  • Lecture originally given by Nick Duggan on 28 June 2023 at Kelham Island Museum. It provides an overview of the development of the pen and pocket knife industry in Sheffield, and provides an insight to the trade's rural roots as well as the large scale manufacturing. From such a firm foundation with a world wide reputation, the industry saw a marked decline but was that fashion, price or resistance to change?
Reference is made to the continuing skills in the city albeit reduced to a few practitioners. The lecture forms the backdrop to a new exhibition in the Hawley Gallery as part of its Heritage Lottery funded project celebrating the 200th anniversary of the famous multi-bladed Rodgers' Year Knife.

Excellent work! As a modest collector of Sheffield pocket cutlery, with a related RUclips channel, I find this information both useful and entertaining. Keep up the good work!
