived in NYC and I recall having to wash everything before and after fumigation... Fresh starts! You are making the best out of it and so glad you blogged it. This is NYC on the real! :)

Sorry about the fumigation and all that goes with that.
As far as Bennett and traveling, cats are territorial and like routine. When you take them out of their 'safe place' they get stressed. When you travel with them, same thing, stressed. And once they are adults, unless they are raised with other cats, they don't like to be around other cats. Again, territorial and very stressful for them. I've had cats all my life and right now have 3. The best thing for Bennett is to keep him at home, and have others come in to care for him if you need to be away. I know this time couldn't be avoided, but I'm sure you want what's best for him. Hope your apartment if bug free now. HUGS!

Oh man! That sucked! But thank you for sharing all aspects with us, even the not-so-fun parts! Also Bennett is adorable! I used to travel with my male cat, when I was young and single lol, he was my world, and a great travel companion. It does suck about them getting litter everywhere at hotels and stuff, but you have to maybe put a mat or a towel or something down underneath the disposable litter box...

New subscriber here! I know you’re past this crazy time but just wanna let you know I also had a bed bug issue during this time. Never got bit but we found a few lives ones throughout the apartment. The exterminator came and sprayed but we never needed to get fumigated. Only the apartments that were infested. I can’t believe they made you fumigate without even checking for bugs!! But better safe than sorry - I’m glad this crazy time is over for you! ❤️
I'm sorry you've had to deal with that. Your stress is understandable. I would be freaking out. I'm sure it's hard to live in that chaos for a week.
This would be a good opportunity to make organize with me content and to put the whole place back together or a spring cleaning

I’ve had them in 2013. I think in total there were three treatments (to catch the egg cycles). The prep was a nightmare (clothes, bedding, curtains all had to be washed, dryed & bagged), everything off the walls. The exterminators drilled small holes at the bottom of the walls in each room & shot in diatomaceous earth which dries out the bugs’ exoskeleton and then they die. It worked but I was too freaked out over the whole thing so my lease was up in a couple months anyway so I was out there after that. My arms looked like I had pink polka dots on them which were the bites.
City living, apartment living- bugs happen. I went through it with an 87 year old relative who brought the bugs home from some place that they visited.

Get your encasement plastic sheets for box spring and bed now.Put multiple sheets down.
Sorry you're going through a crappy time, but you're dealing with this so well, and shout out to Emily for being a great friend. You should take some trips with Bennett, could you look into housesitting maybe as an affordable way to get away for a week or two?

I had them years ago. I’m spotless, so people were shocked that I had them. They don’t discriminate. They leave little black marks (like if you dabbed your sheets with permanent marker). They can go two years without a meal. We are sure I got mine from a moving truck with the blankets they provide for padding. Sorry girl. It is stressful.

I had bedbugs:( I threw away almost everything I own and moved.... then I fumigated my new place with all my things. Also you have to wash your clothes all of them even the ones you don't wear at a certain temperature to kill them.not to make things worse... but it's a big process to get rid of them for good:( I'm so sorry this is happening... it's part of living in an apartment with others living there cuz you can't control how your neighbors live.
I'm pretty sure by NYC law your landlord is supposed to take care of this.Usually multiple apartments are done at the same time.
Listen. I had bedbugs a year ago. I threw out almost everything and ended up moving. Awful. 😢 Hopefully you will be over it soon.
I am in pest control. Bed bugs can hide & you won’t see. It’s best to get it done. Better safe than sorry. I’ve stayed in that hotel. It’s awesome.

I could tell from the way you packed your stuff it was bed bugs. I've been there and done that and it was the most hellish things I ever went through, and it was weeks long, and expensive as hell. I've been paranoid ever since.

Bed bugs is definitely a normal thing. Back in 2020 I was waking up in the mornings with welts on my arms that I couldn't trace until I finally saw a bug after about two weeks. My family's house was on the market and they had literally accepted an offer the day before. It was a nightmare to pack up the entire house (5 adults' worth of everything) in one weekend. The exterminator that treated the house believed that the bed bugs ended up in my room during a showing when someone set down a purse/jacket/etc. Thankfully the buyer was super understanding and still closed on the house a month later. It's rough during the process but I promise it will get better in the aftermath. Hopefully everything will be over as soon as possible so that you can return to your normal activities❤

Ah....I'm sorry for this. I've been thru it. It's so stressful. Sometimes your lease company will pay for extermination. Just a thought. Bennett really is being a gem. My cat would be puking everywhere.

I'm familiar with services that bring a beagle stiffer dog. Sounds like you're paying for this yourself. If you have bugs likely other apts may also. Landlord should pay for all of this.

Please tell me they heated your home on order to rid the bed bugs! I went through this and the only way to get rid of them is by dehydrating them with heat! Lol something like that don’t come for my science I just remember our house felt like we were in hell after it was sooooo warm … This kills the eggs and living bugs! You can get a bedbug anywhere . Make sure you check your cat they get on pets too

Sounds like an overly cautious response to the situation but honestly I would’ve done the same thing. One bug can turn into 100 in the blink of an eye. At least now you can rest assured knowing you did everything you could’ve done. You did a great job.

Hi Alexis. I've been thru this with roaches. My landlord hired an exterminator and I think your landlord should have done the same. I'm so sorry you had to go thru all these but like you said it's more common than ppl think. I was told to get a spray bottle pour rubbing alcohol and spray your bed every time you change your sheets/also spray under sink areas and that will keep the bugs away/ kill them.
I've been doing that and I think it works. And BTW Bennett is so so cute 😺.

Hate to say this since you’ve already been through it- but he could have been scamming you. I’d want a second opinion if this happens again. He didn’t even look? Just seems super odd

Yeah, it's definitely a scam. No reputable exterminator would recommend a full fumigation without even looking around the apartment...
Do yourself a favor and unpack your stuff, and dont let those exterminators back in your apartment.
Scam or not, you also have the right to consent to stuff like this in your apartment. You don’t have to agree with the recommendation if you think it seems silly to fumigate for one bedbug with no evidence of infestation. Of course, we don’t know all the info. If this was your building’s exterminator and your landlord wants this to happen to be proactive to make sure nothing spreads to other apartments, then it might make more sense.
If you cannot smell anything, that’s your tell tells sign right there! Get a second opinion and ask the landlord about recommendations for fumigation. They may fumigate it instead.
So what is keeping your neighbors bugs from coming for a visit. Seems like a never ending battle.

It would be such a waste to get rid of everything when washing them in high temperature kills the bugs.

A little perspective, imagine if you were going through the bug thing, while also working a full time job with kids? You’re blessed beyond belief to be in the situation that you are so try to focus on that and it’ll make life’s issues way easier to handle.
