I just made one of these Travel Trash Cans this morning, out of materials I already had in my office/sewing room. Thanks for the great idea, and very clear tutorial. I did make my strap longer, so it can get around the headrest in my vehicle. Also, after everything was complete, per your tutorial, I decided to do coverstitch around the opening of the bag, from the outside, in order to hold the inside material down, and to create the look I wanted. I am so glad I found Sew Yeah, Nice ideas and quality video/audio!
We are so glad you were able to use the tutorial and make the Travel Trash Can! That is wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing and we hope to see you again soon!
I made this great bag in PUL fabric and used a quart sized clean yogurt container that fits nicely inside. I can then pull out the plastic yogurt container to quickly empty trash & then replace down into the bag. Works real well! Also made a shorter version and placed yogurt container inside and use it as a thread catcher next to sewing machine. It’s also easy to empty & replace yogurt cup when full!
Most people don’t read through the comments but I do because I find a lot of valuable information when I do that. Your yogurt container is an excellent idea because I did make a similar bag for my thread catcher but it’s not sturdy enough so I like the fact of putting a container in there. It is a bit difficult to remove the threads from a fabric bag
I'm very happy with this pattern. Thank you! I wanted it slightly bigger, so I slashed the pattern vertically and inserted an extra inch top to bottom. Though it barely looks any bigger than the original, I think it was probably easier to sew the last step because it fit generously over the free arm. I had a remnant of headliner material that was in my sewing room for years waiting for a purpose, and finally got the nerve to try sewing with it. It turned out to be quite easy to sew over, and there was just enough. It was a project waiting to happen. It went together quickly and is a great improvement over the grocery bags we used to use that would blow out when someone opened the car door.
I made a mock up for my best friend and he wanted it bigger, and I should’ve known better because I did the same thing to a pair of pajama pants. I should’ve just cut it down the middle and made it wider that way. Fortunately somebody from the group reminded me that I still had to keep that boxed corner a square I would’ve forgotten to do that. I decided to make ties nobody wants to continually take their headrest off their seat to take the bag in for washing Surprised he didn’t topstitch the lining to the outer
Hey! What a neat idea! There was a comment already posted about using fusible vinyl on the lining piece, which is a great idea. Also, as I am a quilter, I would probably do some minor quilting to the front/stabilizer side. This wouldn't have to be used as a trash bag; I can see it used for gadgets, notions, whatever. Another great one, guys!
Thanks for great tutorial ,I’ve made 2 this afternoon. Still could not print off template but made my own from counting the squares whilst pieces were on your cutting mat and it worked! It is the coolest template I have found for a trash bin. Thanks again .Linda.
I have done that on many occasions when watching Donna Jordan I just count the number of squares on the mat. Have you had the same issue downloading and printing other PDFs or was it just this one?

Great tutorial and patterns thanks! I think I will shrink this to make a smaller version for my sewing station! Been looking for a thread catcher pattern :)

@@SewYeah Teancum huh, BofM name? Just curious if so, That's neat. I think I might try some of these for the van but line them with oil cloth. Great project.
Great tutorial. Made one for my car. Can't seem to find a way to post a picture. Modified the pattern ever so slightly as I was using some cloth napkins I picked up at a thrift store for the exterior material. Not quite wide enough to cut as a single so I cut two pieces adding a seam allowance to the fold line. They were also not quite long enough to make a single loop for the straps so I cut two and attached velcro. Makes it super easy to remove for cleaning. Our newspapers come in a plastic bag which is just he right size to act as a liner, clipped with some slim clips from the dollar store.
Fun tutorial, and what a super project. I made one of these today to see how long it would take me - about 40 mins from cutting out the pattern to finished product. The next ones will go much quicker. Great job and thank you!

guys, I love your tutorials, and I can figure out your pattern and am already in my mind adjusting it, but you have to guess on the distances (e.g., the top curve line). the width and the length. In addition, when you print the pattern, and I didn't make it to fit the page, the edge for the pattern goes off the paper. (I will be putting a snap clip on the handle and using iron on vinyl on the inside to make it somewhat resistant to wet and sticky stuff. )
