    Honestly it's easy to see why so many people like Green and why Green's being pushed so much by looking at this list; none of the individual cards or even the play patterns are groanworthy by themselves. However, I do see people complain a lot about how Green decks tend to get out of control too easily and just overwhelm you. So there's kind of a weird discrepancy there that I'd be interested in seeing explored.

    Grand abolisher effects feel a lot more fair when it's in a combat deck. Especially ones without access to hoofy boi. Tangentially related; I use Tidal Barracuda in a no-combo combat-win-only Donal deck. The extra benefit to my opponents can really incentivize them to leave it on the field, while still helping me get my Donal triggers each turn.

    To me having a creature countered is usually more frustrating than having it removed because I feel that oftentimes that counter could be used to stop some more dangerous noncreature threat that the spot removal cannot handle so it feels like it's wasted on the creature and it might allow someone else to just run away with the game (unless it's monoblue and they use counterspells for any and all threats in which case fair enough). Also obviously you get ETBs if something is removed after entering rather than countered. That said counterspells are more often than not the thing that saves a game from going to hell when someone threatens to get massively ahead too early or win anticlimatically, so I appreciate their presence in the ecosystem obviously.

    • @coryledwitch6492
      @coryledwitch6492 2 года назад +2

      Right, so, it sound like you have more of a problem with players lack of proper threat assessment than counter spells in general. But quite frankly, part of casting counterspells is that you are only working with limited info considering you probably only know a few cards in each players deck from play and/or pre-game discussion. So, saying that a player countered the wrong thing is just super subjective . Counters have been a part of magic since its inception and are a vital part of the game! They should definitely be close to the top of this list for commander, at least, considering it’s a singleton format! People who complain about counterspells in commander must have not played against many blue tempo/control decks in modern, legacy, standard, Arena, etc. because they are supremely more ruthless when you can have 4 of each!!

    I think the reason counterspells feel so bad is because it feels like they left their mana open just to stop you from casting your grave titan out of spite instead of advancing their own board. Removal spells are less personal because maybe the 2/2 zombie won't attack you and you can keep your Shock in your hand until you need it.

  • @mella4376
    @mella4376 2 года назад +17

    I do disagree to some extent on grand abolisher&co: combat-based decks, which I find to be a healthy and fun part of the ecosystem, feel to me already underrepresented when it comes to mid/high power. In white-based decks grand abolisher and ranger captain are important pieces to aggressive strategies, as they allow you to go in with a degree of consistency you can't find elsewhere: if they stick you are then safe to go bash some faces. Sure they are obviously also widely used to protect combos, but I've seen them played simply to bolster go-wide/tribal decks almost as often.
    Even if you don't buy any of that and you think I just live in a very warped meta (might be), I think the point about them removing interesting choices is imprecise: it might be true with grand abolisher for the most part, but I think ranger captain is actually super fun as the little game of chicken that almost always occurs when it comes to getting someone to pop the captain at a specific time generates some of the tensest and most fun moments in many games.

    I feel like the main problem with counterspells is there's little to no way to protect your cards from them, it all depends on if your opponent has them or not. You can put hexproof and indestructible on a permanent on the board, you can use protection spells, or try bouncing it, but the only way to stop a counterspell is with a counterspell or a few specific cards and effects that don't work in most situations. It requires the blue player to have good timing, but realistically if they have a counter there's nothing you can do but accept it

  • @j.e.v.b394
    @j.e.v.b394 2 года назад +28

    The reason i personally dislike counter spell is because unless you are playing blue, there is no way to deal with it. If someone cast a removal there is always the chance you have some way of dealing with it. If you arent playing blue, the blue player is allowed to counter everything and the other people just have to watch. It definitely depends on level tho. If an infinite combo gets countered fair, since that is prob the only way of dealing with it. But i guess since me and my friends play a lower level it mostly comes down to, I decide what you play.

    The thing about Counterspells is that when a person uses it, they are usually ahead. They could save mana during their main phase to protect their position instead of improving there position. A counterspell stops someone from getting board presence.
    A spot removal on the other hand is more commonly used to catch up to someone (of course not always, but when you're ahead you probably don't use removal unless something is threatening to surpass you position). A spot removal takes something from someone who already has something.
    In real life, you would you think is the bigger asshole? A person stealing a car from someone who's been driving it for a while or a person stealing someones first car right outside the car dealership.

