I feel like you have to give the story a break for MMOs. You have to remember there is a lot more work put in terms of gameplay, market, glamour, housing, etc. Plus you are in a game with millions of other people interacting, playing and doing all sorts of wacky shenanigans. They don’t just do dungeons but ocean fishing, golden saucer, trials, pvp and more. With all of that you can’t really expect too much out of the story as that’s not necessarily the main focus.

I know I’m late to this one but I tried ff14, I reached almost level 30 and just stopped it just wasn’t gripping me like ESO did and just went back, I felt like the missions were designed a lot better in ESO, and completing 100hours just for it to get “good” just wasn’t okay for me…I mean the carbuncle summon was okay I guess.. the arcanist class just didn’t impress me… just my opinion on the game

you make a lot of fair points, and you stuck with the game far longer than most. its nice to see a reasonable discussion on this topic. if you're still looking for a game with both good story and good gameplay, then i'd highly recommend trying Warframe. Maybe you've already heard of it, but I can guarantee it's not what you expect and it will repeatedly surprise you.

Your reasoning for quitting is completely valid. I love FFXIV, but you need to get through 200 hours worth of cutscenes just to get to the content. I did it and liked it, but thats pretty wild to expect new players to sit through that like i did. The story is pretty good IMO, but at the end of the day its an MMO Story and it sometimes its lackluster. Glad you gave it a chance, though!

For me, level-scaling is even worse from a story and world-building perspective than gameplay perspective. Imagine if Diablo 2 was designed like this. In that case, all acts might be immediately open but the inner depths of hell in Act 4 would not be substantially more dangerous than the grassy plains outside the rogue encampment in Act 1. All areas would only be as safe or as dangerous as your character level. That reeks of a lack of well-conceived world-building if the danger or safety of the world mysteriously changes as you level up for reasons that seem completely divorced from the story being told.

How much did Bethesda pay you? I know this game ain't perfect but it sure is better than starfield, amazing graphics, 18 quintillion randomly generated planets, ship customization was recently added, 0 loading screen when landing or leaving a planet, multiplayer with 32 player lobbies, amazing and limitless base building, a lot of vehicle types to travel around planets quickly, minotaure, although I agree that the gunfights might need some work, this game is significantly better in some aspects

Can save money for other stuff in life and focus on irl stuff.

Played FFXIV since ARR back at 2013 until Endwalker patch 6.1 and have no plans for return until they make bold gameplay changes. What has been killed FFXIV for me is the homogenization and dumbing down of jobs. For me Heavensward was peak gameplay, the rotations felt rewarding, tanks and healers felt unique. For me Stormblood was when the game start to go downhill. Butchering tanks and healers (DRK lost many of the HW skills for example), strange decisions such as Riddle of Fire making MNK's weapon skill slow and so on with other Jobs. While the story is "good" , I got tired of SE resurrecting characters because of popularity, Gaius, Zenos etc. and let's not talk about the whole Meteion thing.

I played my first Final Fantasy (6) when I was 7 in 1994. I am 37 now and am still very much enamored with the FF series. I tried getting my nephew into it, but he didn't like it.

Comments like "You don't like world-building" are very goofy criticisms and you shouldn't even humor them with a response. But yeah one of the things that entertains me about the community is the imagination of some of them projecting actions or emotions on the completely vapid WoL. People saying things like "Oh my WoL did this" or "My WoL thought this," and meanwhile I'm thinking "My WoL just stood there watching this happen and did nothing." 😂 But I'll give the devs credit, a lot of dialogue responses they've given us in more recent content feels like we've been able to give our player character at least a little personality here and there.

I loved Shadowbringers, but I did feel like this when Stormblood launched and nearly all through out Endwalker eh. I hope Dawntrail brings back that magic it once had for me, if not, still the glamor, leveling, other activities keep me invested.

You and I have the exact same experience. I played through the end of shadowbringers ~400 hours and just failed to see what all of the fuss was about. It's not that it's a bad game, it's just nowhere near fun enough to justify the amount of time it requires from you.

This game has at least 100 flaws. I only keep playing it for the completionist and battle content. Haven't cared about the story since Heavensward. Haven't cared about the lore since I started playing. Day 1 of a new expansion I skip every single cutscene just to get to the end, so I can start doing what I like in the game. For me it's worth it but likely not for everyone. It is too much walk and talk all the time and not enough action, which is why most new players don't even make it to the end.

It's a flawed game, I think it relies to much on its story content for a MMORPG. The story is not the best, and it's bloated. I've recruited 3 friends to come play and 0 of the 3 have finished the games story and most have found more fun in side activities like leveling other jobs, and crafts. All 3 are no longer playing the game, and I think that shows signs the game has problems keeping new players. I still enjoy the game, but I can at least understand the story has gone to far, and gotten to bloated.

In 15, at the very last chapter it takes place about 15 years in to the future and the characters are over 30 by that point, complete with a beard and I was eating that shit up. I loved Clive, I have been a FF fanatic since 99 and he is my all time fav character. I'm all for more characters over 25 please.

I'm nearly at the end of EW and I've done like 2 dungeons and a trial, this entire fucking game is nothing but talking to NPCs as far as the MSQ goes, sure there's other stuff to do but I think the MSQ is pretentious filler crap, I doubt Dawn trail will deviate from that shitty fucking formula, Ive read every like or dialogue and I just got the point where the game is pissing me off making me read dialogue through these fucking retarded characters I couldn't give two fucks about, Endwalker for me is just as bad as ARR, shadowbringers was the only decent MSQ expansion, I don't get how everyone praises this game? They release an expansion with the laziest game design every cause let's be honest, if you're a casual you're gonna spend 99% of your time clicking on NPCs and then run into a stupid purple circle to fight enemies that literally can't hurt you, wow such fun. Fuck this game, I'm gonna beat it because I have too after coming this far but unless Dawn trail shakes it up, I'll probably quit too

I was able to figure out how to switch to retro vs Xbox controller by input however I set the “Retriod pocket controller” as my controller but none of the controls are working when I play a game. Apparently, I would need to setup the profile for each controller mode as each controller has a driver built into Retroids OS. I see the profiles options but how do I set up the profile Xbox vs Retriod?
