  • Join us for a whole month in South Africa's Kruger National Park as we travel from the south to the far north and back again staying at ten different rest camps. Stunning scenery, amazing animals, beautiful birds and excellent accomodation, the Kruger has it all.
In this first episode we travel right across South Africa from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park to enter the Kruger at Malelane gate and then make our way to our first camp, Crocodile Bridge.

@@oldcodgerwithacamera I could not even understand how steenbok became steelwork but it is the highlighted word. However after many more than 100 trips to kruger I have never seen 2 together and I know that once they mate, they separate again. My favourite camps are Shimuweni and Mbyamiti. Feeling homesick now as we were in South Africa for 40 years and now had to return to UK after retiring and we did not have medical aid any more. Looking forward to the next trip. 😀

Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it. We were given two further temporary permits which I gather was not strictly legal but we weren't likely to be stopped in the park anyway. Thankfully we were not stopped on the way back to the airport.

I sincerely enjoy every chapter of your Kruger adventures. I cant stop watching it. I hope in the future you will also rate Mopani Rest Camp in the North of the Park. We stayed there for a few days now in December. Its a beautiful camp. I was one morning very surprised to see a cheetah not far from the main camp gate. I have never ever seen a cheetah on visits in Kruger! Not even in the South! With this trip i realized... I like the north of the Park the most...Thank you for all your beautiful videos and that you share it with the whole world. Its very special.

Many thanks for your kind words. We have been to Mopani before and really enjoyed it but our next trip doesn't include Mopani. It was a toss up between Mopani and Letaba and we decided on the latter. Glad you saw a cheetah, didn't see a single one on our last trip despite seeing several on previous trips. Luck of the draw I suspect. Hoping to feature cheetahs in the next videos!

Hi, I just discovered your video's of " A month in the Kruger" and i must say i'm very impressed.I love the way you edit your images, and enjoy very much the music. Could you tell me which software you are using ? The music i can easily find through Shazam. I've been editing for some time now using Pinnacle Studio and since I'am retired I spend more time learning how to use it properly, and it is such fun. We are going to South Africa next february/march, starting with Kruger and going to the Cape and Karroo afterwards. Looking very much forward to that. Anyway thanks a lot for posting we are enjoying every minute of it.

Many thanks for your comments, they are much appreciated. I use Adobe Premiere Pro but you could certainly get the same results with DaVinci Resolve which is free. I have no experience with Pinnacle Studio so can't comment on how that compares. The music is from Epidemic Sound which requires an annual subscription but has an extensive catalogue. Music is one of the most difficult aspects of the videos and takes ages to source and then trim to the visuals. RUclips has a free music library but the choice is rather limited and becomes obviously repetitive after a while. We are also going back to the Kgalagadi and Kruger next February / March so we may well cross paths without ever knowing!

Wonderful video! I haven't been to South Africa in twenty years, but am longing back when I see your video. Wasn't the first place you stayed a bit of a detour? A nice police man in the end. I entered The Kruger from the Malelane gate as well the first time I was there. I have now seen two of your Kruger videos, and they are great! Keep up the good work! 🙂

Many thanks, I really appreciate your comments. Going via the border Hotel only adds about 30 miles to the more direct route but it was such a wonderful place when we stopped on the way from Johannesburg to the Kgalagadi that we wanted to go back there. In the final video I say that we wouldn't be back for 18 months but working on the videos made me long to go back as well, so we are now booked again for next February1

Hi, just binged watched your Kgalagadi trip videos - wonderful insight into what to expect when there. We've been to Kruger a number of times, last trip was back in December 2018. I was interested to hear that you lower the tyre pressures as I've never considered this when driving in Kruger. What pressure do you drop to (1.5 bar ?) and how is it driving on the tar roads with 'soft' tyres ? Would you advise this for a 2 x 4 SUV vehicle as we wont have a 4x4 in Kruger ? Did you have a 4x4 ? Were lined up for a Kruger / Kgalagadi trip in October / November this year - can't wait and am binging on as much info / advice as I can get.
    Great videos, thanks a lot😃😃😃

When we first went to the Kruger back in 2017 we took a private guided tour and the first thing the guide did when we reached the Kruger was to let down the tires so we've been doing it ever since. We usually drop the pressure to 1.6 bar which makes the ride on some of the corrugated roads a little softer. Because the speed limit is 50kph on the tar roads it doesn't make much difference on those roads. It doesn't really matter whether you have a 4x4, in fact we have never hired a 4x4 even in the Kgalagadi. To be honest you don't really need to drop the pressure in the Kruger but it does make a difference when you hit badly corrugated roads. Hope you have a great time later this year, it looks like our next trip will now be next year. Thanks for watching he videos.

Why the long road to the Kruger? The best is N 14 from Upington to Pretoria N 1 then onto N4 to Malelane Gate............1 1/2 day!

    • @oldcodgerwithacamera
      @oldcodgerwithacamera  Год назад +1

Yes, that is shorter/quicker but not by much. My satnav shows 901 miles from Twee Rivieren to Malalane by the route suggested and 958 miles by the route we took so probably just an hour quicker. The reason we went the way we did is that we wanted to stop at the Border Hotel in Jan Kempdorp. We could have done that with a detour there and back from Vryburg but that would have then made that route 1,000 miles. As I said at the beginning we were happy to take it easy and didn't want to rush on the second day to get there before gate closing time. Back in 2017 we had a 4 hour delay on the N4 due to an accident and didn't want to risk a repeat. Thanks for watching and for your suggestion, we will most probably go (partly) that way next year as we are going through Phalaborwa gate.

Thanks. The invoice you see was for the two weeks to the end of May. We had to book June seperately as the bookings were only available up to end of May when we planned the trip. Bear in mind we didn't necessarily stay in the cheapest accomodation.

Hello. I have a question. I'm thinking of going to Kruger for a month also. How did you divide the day's among the camps. So how long on what camp. Wil you maybe share you're route with me? I find it a bit difficult. Want to see the whole park. Thanks in advance!😊

On this trip we entered at Malelane gate and made our way north and then back again to exit at Malelane. Our itinerary was
      Crocodile Brigde - 2 nights
      Lower Sabie - 3 nights
      Satara - 4 nights
      Shingwedzi - 3 nights
      Punda Maria - 3 nights
      Shimuwini - 2 nights
      Talamati - 2 nights
      Skukuza - 2 nights
      Lower Sabie - 3 nights
      Pretoriuskop - 3 nights
      Berg-en-dal - 3 nights
That was quite a lot of driving and moving between camps. If you want to spend more time at each camp or take in the other camps like Mopani, Letaba and Olifants a better idea would be to enter at Punda Maria Gate and just drive south to exit at Malelane or Crocodile Bridge.
There are so many options and it is difficult to give an 'ideal' itinerary. Sightings change from day to day and you might see more by staying longer at each camp (or it might be the other way round!)

@oldcodgerwithacamera thanks! I'm not sure yet if it's possible (financially 😅) but it's a dream. I'm not sure if I want to drive more or that I want to stay longer on 1 camp. I like to go to different camps... You're answer helped. Thanks