    My friend has a mono-white Zetalpa deck that's essentially built around board wiping and attacking people with Zetalpa, lol. Everyone pretty much groans when he pulls that deck out, but I think it's still a good challenge and makes for a fun game.
    Also, on Gray Merchant and Dockside Extortionist, I think that if WOTC had made their ETBs trigger only "if you cast it from your hand" or maybe trigger when they die, but then they exile themselves, then they would have been more fair and balanced, and thus more fun to play against, at least in my opinion

    Eating a counter spell compared to a swords to plowshares is noooot the same thing. That counter spell could have stopped damn near anything but will 97% of the time be used on impulse to stop something that wouldn’t have ended anybody while likely effectively taking the target player out of the game and allowing another player who was obviously further ahead to run away with everything.

    • @CameronSMoore
      @CameronSMoore 2 года назад

      Depends on your strategy. If you are piloting a graveyard deck, then a board wipe can actually gain you value while destroying your opponents. This extra value means that your (personal) game gets advanced, so that the game isn’t stalled from your perspective. Spell slinger decks lose maybe half a turn, but they don’t get set back in terms of gameplan, so boardwipes are decent removal. However, in a big-creatures-go-smash deck, a board wipe is just stalling.

    17:03 I feel like I can explain why Counterspells feel so bad to play with / against. It's because your 1 Island that you left untapped after doing everything you wanted on your turn shouldn't be able to basically cancel out my 5, 8, 12 - mana spell. It just doesn't seem fair.
    And in a way, it's actually anti-interaction, because if and when you counter something, you don't even give it a chance to exist and be a threat on the board. It's straight off the the graveyard, potentially never to be seen again for the rest of the game.

    Perhaps it's just me, but when it comes to counter spells vs spot removal, I feel like at least with removal it felt as if I got to play my card and also once its resolved, perhaps I have instant speed ways to protect it. If I'm not in blue chances are I am unlikely able to do anything about a counter spell.

That's how many. I took up commander, because there are homes for the cards that I enjoyed from the beginning to the end. Instead of asking for bans, just talk it out with your group. One thing we have to realize about counter spells is this: the best ones hit every card type that can be cast. You can not compare Counterspell to Swords to Plowshares because Swords hits literally only creatures.
    Another good point is that destroy/exile spells are more often than not used when something has proven to be a threat. Counter spells are a pre-emptive strike to the most game changing spells, which is like pulling the rug out from under someone's feet.
    Counter spells can be viewed as over-powered due to the side net they cast, and in my opinion I agree. Discard spells are almost always sorceries because they take counter spells one step further, not even letting someone cast the best spells.

    In the matter of tutors, I really think that the context of your deck and its power level is important. I mainly play powerful tutors in my lesser powered decks and in most of my games with them, I didn't use them to get something to put me ahead but instead to respond to threats (and I do love Scheming Symmetry in that aspect, banding with a few other players to eliminate the threat).
    I do think that in the most supported strategies, they are just too good, but when you play a lesser powered tribe or a kind of janky under-supported strategy, it might just bring your deck from unplayable to an ok powerlevel, given you don't abuse them.
    When I play with tutors, I mainly have 1 or 2 (outside of lands) and the most powerful ones only in my weakest decks. I find it more healthy and interesting that way, but I do tend to play games with not that much power anyway.

    5. Have the card stolen from your hand/library and played by your opponent (Tibalt, Tegrid, etc.)

    But for real, couldn't agree more on your list! I especially hate "I Win the Game" cards like expropriate and Tooth and Nail and stuff. And a big reason is because it feels like those cards take advantage of people committing to casual, longer games. You can do nothing all game and just win because you made land drops, and you can really only do that when other players aren't speeding towards winning or combos early, i.e. committed to longer, grindy games that are part of casual commander.

I feel alot of players don't run enough counter meta cards, if it's boardwipe heavy, punish your oppoents by playing a heroic intervention or boros charm. Greedy Mana bases run a ruination. Get value from your opponents deck imbalances.
