I second both of these suggestions.
I feel like it would be a great idea to add “Madi Makes” to the channel because it feels like Clever is ready to move on to bigger builds that take more time. So, she’ll get more crafting time and he’ll feel less pressure to rush his makes. They could alternate weeks or have Madi to a takeover once a month- whichever best suits their schedules

Madi, try using the book cloth strips to cover the gaps between front/back covers and spine. Then apply your end papers. This will reinforce the end papers at the hinge points between spine and covers.

as for the spine of your books, there are 2 ways you can go. firstly, the thicker the material, the more narrow you should cut it. I don't mean take loads off, but it should only just cover the spine, otherwise your hinge gaps are pretty useless. this also give you the added benefit of books that lay flat and not curved when you open them. second option is to not use a base board there at all, but instead you put a strip of leather/ faux leather on the inside as reinforcement. this gives the spine a much softer ability to move and also give you the lay flat ability. I have successfully used both methods for over 30 years of book binding. on another note, you should make sure that the hinge cloth (the cloth that goes over the spine and attaches to the first and last page before your end pages -you really should be doing this and not just putting it on the spine) is an undyed natural fibre, such as linen or cotton, otherwise it can stain the papers, and some poly materials can even wear through the pages.
Love seeing Madi on the channel again, and this was a great topic. I’m quite interested in bookbinding and for some reason, never thought of just…. Making book blanks over and over until I’m comfortable with them. 😂

As someone who book binds as a hobby. I would highly recommend making a book press, it just makes everything easier. Secondly, you need to round the spine and trime the overhange. This is done easily with a rubber mallet. Thirdly yeah the contact cement was a no go, you need the longer cure time to make last minute adjustments, and if you lock it in your book press it will be more uniform. Cheers.

So awesome!!! Bookbinding is definitely something I intend to try more of. It really is “simple” materials-wise, and one of those crafts that can just become a regular activity!
I've been trying to collect tools and materials for book binding for a little bit now. A channel I'll recommend is "four keys book arts" he does a good job explaining things. And Madi, the reason your book spines are stiff is cause you didn't break them.
Ok. Now I REALLY want to try making my own Myst Linking Books with these techniques. Thanks!

Not bad for early bookbinding.
Take note though of materials. You used neutral-pH PVA, but then used Barge and random chipboard that probably isn't acid-free, defeating the purpose.

I've been working on my own book binding, thanks to you, Maddie. I sawed two pieces of spare particle board to the same size. I'm using 8.5 x 14 I accidentally bought. I have a couple of clamps that I used to press the pages. A pocketknife to make the holes for the stitches.
I wasn't sure what I was going to use for the thread, until I found my embroidery floss. I just finished the stitches and have an unbound book. I just have to figure out how to put a cover on it. I'm thinking Shoe Goo I have. Maybe an empty cereal box and some leather I have for the cover.
I'm also planning on making the shoes too.
This is a skill I was learning for a LARP a few years back and I didn't even get that advanced. My sage at a post apocalyptic LARP didn't need to be fancy though so I skipped a lot of steps and it came out genre appropriate.
I'm going to be stepping up my game for the one I do now and making stuff around the same quality as your finished product for a different game and this is an excellent tutorial on everything start to finish, especially calling out mistakes you can easily make (and some you did make) which is always helpful. Great job!

Book binding has always been something that i've wanted to get into for a long time. Thank yo for showing a easy way to do booking binding in an entertaining and straight forward way.
Also, i love books that are rough and with uneven edges, usually with that woven hard cover.
Just to share, I started with a cost saving trick because I didn't have a patience to wait to get the "right" stuff. Instead of the waxed thread, I started using dental floss, it is waxed, very strong (try breaking some) and much cheaper than any other thread I could find. At $.97 for 50 yards it kinda hard to beat plus it is nearly invisible in the final book.

Oh, that is a neat trick for stealthy seams.
I used a chunky leather working thread and it was bulky enough they showed through the leather cover.

Tip… use the release paper from vinyl to tuck between things while spreadable the glue. Makes it easier to keep clean 😊

Elmer's glue (or any pva glue) will totally work for gluing the cover together.
It is what i used for my attempts at book binding. I used goat leather and bass wood, and it had no problem holding the wood, leather, and paper together.
I glued the end pages to the text block first (instead of the covers) and then attached the cover to it all at once.
Book binding is a lot of fun 😊
I am a big fan of Coptic Stitch books but I don't do any glue so my books look very different to these

There used to be/might still be a pretty decent cutting board that was wood with silicone corners, it used to be a thing of grabbing two of those along with bolts and wing nuts to make a $10 book press...might need some washers as well.
The silicone corners just get popped off and there's a notch there for those that you can feed the bolts through
So what I do is I glue my board directly to each side of the block and then cover the whole thing with leather. Also, to emboss the front, I draw what I want on the board with pencil then I take string and glue and go over my pencil lines with the string. Then, when you lay your leather down on top of it, it causes an indent where the string is. I’m no expert but I do enjoy it. Oh! One more thing. I don’t cut the corners before wrapping. I wrap and fold the corners then do a paper cut. That insures that your corners meat up perfectly. I hope that helps

Thoughts on the cover assembly:
A thin cordage or leather lacing between the spine and the sides will take up spacing and be flexible for opening. Second, you have the flex tape (the cheese cloth like ) material from gluing text blocks together, try using another set to cover between the hard board spine and each side.

Amazing work! Also if you want your pages to look kinda rustic/old looking, if you get some coffee and mix it in some hot water, pour that into a pan you can soak or dip your pages in there to give it a cool rusitc look

Draw a diagonal line after marking the text block sewing holes. This helps you realise you have the signatures flipped before you sew it.

You can also make your own bookbinding glue with basic ingredients then store it for a few months, you just warm it up a little when you need to use it.

My only thought on the spine would be to measure the thickness of the block and add the thickness of your cover material for the spine width. That should give the spine solid width but enough extra space to be flexible while remaining tight when open. I'll give it a try and report back my findings.

I love bookbinding just as something to chill with 😂 I am super proud though cause I channeled my inner Cl3ver today and just did my first ever soldering job and I now have a 100% working Xbox controller for 10 bucks (cost of the solder iron and solder) 😄 I think I leveled up
My favourite way to be lazy about bookbinding it the time I stitched up four signatures of watercolour paper and then simply glued the front and back pages to a thick bit of leather to form a cover. It hides the stitching and is slightly larger than the text block, so it kinda protects it. This of course only works with sufficiently thick paper like that, though... unless you stitch on endpapers...
I recommend NOT folding the signatures individually and then combining. The reason why is your signatures will develop a fine point vs a round back and that'll lead to more tearing when you're trying to see it together. Been doing this for a couple years and I learned that in my readings.
You can decorate the leather and mybe gold leaf some of them, Add some with the skill tree logo and some with the larp logo you can even combine them ie Skill Tree @ Reconing

You dont need any bookbinding glue.. you can make it yourself with water and starch or wheat flour.. it's called paste and that's what they traditionally use for making and restaurating books. It even works dramatically well with leather. And it's even reversible with water in case you make a mistake. Also, please don't glue the spine to the textblock. That was hard to watch to be honest. Liked it for the punk though. Or maybe I should relax and get more of that punk into my bookbinding process.
