A keen interest in the hobby would make this book far more enjoyable, it’s a ginormous universe.
It’s a book you read when you want to know what’s going on in the universe, an in depth knowledge of the heresy and current state of the chapters and primarch(s) makes it a far more accessible read as you’re diving into a huge library of lore that’s been redacted and changed over the years. It’s no Hemingway but I will say it’s a good book to enter into the hobby on as it’s set in the 41st millennium and tells you what’s going on in the universe currently from the viewpoint of the mind running the imperium

Totally, I agree. Even playing Space Marine 2 I felt like I understood the state of the Galaxy a little better. And if you’re just trying to understand the state of the universe and where they are going with everything it’s not a bad jumping off point, but I do think about half the fans would do better just to get a summary of it because on its own it doesn’t deliver on its own narrative like I’m sure some other 40K novels do.

Sadly Warhammer is a table top game first and everything else second. Dark Imperium was published in the same year the Death Guard models were released, so they had to be the villains of the book, even if it made very little sense.

Yeah exactly, I feel like the less important character books probably have more freedom because they aren’t as tied to the table top game.

Please tell me you're reading the full trilogy? The 1st book is the weakest of the 3 and it really builds with the sequels.

Honestly I’m gonna move on to other stuff. Probably going to read Eisenhorn next.
