    It’s crazy how much comfort I got from listening to the weather radio. Brings back memories of my Poppa, who’s recently passed away. He always carried an old timer, then a Winchester after he broke the old timer.

    Well done. It's sometimes sad to see how the good old things are neglected or even thrown away - and it's so gratifying to rescue them and bring them back to life. My oldest knife is from around 1890 and was used as a sidepocket knife in a Bavarian Lederhose.
    Only yesterday I rescued old brass handles (around 1900) from doors somebody threw out during a renovation. The doors themselves were done and I have a couple of beautiful wooden ones at home for my own renovation project.

    Beautiful old case knife Kevin. Cleaned up nice! Books like that give you a reference to go by, but the reality is in the market of Case knife collecting,the Real serious collectors are very experienced and only lay down top cash for Mint examples. They can tell if the blade has even the slightest sharpening done etc. that being said.-There are knife guys like myself that don’t particularly seek out the Mint stuff. I prefer old valuable folders that are in the 80% -95% condition. To me they have that mojo! Your Awesome old Barlow’ there is what I prefer in a Classic pocket knife. When they’re Mint you don’t carry them and you gotta fuss to keep them polished. I don’t blame you for saying hey!!! I wouldn’t take less than $400. That old workhorse Barlow you saved from the Box means more because of its circumstance and love you put into it! You go to a knife show and lay down $475 for a Mint one in some guys glass - will not mean the same to your Heart and Soul. Enjoy that beautiful old Barlow. I scored on a beautiful old Case tested green bone Jack 2 months ago for $14 . Not mint - probably 90% and that’s the way I like em! God Bless

    You can chemicly remove a lot of rust on old knives with vinegar this way you don't have to use scrapers and abrasives so much and take a chance of damaging them. I have cleaned up a number of old knives with vinegar and a plastic cleaning brush. Sometimes I use a metal polish with a sonic toothbrush too. Weenol and an old Sonicare tooth brush works great.

      I recently got some of those little plastic wheels that chuck up in a Dremel tool... They're kind of pinwheel looking deals that come in several color coordinated grits. Good for cleaning up blades and such without being as harsh as a wire wheel. They seem to work really good so far. Those things and a little Flitz is a good way to go without doing too much.

    The best knife purchase I made recently was getting two Case Classics for $75 each. I didn't realize that they were Case Classic, and the prices kept on dropping. One day I realized that they were Case Classics. I they were just on the site a Case knife. For those who don't know Queen Cutlery made most of the Case Classic that Parker contracted when he owned Case. When Bill Howard worked at Queen, he was in charge of the Case Classics and Winchesters. If you can't afford a GEC, get a Case Classic or a Winchester.
    The only problem with the two Classics I bought is that Queen was still using celluloid or some such material for scales. There is significant shrinkage, but I don't want to replace the scales because Bill Howard may have applied them.

    Cool knife. Was there a specific task that sheeps foot blades were good for compared to others?

      @theknifedoctor  9 месяцев назад +1

      Great Question!! The sheepsfoot blade is commonly seen in sailing knives because it does make it hard to stab yourself while working with rope and such on board an unstable surface. It's also seen in rescue knives because you can slip it under seatbelts, clothing, etc without too much worry of cutting the person being restrained by same. With a lot of steel behind the tip of the knife, I imagine they are relatively strong, although you don't get a really pointy point.

    That knife was made during the war when we had a brass and copper shortage realistically in the condition of the knife if you got a $200 offer that's fair, remember that the top $is for new never sharpen. But you did very well. 😊

      It was made before the war. 1920-1940. It’s pre 1940.

    I've always felt grinder wheels where to abrasive sometimes and can ruin the surface of certain metals. So i just use fine steel wool to polish up older knives or i will just let em set in some evaporust that stuff works wonders and it cleans em up real good but. My favorite wadding polish to use is Eagle One "Nevr-dull" it comes with a cleaning/ polish agent soaked into it and really shines up whatever ur cleaning. Its great on a bunch of metals brass, chrome, steel and more.

      It’s not a stone I’m using. It’s a fiber wheel. Like an SOS pad.

      @@theknifedoctor yea i don't use wire wheels neither nothing that tends to use power really just some elbow grease and no sand paper neither unless its like 800 grit but. Not telling u what to do just what i do with my knives.

    What book is that you’re using for the price guide?

      Search for Author Houston Price. Collecting Knives. They made 15 editions. 15th is the best one and it’s the last one made. It was published in 2008.

    I have some old knives that need some repairs done to them and I was wondering if you could do the repairs and what it would cost?

    • @theknifedoctor
      @theknifedoctor  9 месяцев назад

      I don’t repair knives for people. I’m sorry. Repairs don’t always go as planned and I don’t want to permanently damage someone’s sentimental knife. I’m hoping you could learn from me and repair them yourself. I hope you understand.

    A sonic bath might help get the dirt and debris out from around the rivets and other crevices.

      I wondered if an ultrasonic might get that crud inside, too.
      I've used a Popsicle stick wrapped in #1000 Wet or Dry paper with decent results...
