    What do you think of the Happy Gilmore Serve? 👇

    I’d be interested in seeing you discuss return of serve when faced with challenging serves. Deep, high topspin, and coming into the body for example. Basically some tips for returning tough serves.

    I like the 50% and 25% slow-mo breakdowns! 👍🏻👍🏻

    Great Vid been doing a verse of these type served by stepping back with non dominant leg and then one stepping into fluid top spin serve which the players at my local court seem take back by my movement and speed !

      Noice! Pretty fun serve. I’d never thought about it until I saw Mary do it. But it actually ads some crazy mph on your serve!

    It works. I have been crushing the last couple of days. All my opponents can do is block it back with no real control.

    I'll be honest.... it's my that Mary Brascia invented the Happy Gilmore serve; it's that she's the first one to popularize it, akin to Zane Navratil popularizing the Chainsaw & One-Handed Spin Serves despite Morgan Evans having already been doing it for years.
    I know I do this, many friends in Utah & Jersey do this😅 we just aren't Pros (me, yet at least) to give it that traction. So hey, more power to the serve. Lets goooo! 🙌🙌🙌

      @mtcdnp 21 день назад +1

      same here, been using it for over 1 year (I came up with it since I was trying to get more power and using the body inertia motion made sense)

    • @pickleballplaybook

      I think to figure out who actually “invented” the serve you’d have no way of knowing. As soon as a pro does something before any other pro, that’s the person that invented it. I don’t think Zane invented the spin serve, nor did Morgan Evans. Some random person must have done it before Morgan, but it was Morgan that put it in front of the eyes of everyone first. So hopefully you get what I’m saying when I say Mary “invented” it. 👌

    Works good for backhand side-spin drop serves too! Like many others here, been doing it for a couple of years 😅 (basically, my whole pickleball "career" lol.) Good explanation Austin, I too would love to see a video on difficult serve returns.

  • @michelleweidenbenner6509
    @michelleweidenbenner6509 14 дней назад

    I’ve been trying this with some success. I really enjoyed the video. It was thorough and specific. I watched it several times.
    The only problem is that forward momentum of executing this serve carries us into the court and if their return is deep we have to back pedal. Maybe I have to add a split step back?

    • @pickleballplaybook
      @pickleballplaybook  13 дней назад +1

      Start back further to where you finish behind the baseline! Thats what Mary does on hers and I really didn’t cover it in the video. Does that make sense?

    • @michelleweidenbenner6509
      @michelleweidenbenner6509 13 дней назад

      Yes that makes sense. Unfortunately some of the courts I play on don’t have the space to start too far back. I’m going to try to shuffle with smaller steps.
      Thanks again!

    Be very curious to see rpm/speed numbers to bear out the improvement. Also, now I want to see someone do a discus throw serve....

    • @pickleballplaybook
      @pickleballplaybook  18 дней назад

      I’ll have to set that up on the next one! It’s about 5.5mph faster because of the forward momentum

  • @johnsanchez2589
    @johnsanchez2589 20 дней назад +1

    It looks like when you release the ball it’s going slightly forward, making it technically illegal. You would have to figure out how to drop the ball straight down without imparting forward motion.

      I've been using this serve since 5 years ago when I was a 3.0. I'm a 4.365 and still do it. I only play 3x a week. Feel free to wait for more pros to do it but I recommend try it now.

    • @kento1957
      @kento1957 20 дней назад

      @@MRmrROro1 The only thing that can improve on getting more speed on serves is more topspin. I don't see how shuffling forward can accomplish that.

      Noice! I think you’ll see it take over the tour. But we will have to wait and see 🎊

  • @ender133
    @ender133 21 день назад +1

    Actually now that I think about the discus throw....wonder how this serve interacts with the ppa rule "The ball must leave the hand in a downward motion". Since the server is moving forward the ball is moving down AND forward at the time of release. If you managed to do a discus throw serve ball would have quite a bit of forward momentum before even getting hit.

    • @MRmrROro1
      @MRmrROro1 20 дней назад

      Couldn't we "assume" this serve doesn't "interact " negatively in a PPA rule since it wasn't corrected by any PPA officials in the recent PPA tournament?

    • @ender133
      @ender133 20 дней назад

      @MRmrROro1 probably...just legitimately raising it as a question before investing a bunch of time into it like the spin serve and then having it banned.

    • @kmgdc
      @kmgdc 20 дней назад

      You can also assume that any drop is “downward”. Different angles downward are still “downward”.

    I’m not convinced happy Gilmore creates the most speed if you can use proper rotation from the ground up. Also she probably sacrificed control with placement of serve.
