Summative assessment is a type of assessment that measures student learning at the end of an instructional unit. These assessments are often high stakes, such as final exams, standardized tests, or end-of-unit projects, and are used to determine whether the educational goals of the course have been met. Summative assessment is juxtaposed to formative assessment. Formative assessment is conducted during the learning process and is aimed at monitoring student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. In contrast, summative assessment occurs at the end of a learning period and is primarily used to evaluate a final grade.
