Deus Ex was an absolute revelation. It came out around the same time we had a glut of 3D shooters like Quake 2, Sin, Kingpin, Half-Life, etc, but yet it stood out as if it was a completely different genre. I still own a copy!
Funny how they say "criminally underrated tenchu: stealth assassins" and then processed to pass up on the game on this list. It's criminal; the game is god tier and the music is one of, if not, the best soundtracks in gaming.
Loved Thief back in the day. I had the PC demo before I had the actual game and would play it constantly. Also liked to do stealth builds in the Elder Scrolls games.
I don’t love stealth games, but mgs totally changed my perspective on what games could be. The sneaking, the boss fights. Had replay-ability trying to go for that boss rank
It was good to see Metal Gear Solid in a prominent spot, but I'm surprised Tenchu didn't make the list...it's one of the first games that comes to mind when I think of stealth, but I guess maybe they didn't invent any of the mechanics they used.
& here are 10 more: Alien: Covenant Assassin's Creed Batman: Arkham City Haunting Ground Manhunt Shinobido: Way of the Ninja Sly 2: Band of Thieves Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay The Mark of Kri
I was thinking "The earliest I've ever played was Castle Wolfenstein, years after it came out" (was looking for Wolfenstein 3D and downloaded the original by accident.) Glad that made it on the list because it deserves it. I think Tenchu deserves some love as well. It's janky by today's standards but I loved the cheesy dialogue and the fact that you really had to think like a ninja. While you might be able to take out a guard, having 2 or 3 of them gang up on you definitely put you at a disadvantage. Being graded and given items to buy definitely kept me replaying older levels and even the tutorial level and seeing if I could do it without being detected.
Maybe graphics in Thiefs are dated, but sounds is still amazing even today. IIRC it was made by same folks responsible for Ultima Underworld, which inspired Carmack to make his own engine and FROM Software to make King's Field and much later - Souls games. Never played Deus Ex on PS2, it certainly looks... interesting, to say the least.
if you want higher quality graphics without altering the original art which still looks fantastic with the following pack that i will say to use, try the thief 1/gold esrgan pack that can be installed after installing tfix by extracting the usermods into the installation folder and tada, you have hd looking textures like a ps3 remastered port but with more vanilla hd look ever it is available from moddb too
When I was younger, I replayed and restarted one specific hallway section of one of the James Bond games on Xbox 360, so many times that eventually the game would not even load when put into the console.
Ctrl Alt Ego is a fun immersive sim participating in the Steam Stealth Fest! You're a disembodied 'ego' that can take over and control enemies and various other things. Lots of unique mechanics. Just want to give the game a bit more visibility.
I would dearly love another Thief game. It's been left behind in this world of remakes and reboots. But I genuinely think, if done right, it would single handedly re-ignite the stealth genre in general.
Surprised Alien Isolation didn't make the list. In terms of pure gameplay and AI, it might be the best game I have ever played. Getting mauled by the alien? No use trying again and banking on it being at the same spot as last time!
I really like games with stealth mechanics, because it requires strategy and thinking hard to be able to complete missions easily. But it's a shame that stealth genre games are now rare, and have even started to disappear. Sad! 😢
Dishonored was my first taste of a Bethesda game. It was so good I had to get all the Bethesda games for the PS3. Dishonored stealth was excellent, while Rogue Warrior's was ... different.
One very big miss in this otherwise great list: Not putting on a single one of the Strategy Stealth games, like the Commandos series, Desperados or even newer games like Shadow Tactics. It may play very differently than the "regular" stealth games like Thief or Hitman but the squad-based strategic planning that requires your team to stay out of sight, lest it be swarmed and overwhelmed by huge enemy squadrons, is at the very least more stealth-based than Among Us for sure.

Hmm, I'll have to add this one to my list.

Whats crazy is it came out before Metal Gear did by a number of months, and they still left it off the list.
How is Tenchu not on here but Dishonored and Mark of the Ninja are?
While the original is one of the greatest video games of all-time, its sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War, is incredibly underrated.
& here are 10 more:
Alien: Covenant
Assassin's Creed
Batman: Arkham City
Haunting Ground
Manhunt
Shinobido: Way of the Ninja
Sly 2: Band of Thieves
Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
The Mark of Kri
Butcher Bay is such an underrated game. Way ahead of its time, and arguably the best "movie video games." I loved playing it as a kid.
Game*
Tenchu was my primer to the stealth gaming genre.

Glad you have a Splinter Cell game in here. I had the first 3 on PC

All fantastic games 🤙🏻 and the commentator 👀👀
I played deus ex on my ps2 to the point I can't get past the first mission without the game freezing
When I was younger, I replayed and restarted one specific hallway section of one of the James Bond games on Xbox 360, so many times that eventually the game would not even load when put into the console.
Trying to play Deus Ex on a PS2 was your first mistake.

Where is Tenchu?

No Tenchu. LOL. Full pro👍🏻
Dishonored was my first taste of a Bethesda game. It was so good I had to get all the Bethesda games for the PS3. Dishonored stealth was excellent, while Rogue Warrior's was ... different.
Whats the name of the music background during the list?
Putting Dishonored above Deus Ex is just heresy
And using the PS2 cover art for DX to boot…my soul hurts.
It's a list, not a ranked list, it doesn't matter which game goes where.
My first cover shooter was Space Invaders :) 1985 i guess!
How is there only one comment?? Great vid TPJ!!!
what about the original metal gear on the MSX?
Was this top 10 list inspired by Steam's upcoming Steam Stealth Fest which starts July 24th
Love❤❤
Has Ashton even experienced tenchu?
What game is shown at 0:05?
Spider-Man ps4, it was a stealth section where you play as Mary Jane.
Styx:Master of Shadows

What if you shoplift a copy of the Shoplifting Boys from the shop?
Styx:Shards of Darkness
Midnite Bite
Stick with the prod
The GEP gun takedown is always the most silent way to eliminate Manderley
It's getting an up
Kill.switch? Also no idea who that Tom Clarncy is.
You missed Assassins Creed
Metal Gear Franchise
lol where's MGSV????
X2: Wolverine's Revenge. Nah, just kidding, that game sucks! XD
